Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Followers of the early New Age movement known as New Thought, which was wildly popular at the turn of the 20th century, were intensely interested in gleaning the fruit of all of humanity s spiritual wisdom. Here, in this curious volume originally published in 1909, one of the most influential New Thought writers and editors introduces Western readers to Eastern thought on what, exactly, is on the other side of the river of death. From the geography of the astral plane to the soul-slumber that occurs after death, from communication with spirits to what lies beyond reincarnation, this is a fascinating look at the pop spirituality of a century ago.American writer WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (1862 1932) aka Theron Q. Dumont was born in Baltimore and had built up a successful law practice in Pennsylvania before professional burnout led him to the religious New Thought movement. He served as editor of the popular magazine New Thought from 1901 to 1905, and as editor of the journal Advanced Thought from 1916 to 1919. He authored dozens of New Thought books including Arcane Formula or Mental Alchemy and Vril, or Vital Magnetism under numerous pseudonyms, some of which are likely still unknown today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Death Ship, a Strange Story, Vol. 1 of 3: An Account of a Cruise in the Flying Dutchman, Collected, From the Papers of the Late Mr. Geoffrey Fenton, of Poplar, Master Mariner We traded to Riga, Stockholm, and Baltic ports, and Often to Rotterdam, where, having a quick ear, which has sometimes served me for playing upon the fiddle for my mates to dance or sing to, I picked up enough Of Dutch to enable me to hold my own in con versing with a Hollander, or Hans Butter box, as those people used to be called; that is to say, I had sufficient words at command to qualify me to follow what was said and to answer so as to be intelligible; the easier, since, uncouth as that language is, there is so much Of it resembling ours in sound that many words in it might easily pass for por tions of our tongue grossly and ludicrously articulated. Why I mention this will here after appear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. People said, those days, it was better to live in vain than to live in Cooper's Pike City. Said I, when I first set eyes on the town of Cooper's Pike; here's a pretty sort of place indeed for me to bring Edith to 1 And that reminds me that I'd better start fair at the very beginning, and tell you who I was, and who was Edith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phantom Death: And Other Stories On the 24th of April, 1840, having finished the business that had carried me into the Brazils, I arrived at Rio de Janeiro, where I found a vessel lying nearly loaded, and sailing for the port of Bristol in four or five days. In those times, passenger traffic between Great Britain and the eastern coast of South America was almost entirely carried on in small ships, averaging from 200 to 500 tons. The funnel of the ocean mail steamer, with her gilded saloons and side wheels, which, to the great admiration of all beholders, slapped twelve knots an hour out of the composite fabric, had not yet hove into sight above the horizon of commerce, and folks were very well satisfied if they were no longer than three months in reaching the Brazilian coast out of the River Thames. The little ship in which I took passage was a barque called the Lord of the Isles; her burden was something under four hundred tons. She was a round-bowed wagon of a vanished type, with a square, sawed-off stern, painted ports, heavy over-hanging channels, and as loftily rigged, I was going to say, as a line-of battleship, owning to her immense beam, which gave her the stability of a church. I applied to the agent and hired a cabin, and found myself, to my secret satisfaction, the only passenger in the ship.
