Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sherwood Foresters in the Great War, 1914-1919, 1/8th Battalion To me, perhaps naturally, the most interesting part of the book is the early chapters. From the time, in 1911, when I took over the command Of what, I was informed by a Staff Officer qualified to know, was the best Territorial Brigade in the Kingdom, I was a firm believer in the Territorial Force. But I hardly think that the most hardened Optimist would at that time have thought it possible for a Territorial Division to mobilise and march complete with equipment and Transport to its Mobilisation area on the sixth day after receiving the order Mobilise. The amount of work done by Battalions and Companies was marvellous and only those who experienced it can have an idea of what it meant. Book excerpt: "When the 8th Sherwood Foresters concentrated at Hunmanby, at the end of July, 1914, for their usual annual training, the International horizon was clouded with the diplomatic conversations which had followed the murder of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria by Servians at Sarajevo. Many hoped, no doubt, that the experience of the Morocco incident of 1905 and the Agadir incident of 1911, would again be repeated and that once more the clouds of a world war would be dissipated, but when we reflect upon this period of the world's history it is easy now to see that war with Germany, sooner or later, was inevitable."

All that has been attempted has been a simple narrative of our doings for the use primarily of persons connected with the Battalion. My main endeavour throughout, has been to secure accuracy, but it will be understood that in sifting the mass of material placed at my disposal, errors may have crept in. I trust, however, that these are few."" This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sherwood Foresters in the Great War, 1914-1918: The 2/8th Battalion IN writing this History of the gallant deeds of my comrades, I have endeavoured to temper tragedy with comedy, and to weave among the sorrows of War all those little intimate happenings, the memory of which are the salt of Regimental Life. By so doing I hope to make this Book more readable, not only to those who have served with the Battalion, but to the General Public by whose verdict it must stand or fall. My main objects, however, in writing this preface are to give myself the Opportunity of thanking those Officers who have written Chapters in this book, or have given me invaluable help in many matters with which they were more conversant than I. Without their assist ance this Book could not have been written. Also to express my deep appreciation of the loyal devotion - I can call it by no other name - which all Ranks gave ungrudgingly to the Battalion and myself. Lastly I wish to offer my grateful homage to the memory of those brave souls who served with me and have fought their last fight. Book 1 8th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in the Great War

Download or read book 1 8th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in the Great War written by W. C. C. Weetman and published by . This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A British territorial battalion during the First World War The Sherwood Foresters were described before the outbreak of the Great War as part of the 'best territorial brigade in the kingdom.' These were part time soldiers mainly from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and, of course, they derived their regimental name from the great forest of Sherwood, legendary haunt of Robin Hood. The magnitude of the 1914-18 war demanded a huge and steady supply of manpower from Britain and its colonies and so the attrition of the early period of the war made the mobilisation of the Territorial Force inevitable. Thus it was that these amateur soldiers, together with others who had volunteered, were destined to fight their war on the Western Front and in the author of this book they had an able chronicler to record their services. Most regimental histories of this period include a list of engagements which reads like a history of the war and this book is no exception; here are the Salient, the Hohenzollern Redoubt, Vimy Ridge and the Somme together with descriptions of the regiment's achievements at Gommecourt, Bellacourt, Lens, St. Elie, Hill 70, Gorre, Essars and other iconic engagements. It was not until the last bullet had been fired that the men who survived marched home again. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain William Charles Cumming Weetman (1885-? ) was the British author of The Sherwood Foresters in the Great War 1914-1919 (1920). "The author has described fully the training carried out at Harpenden and in Essex, and that the time and labour spent in it were not wasted is proved by the manner in which all ranks so quickly took on their responsibilities in the trenches, and with such success. That the Territorial Force was in many ways neglected by the Higher Authorities during those early days is well known, but that the Force amply justified itself is proved by its actions and was fully recognised by those General Officers under whose command it came. The following extract from a speech made by Lieut-General Sir C. Fergusson, Commanding II Corps, to the Brigade at Locre, when it left his command, is worth recording to show the high opinion he held of our work in front of Kemmel. "No Battalion, " he said, "and no Brigade could have held the lines better than you have done or have done better work than you have done.... Your work during the last three months is work of which any Brigade and any Battalion might be proud. " No higher praise could have been given to any troops by an officer of such standing and repute. "

Book excerpt: The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.
