Download or read book The Dalai Lama s Cat written by David Michie and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "‘Oh! How adorable! I didn’t know you had a cat!’ she exclaimed. I am always surprised how many people make this observation. Why should His Holiness not have a cat?‘ If only she could speak,’ continued the actress. ‘I’m sure she’d have such wisdom to share. ’And so the seed was planted . . .I began to think that perhaps the time had come for me to write a book of my own—a book that would convey some of the wisdom I’ve learned sitting not at the feet of the Dalai Lama but even closer, on his lap. A book that would tell my own tale . . . how I was rescued from a fate too grisly to contemplate to become the constant companion of a man who is not only one of the world’s greatest spiritual leaders and a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate but also a dab hand with a can opener." Starving and pitiful, a mud-smeared kitten is rescued from the slums of New Delhi and transported to a life she could have never imagined. In a beautiful sanctuary overlooking the snow-capped Himalayas, she begins her new life as the Dalai Lama’s cat. Warmhearted, irreverent, and wise, this cat of many names opens a window to the inner sanctum of life in Dharamsala. A tiny spy observing the constant flow of private meetings between His Holiness and everyone from Hollywood celebrities to philanthropists to self-help authors, the Dalai Lama’s cat provides us with insights on how to find happiness and meaning in a busy, materialistic world. Her story will put a smile on the face of anyone who has been blessed by the kneading paws and bountiful purring of a cat.

Download or read book A Healthy State of Panic written by Farnoosh Torabi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular finance podcast So Money, this accessible and clever guide to leaning into your fear to maximize your financial success and beyond “is a game-changer” (Kelly Ripa), perfect for fans of Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies and You Are a Badass at Making Money. Farnoosh Torabi is familiar with fear. Growing up in the 1980s as the daughter of Iranian immigrants, she was warned to always play it safe. She spent her childhood immersed in fear—of rejection, loneliness, missed opportunities, and falling short of her potential. Of course, now her mother says, “It all worked out, didn’t it?” Funnily enough, it did. Farnoosh came to the realization that fear never limited her. Instead, it has become a friend, opening her world and equipping her with the tools and street smarts to navigate life’s trials and thrive on her own terms. Now, Farnoosh pairs stories from her immigrant upbringing with hard-won industry knowledge and data to show how leaning into your fears can help you take control of your financial future. With clear-eyed advice and an engaging, heartfelt voice, she lays out the nine most common fears that hold us back—both personally and in our financial decisions—and shows how these fears can be pivoted into strengths and mined for wisdom to help us achieve richer, more meaningful lives: 1. The Fear of Rejection and how it leads to self-discovery and where we are loved. 2. The Fear of Loneliness and how it promotes strength, resilience, and empathy. 3. The Fear of Missing Out and how it begs for self-reflection and promotes individuality and boundaries. 4. The Fear of Being Exposed and how it heightens awareness and draws comedy and connection. 5. The Fear of Uncertainty and how it accelerates our goals and finds order in the disorder. 6. The Fear of Money and how it encourages landing on your (true) money story and pursuing financial freedom. 7. The Fear of Failure and how it helps us to embrace red flags and the next right thing. 8. The Fear of Endings and how it sparks action, deepens an appreciation for what endures and unveils the beauty in regret. 9. The Fear of Losing Your Freedom and how it fuels self-advocacy and inspires a legacy. Discover how you can become more self-reliant and financially resilient, invite calm and control into your daily routine, and how fear can serve you with this “wise, witty, and illustrative guide” (Eve Rodsky, New York Times bestselling author) to building your best life.

