Book excerpt: Hurtling from present day New York to Victorian London, The Sherlockian weaves the history of Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle into an inspired and entertaining double mystery that proves to be anything but "elementary." In December 1893, Sherlock Holmes-adoring Londoners eagerly opened their Strand magazines, anticipating the detective's next adventure, only to find the unthinkable: his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, had killed their hero off. London spiraled into mourning-crowds sported black armbands in grief-and railed against Conan Doyle as his assassin. Then in 1901, just as abruptly as Conan Doyle had "murdered" Holmes in "The Final Problem," he resurrected him. Though the writer kept detailed diaries of his days and work, Conan Doyle never explained this sudden change of heart. After his death, one of his journals from the interim period was discovered to be missing, and in the decades since, has never been found.... Or has it? When literary researcher Harold White is inducted into the preeminent Sherlock Holmes enthusiast society, The Baker Street Irregulars, he never imagines he's about to be thrust onto the hunt for the holy grail of Holmes-ophiles: the missing diary. But when the world's leading Doylean scholar is found murdered in his hotel room, it is Harold-using wisdom and methods gleaned from countless detective stories-who takes up the search, both for the diary and for the killer.

Book Sherlock Holmes from Screen to Stage

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes from Screen to Stage written by Benjamin Poore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the development of Sherlock Holmes adaptations in British theatre since the turn of the millennium. Sherlock Holmes has become a cultural phenomenon all over again in the twenty-first century, as a result of the television series Sherlock and Elementary, and films like Mr Holmes and the Guy Ritchie franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. In the light of these new interpretations, British theatre has produced timely and topical responses to developments in the screen Sherlocks’ stories. Moreover, stage Sherlocks of the last three decades have often anticipated the knowing, metafictional tropes employed by screen adaptations. This study traces the recent history of Sherlock Holmes in the theatre, about which very little has been written for an academic readership. It argues that the world of Sherlock Holmes is conveyed in theatre by a variety of games that activate new modes of audience engagement.

Book Sherlock Holmes and The Sword of Osman

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes and The Sword of Osman written by Tim Symonds and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s 1906. Far from England, the Ottoman Empire ruled by the despotic Sultan Abd-ul-Hamid 11 is on the verge of imploding. Rival Great Powers, especially Kaiser Wilhelm’s Germany, sit watching like crows on a fence, ready to rush in to carve up the vast territories, menacing England’s vital overland routes to her Indian possessions. At his medical practice in London’s Marylebone Watson receives a mystifying telegram. It’s from Holmes. ‘Dear Watson, if you can throw physic to the dogs for an hour or two I would appreciate meeting at the stone cross at Charing Cross railway station tomorrow noon. I have an assignation with a bird lover at the Stork & Ostrich House in the Regents Park which has excited my curiosity. Yrs. S.H.’ Watson finds the invitation puzzling. Why should such a mundane meeting at a Bird House excite the curiosity of Europe’s most famous investigating detective or anyone else? For old times’ sake Watson joins his old comrade-in-arms. Within days Holmes and Watson find themselves aboard HMS Dreadnought en route to Stamboul, a city of fabled opulence, high espionage and low intrigue. Their mission: at all costs stop a plot which could bring about the immediate collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

Book From Holmes to Sherlock

Download or read book From Holmes to Sherlock written by Mattias Boström and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If you love Sherlock Holmes, you’ll love this book…the best account of Baker Street mania ever written.”—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Winner of the Agatha Award for best nonfiction work Edgar Award finalist for best critical/biographical work Anthony Award finalist for best critical/nonfiction work Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes. But what made this fictional character, dreamed up by a small-town English doctor in the 1880s, into such a lasting success, despite the author’s own attempt to escape his invention? In From Holmes to Sherlock, Swedish author and Baker Street Irregular Mattias Boström recreates the full story behind the legend for the first time. From a young Arthur Conan Doyle sitting in a Scottish lecture hall taking notes on his medical professor’s powers of observation to the pair of modern-day fans who brainstormed the idea behind the TV sensation Sherlock, from the publishing world’s first literary agent to the Georgian princess who showed up at the Conan Doyle estate and altered a legacy, the narrative follows the men and women who have created and perpetuated the myth. It includes tales of unexpected fortune, accidental romance, and inheritances gone awry, and tells of the actors, writers, readers, and other players who have transformed Sherlock Holmes from the gentleman amateur of the Victorian era to the odd genius of today. From Holmes to Sherlock is a singular celebration of the most famous detective in the world—a must for newcomers and experts alike. “Riveting…[A] wonderfully entertaining history.”?TheWall Street Journal “Celebrates the versatility of one of fiction’s most beloved characters…terrific.”?TheChristian Science Monitor

Kassa, David Marcum, Adrian Middleton, and a poem by Kevin Patrick McCann. 53 New Traditional Canonical Holmes Adventures Collected in Three Companion Volumes Throughout the original Holmes Canon, there were hints and teases of other intriguing cases - The Tarleton Murders . . . The Grice-Paterson Curse . . . The Abernetty Tragedy. Watson mentions over one-hundred-and-twenty of these, which have collectively come to be known as The Untold Cases. Now, once again MX Publishing brings us fifty-three of these adventures in three simultaneously published volumes, with all royalties going to support the Undershaw school for special needs children, located at one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's former homes. "Somewhere in the vaults of the bank of Cox and Co., at Charing Cross, there is a travel-worn and battered tin dispatch box with my name, John H. Watson, M.D., Late Indian Army, painted upon the lid. It is crammed with papers, nearly all of which are records of cases to illustrate the curious problems which Mr. Sherlock Holmes had at various times to examine . . . ." - Dr. John H. Watson So wrote Dr. Watson in "The Problem of Thor Bridge" - and ever since, Sherlockians have been seeking to know more about these tales from the legendary Tin Dispatch Box. While Watson's original Literary Agent only edited the pitifully few sixty stories that make up the original Canon, there have since been literally thousands of traditional adventures about the true Sherlock Holmes - and yet there will never be enough! In 2018, MX Publishing presented Parts XI and XII of this acclaimed and ongoing series, Some Untold Cases, and then in 2020, Parts XXII, XXIII, and XXIV returned to that theme with Some More Untold Cases. Now that concept is revisited with more Sherlock Holmes adventures that further explore those many tantalizing references to some of Holmes's other Untold Cases, as mentioned in The Canon. Join us as we return to Baker Street and discover more authentic adventures of Sherlock Holmes, described by the estimable Dr. Watson as "the best and wisest . . . whom I have ever known."

Since the beginning, all contributor royalties go to the Undershaw school for special needs children, at one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's former homes, and to date the project has raised over $120,000 for the school. As has become the tradition, this new collection of 63 adventures features Holmes and Watson carrying out their masterful investigations from Holmes's life before meeting Watson, to the early days of their friendship in Baker Street, all the way to World War I. Along the way, they are involved in some fascinating mysteries that progress along completely unexpected lines.
