Book Pediatric Pelvic and Proximal Femoral Osteotomies

Download or read book Pediatric Pelvic and Proximal Femoral Osteotomies written by Reggie C. Hamdy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique, case-based text offers a comprehensive discussion of pelvic and proximal femoral osteotomies in the pediatric population. Beginning with chapters on preoperative planning and radiologic evaluation of the adolescent hip, subsequent chapters are sensibly divided into three thematic sections, which use a consistent chapter format presenting the case history, relevant imaging, treatment goals, the management strategy, and clinical pearls and pitfalls. Part I describes the various pediatric pelvic osteotomies, including the Salter, Pol de Coeur, Tönnis, Pemberton, and San Diego approaches, among others. Pediatric proximal femoral osteotomies comprise part II, presenting the McHale procedure, varus and valgus osteotomies, Morscher osteotomy, and Shepherd’s Crook deformity, to name just a few. The final section covers combined and miscellaneous osteotomies and procedures for the pediatric hip, such as osteochondroplasty, hip instability, hip arthrodesis, and SUPERhip and SUPERhip2 procedures for congenital femoral deficiency. Each chapter is generously illustrated and includes a handy table of indications and contraindications for the procedure described. In infancy, childhood and adolescence, the hip joint is very susceptible to abnormalities (congenital or acquired) that may lead to morphological alterations with potential sequelae, specifically pain and difficulty to ambulate, sit and perform daily activities. Restoring normal anatomy and biomechanics of the hip joint by various pelvic and/or proximal femoral osteotomies remains the cornerstone in the management of these conditions. To this end, Pediatric Pelvic and Proximal Femoral Osteotomies will be an invaluable resource for all pediatric orthopedic surgeons, trainees and students both in the medical and paramedical field.

Book The Good Shepherd

Download or read book The Good Shepherd written by Jennifer Awes Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A statuette of Egyptian King Pepi formidably wielding a shepherd's crook stands in stark contrast to a fresco of an unassuming Orpheus-like youth gently hoisting a sheep around his shoulders. Both images, however, occupy an extensive tradition of shepherding motifs. In the transition from ancient Near Eastern depictions of the keeper of flocks as one holding great power to the more "pastoral" scenes of early Christian art, it might appear that connotations of rulership were divested from the image of the shepherd. The reality, however, presents a much more complex tapestry. The Good Shepherd: Image, Meaning, and Power traces the visual and textual depictions of the Good Shepherd motif from its early iterations as a potent symbol of kingship, through its reimagining in biblical figures, such as the shepherd-king David, and onward to the shepherds of Greco-Roman literature. Jennifer Awes Freeman reveals that the figure of the Good Shepherd never became humble or docile but always carried connotations of empire, divinity, and defensive violence even within varied sociopolitical contexts. The early Christian invocation of the Good Shepherd was not simply anti-imperial but relied on a complex set of associations that included king, priest, pastor, and sacrificial victim--even as it subverted those meanings in the figure of Jesus, both shepherd and sacrificial lamb. The concept of the Good Shepherd continued to prove useful for early medieval rulers, such as Charlemagne, but its imperial references waned in the later Middle Ages as it became more exclusively applied to church leaders. Drawing on a range of sources including literature, theological treatises, and political texts, as well as sculpture, mosaics, and manuscript illuminations, The Good Shepherd offers a significant contribution as the first comprehensive study of the long history of the Good Shepherd motif. It also engages the flexible and multivalent abilities of visual and textual symbols to convey multiple meanings in religious and political contexts.

Book excerpt: DIVThe novel that began as a radio hoax, Theodore Sturgeon’s I, Libertine is a hilarious erotic romp through the royal boudoirs of eighteenth-century London/divDIV Inspired by a notorious radio hoax in the mid-1950s, popular radio host and prankster Jean Shepherd exhorted his faithful listeners to approach their local booksellers the next morning and request copies of the historical novel I, Libertine by Frederick R. Ewing—a book that had never been written, by an author who had never been alive. The hoax was so successful that I, Libertine became the talk of the town, even earning the unique distinction of being banned by the Archdiocese of Boston, despite the fact that it didn’t yet exist. Now there was nothing left to do but write the thing . . . and fantasy and science fiction legend Theodore Sturgeon was called in to work his magic./divDIV /divDIVOriginally written pseudonymously, Sturgeon’s I, Libertine is a glorious tale of close shaves, daring escapes, and wildly licentious behavior. It covers the bawdy misdeeds of Captain Lance Courtenay as he carelessly romps through the royal court and the bedchambers of London’s finest ladies. Chock-full of wicked wit and Sturgeon’s trademark twists and turns, it is a hilarious, picaresque adventure that Ewing himself would certainly have been proud to call his own, if he had existed./divDIV /divDIVThis ebook features an illustrated biography of Theodore Sturgeon including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the University of Kansas’s Kenneth Spencer Research Library and the author’s estate, among other sources./div

C. R. Lorac's classic rural mystery returns to print for the first time since 1953. This edition includes an introduction by award-winning author Martin Edwards. "I'm minded of the way a fire spreads in dry bracken when we burn it off the fellside: tongues of flame this way and that—tis human tongues and words that's creeping like flames in brushwood." It all began up at High Gimmerdale with the sheep-stealing, a hateful act in the shepherding fells above the bend in the Lune River—the Crook o' Lune. Then came the fire at Aikengill house and with the leaping of the flames, death, disorder, and dangerous gossip came to the quiet moorlands. Visiting his friends, the Hoggetts, while searching for some farmland to buy up ahead of his retirement, Chief Inspector Robert Macdonald's trip becomes a busman's holiday when he is drawn to investigate the deadly blaze and the deep-rooted motives behind the rising spate of crimes.

Book Shepherds After My Own Heart

Download or read book Shepherds After My Own Heart written by Timothy S. Laniak and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture says, "I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding" (Jeremiah 3:15). Most of Israel's pastoral imagery is grounded in two traditions: Moses as God's under-shepherd and David as shepherd-king. These traditions, explains author Timothy S. Laniak, provided prototypes for leaders that followed, and formed the background for the ministry of Jesus, the good shepherd. The pastoral role was central to the ongoing life of local churches in the Christian movement, and today's pastors are still called to be shepherds after God's own heart, to lead his people, living on the margins of settled society, to their eternal home. In this excellent study, Laniak draws on a wide range of Old and New Testament texts to develop the biblical theology of "shepherd" imagery, and concludes with some principles and implications for contemporary pastoral ministry. A wonderful resource for pastors, teachers and seminary students, as well as readers interested in the study of biblical imagery.