Book excerpt: A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THE ADVENTURES OF FIRST-RATE STORYTELLER, GUITARIST, AND RELENTLESS ROAD WARRIOR JESSE DAYTON Jesse Dayton’s story reads like a who’s who of American music. In his debut memoir Beaumonster, Dayton reveals the stranger-than-fiction encounters and outlandish experiences that have ensued across his wide-ranging career. After sneaking into night clubs to play gigs in his youth, eighteen-year-old Dayton and his trio began packing clubs and theaters across Houston, Dallas, and Austin. His first solo record which featured great luminaries like Doug Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, and Johnny Gimble, hit number one on the Americana radio charts and then he was off to the races— touring the world solo and with punk legends Social Distortion and the Supersuckers. While doing press in Nashville, he caught the attention of Waylon Jennings and was whisked off to Woodland Studios, where he was greeted by none other than Johnny Cash, who told Dayton, “We’ve been waiting for you.” Since then, Dayton’s ride across the entertainment industry, traversing genres and formats, has only gotten wilder. Whether it’s playing guitar on records and film with the likes of Cash, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, Glen Campbell and Duff McKagan; writing and recording soundtracks for horror director/rockstar Rob Zombie; directing Malcolm McDowell and Sid Haig in his own horror movie; filling in for the iconic punk band X’s guitarist; joining Ryan Bingham on tour; or the many solo and guest projects he continues to work on, Dayton is down to leave his mark, making Beaumonster a uniquely entertaining tale that will impress new and old fans alike.

Download or read book Irrepressible written by Leslie Brody and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Red Star Sister “An excellent biography. Brody has made the world a better place by telling [Mitford’s] saga so skillfully” (San Francisco Chronicle). Admirers and detractors use the same words to describe Jessica Mitford: subversive, mischief–maker, muckraker. J.K. Rowling calls her her “most influential writer.” Those who knew her best simply called her Decca. Born into one of Britain’s most famous aristocratic families, she eloped with Winston Churchill’s nephew as a teenager. Their marriage severed ties with her privilege, a rupture exacerbated by the life she lead for seventy–eight years. After arriving in the United States in 1939, Decca became one of the New Deal’s most notorious bureaucrats. For her the personal was political, especially as a civil rights activist and journalist. She coined the term frenemies, and as a member of the American Communist Party, she made several, though not among the Cold War witch hunters. When she left the Communist Party in 1958 after fifteen years, she promised to be subversive whenever the opportunity arose. True to her word, late in life she hit her stride as a writer, publishing nine books before her death in 1996. Yoked to every important event for nearly all of the twentieth century, Decca not only was defined by the history she witnessed, but by bearing witness, helped to define that history. “Brisk, engaging.” —Wall Street Journal “A valuable retelling of a provocative life.” —Kirkus Reviews
Download or read book House of Commons Health Committee After Francis Making A Difference HC 657 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Health Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NHS needs to be an organization in which an open dialogue about care quality is part of the natural culture of the organization, not a duty which only arises in cases of service failure. Robert Francis made 290 recommendations in his report, but in truth they boil down to just one - that the culture of 'doing the system's business' is pervasive in parts of the NHS and has to change. Many who raise their concerns in the NHS at present risk serious consequences for their employment and professional status. But disciplinary procedures, professional conduct hearings and employment tribunals are not the proper place for honestly-held concerns about patient safety and care quality to be aired constructively. The NHS standard contract imposes a duty of candour on all NHS providers. This is an essential principle, but it is not adequately understood or applied. It should mean that all providers create a culture which is routinely open both with their patients and their commissioners. The same principle should apply to commissioners so that they are routinely open and accountable to local communities. The Health Committee recommended this approach in 2011 and repeats that now. It should be a prime role of the CQC to encourage the development of this culture within care providers, and of NHS England to develop the same culture within commissioners. The Health Committee will in future work closely with the Professional Standards Authority to develop the accountability process for professional regulators in healthcare

Download or read book Out of the Darkness written by Audrey O'Marra and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is not your average Self-help book on the practices of Yoga. The author uses a balance between yoga theory and her own personal stories. These elements compliment each other and give a powerful example of how the practices and application of Yoga can have a positive impact on an individual. Her story is inspiring in itself, the fact that she got through the adversities and losses and found a path that many would not have, the chapters about the philosophy of yoga make her story relatable. It would seem like a fluke otherwise, but understanding more about the history, the eight limbs, the different practices, it makes her path seem like it was intentional. She did the work, which makes it attainable for others." Sarah Turner
