Revealing a vital portrait of Elizabethan London and the interaction of social classes within the city, its social commentary is on the whole optimistic, though darker tones are discernible. The play has had a lively history of performance on both the professional and amateur stage.

An aristocrat, Rowland Lacy, is in love with a girl, Rose Oatley. Rose’s father and Lacy’s uncle disapprove of the marriage because of the class difference and Lacy’s extravagant spending style. In order to make good, Lacy is told to join the army and fight in France. He does not want to go and convinces someone to go in his place whilst he disguises himself as a Dutch shoemaker, Hans. He becomes the apprentice of Simon Eyre, whilst an actual shoemaker goes to war. In the meantime, a gentleman called Hammon attempts to seduce the true shoemaker’s wife, Jane and in order to persuade her, he presents her with a document stating the shoemaker, Ralph, is dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Dekker's singular comic drama, The Shoemakers' Holiday moves through the urban landscape of 16th century apprenticeships and artisan production in this tale of thwarted marriages and class division. Simon Eyre and his rags to riches journey to becoming the city's Lord Mayor embroils a host of lively characters who find themselves in the generative setting of the shoemakers' workshop. Whether it be Roland Lacy, who abandons his military duties under the guise of a Dutch shoemaker to stay close to Rose Oatley, his love interest, or Ralph Damport, a journeyman shoemaker, who cannot escape conscription and finds himself separated from his wife Jane with the appearance of an elusive shoe providing the only chance of reunion. Dekker's comedy focuses on the early modern tensions between urban artisans, wealthy merchants and the landed aristocracy. Through these relationships he explores gender, immigration and disability, mixing acute social commentary within the promise of festive escape and transformation. This edition offers readers a clear, accessible, fully annotated text, with a comprehensive introduction that covers research on class, comedy, the figure of the stranger and representations of disability. It also explores the ways in which the play's intertwining preoccupations with love, labour and war are shaped by the city in which it was written, providing insight into urban life at the end of the Tudor era.

Book excerpt: Rose Otley, daughter of the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Roger Otley, and Rowland Lacey, nephew to Sir Hugh Lacy, the earl of Lincoln, are deeply in love. With evident irony, proud Sir Roger declares to Sir Hugh that he cannot presume to have his daughter marry above her station. With equal pride, Sir Hugh ironically counters that because of Rowland's dissolute ways it would be far better for Rose to marry a substantial young London businessman. Rowland, who toured Europe and learned the shoemaker's trade in Germany, is given a command in the army of King Henry V, who is preparing to invade France. Sir Hugh wants Rowland off to France as soon as possible, so that the youth might forget Rose. Rowland has other ideas. Claiming pressing business in London, he turns his command over to his cousin, Askew, after promising that he will join his unit in Normandy, if not in Dover. When the troops assemble to leave London, Simon Eyre, a shoemaker, pleads to no avail with Rowland to allow Rafe Damport, his drafted journeyman, to stay home with his new bride, Jane. Rafe, resigned to going to the wars, gives Jane as a farewell gift, a pair of shoes that he made for her.

It exemplifies his intermingling of everyday subjects with the fantastical, embodied in this case by the rise of a craftsman to Mayor and the involvement of an unnamed but idealised king in the concluding banquet.--www.wikipedia.org.

Book The Shoemaker and the Tea Party

Download or read book The Shoemaker and the Tea Party written by Alfred F. Young and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2001-01-17 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Robert Twelves Hewes, a Boston shoemaker who participated in such key events of the American Revolution as the Boston Massacre and the Tea Party, might have been lost to history if not for his longevity and the historical mood of the 1830's. When the Tea Party became a leading symbol of the Revolutionary ear fifty years after the actual event, this 'common man' in his nineties was 'discovered' and celebrated in Boston as a national hero. Young pieces together this extraordinary tale, adding new insights about the role that individual and collective memory play in shaping our understanding of history.
