Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ship and the Island 'Grandfather! I want to speak to you.' 'Well, my little boy; what have you to say?' 'Can't you guess, grandfather? I want you to tell us another story.' 'Oh, that's it, is it? Well, go and call your brothers and sisters; and then we will settle what it shall be about.' 'Now, grandfather, we are all ready. You once said that some extraordinary events had taken place in the last century; can you not tell us something about them?' 'Quite right; many events took place in the last century, some of them the most interesting and extraordinary the world has ever seen. There were the great American War of Independence, the voyages of Captain Cook round the world, and the memorable French Revolution, besides so many wonderful inventions and discoveries, that you would grow tired of listening to all the stories that could be told about them.' 'Oh, grandfather! we can never grow tired of your stories; we have been thinking we should like one about adventures on the sea.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Shipbuilders of Elm Island The natural progress of this series has brought us to a period in the history of our young friends, when, instead of labors in a measure voluntary, pursued at home, amid home comforts, they toil tor exacting masters or the public, enter into competition with others, feel the pressure of re sponsibility, learn submission, and are tied down to rigid rules and severe tasks. The manner in which they meet and sustain these new and trying relations shows the stuff they are made of; that the fear of God in a young heart is a shield in the hour' of temptation, the foundation of true courage, and the strongest incentive to manly effort; that he who does the best for his. Book An Island Cabin Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Island Cabin Classic Reprint written by Arthur Henry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Island Cabin While the world on shore is gasping in the heat I am sitting on the porch of my island cabin, the sound of the incoming tide in my ears, the cool salt air sweeping about me. There are those so poor that they must walk through the blazing streets to their work in stores and factories. There are those rich enough to idle the summer in mountain and water-side resorts. I belong to neither of these classes, nor to any of the grades between. I am so poor in pocket that, were I in the city, I should often walk to save my nickel, and yet my days are filled with such comfort and delight as only the possessor of millions is supposed to enjoy. I am lord of an Isle. The nearest mainland is a mile away. I have not seen a policeman nor disagreed with my neighbor for a month. There are days together when the wide stretch of water between me and all laws and customs is rough enough to swamp a boat. Every stone and inch of earth, the great rocks and smooth white beach of my little kingdom are mine to do with as I will. The wind and water bring food and fuel to my borders, requiring of me only the effort of taking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. J o and Betty were sitting on the stone wall when the bear-boy came along the road, and their hearts had beat fast when he stopped and spoke to them. When they first saw him coming over the top of the hill they knew him, and they had hoped, for one exciting moment, that he had the bear with him, as he had on the day when he passed through Bunchberry Corner. Still, it was very delightful and wonderful even to have him come along on their road, and to have him stop to speak to them, and to look at him.
