Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments on the initiation of detonation in cast and pressed explosives, subjected to plane shocks introduced at a plane surface, are discussed. Shock amplitudes ranging from 28 to 140 kilobars in the explosive were generated by using plane wave lenses with various combinations of donor explosive and barrier composition and geometry. The shock velocity was obtained in each sample as a function of distance of travel into the wedge-shaped specimen from distance time records obtained with a smear camera. The resulting curves for cast explosives are found to be quite different from those for pressed explosives. Cast TNT exhibited a result anomalous to the other cast charges. The observations are interpreted as showing evidence that hot-spots must be present behind the shock to explain the rapidity with which the detonation is established. Sources of hot-spot formation are suggested. The results obtained at the lower shock amplitudes when compared to results on the gap test lend support to the idea that peak pressure and pressure history in the shocked elements of explosive are far more important than wave shape in determining the time for transition to detonation.

Spatial and temporal speci?cations were reduced from centimeters and milliseconds to micrometers and nanoseconds. New theory and computational tools were required along with a raft of new experimental techniques and novel ways of interpreting the results. Over the next 40 years, the emphasis was on higher energy in smaller packages, more precise initiation schemes, better and safer formulations, and greater accuracy in forecasting performance. Researchers from many institutions began working in the emerging and expanding ?eld. In the midst of all of the work and progress in precision initiation and scienti?c study, in the early 1960s, papers began to appear detailing the ?rst quantitative studies of the transition from de?agration to detonation (DDT), ?rst in cast, then in pressed explosives, and ?nally in propellants.

Book excerpt: It is known that the Chapman-Jouguet theory of detonation is based on the assumption of an instantaneous and complete transformation of explosives into detonation products in the wave front. Therefore, one should not expect from the theory any interpretations of the detonation limits, such as shock initiation of det onation and kinetic instability and propagation (failure diameter). The Zeldovich-Von Neuman-Doring (ZND) theory of detonation appeared, in fact, as a response to the need for a theory capable of interpreting such limits, and the ZND detonation theory gave qualitative interpretations to the detonation limits. These interpretations were based essentially on the theoretical notion that the mechanism of explosives transformation at detonation is a combustion of a layer of finite thickness of shock-compressed explosive behind the wave shock front with the velocity of the front. However, some experimental findings turned out to be inconsistent with the the ory. A very small change of homogeneous (liquid) explosives detonation velocity with explosive charge diameter near the rather sizable failure diameter is one of the findings. The elucidation of the nature of this finding has led to the discovery of a new phenomenon. This phenomenon has come to be known as the breakdown (BD) of the explosive self-ignition behind the front of shock waves under the effect of rarefaction waves.

Particular attention is paid to the analysis of shock development from compression waves forming ahead of confined burning in the original material. It is summarized that if the shock is sufficiently strong, it will lead to shock to detonation transition (SDT). During the development of the shock wave, the porous material may collapse into a solid plug of void free propellant because the speed at which the wave propagates increases as the material is compressed. The modeling effort presented indicates how two-phase unsteady combustion processes in granular material can couple to the solid mechanics of shock formation and eventually to a steady-state detonation. How ever, it is not intended to be an exhaustive account of those advances; it is assumed that the reader can, if desired, consult the standard monographs, and more recent, more specialized works (notably W.C. Davis and W. Fickett, and C.L. Mader). The history of the discipline is interesting in itself, and also as an illustra tion of the causes which lead to progress in a coherent body of scientific work. I should like to make some comments on this progress, of which there is a fascinating summary in the introduction, and which will figure largely throughout the work.

Book excerpt: Theoretical calculations describing the initiation in heterogeneous TNT, RDX, Tetryl, Comp B, Pentolite, and 75/25 Cyclotol, produced by shocks up to 37 kilobars, are given. The hot spot initiation mechanism is simulated by using appropriate equations of state of the explosives and the resultant growth from shock to detonation wave is shown to be in qualitative agreement with experimental results. The shock wave in the explosive travels with increasing velocity due to the release of energy during chemical reaction in the neighborhood of the shock front, and then takes on a constant value upon reaching full detonation velocity. Numerical experiments show that the qualitative ordering of the sensitivity of the 6 explosives, based on one- dimensional gap test calculations, is the same as that obtained from U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory experimental gap tests.

At these scales, shock waves interact with local material properties and microstructure to produce a hierarchy of dissipative structures such as inelastic deformation fields, randomly distributed lattice defects, and residual stresses. A macroscopically steady planar shock wave is neither plane nor steady at the mesoscale.
