Book excerpt: Ship model testing has been in existence since William Froude experimented with his first models in a test basin in 1871. Model testing allows for less expensive and simpler model tests rather than the use of full-scale ships. In model testing it is not possible to scale all the parameters that enter into the problem. Typically, the Froude number, which is a key parameter defining wave formation and resistance is satisfied. However, the Reynolds number, which defines viscous forces can not be matched during the test. The error that results from this mismatch of the Reynolds number is often termed as "scale effect". This error increases as smaller models are used, thus smaller tanks should be carefully used. The problem is alleviated by the use of artificial stimulation of turbulence level in the boundary layer. In this study, a Series 63 round bottom vessel was selected as the standard model, and the Davidson Lab model resistance test results were taken as the reference. Three different scale models geometrically similar to the Davidson Lab Series 63 model have been built and tested at the DalTech Towing Tank to investigate the scale effect and correlation problems. Two kinds of stimulators have been applied, which showed distinctive test results. The comparison of three model test results to that of the Davidson Lab model has provided data for correlation errors in terms of resistance coefficients for the similar model and similar stimulator. Based on correlation studies of test results for the three geosim models, a reliable speed range can be determined for model testing at the DalTech Towing Tank. As well, the results are a guide to selecting the model size for least possible influence of scale effect. All results are presented in tabular and graphical forms.
