Book excerpt: Nineteenth Century Collections Online: European Literature, 1790-1840: The Corvey Collection includes the full-text of more than 9,500 English, French and German titles. The collection is sourced from the remarkable library of Victor Amadeus, whose Castle Corvey collection was one of the most spectacular discoveries of the late 1970s. The Corvey Collection comprises one of the most important collections of Romantic era writing in existence anywhere -- including fiction, short prose, dramatic works, poetry, and more -- with a focus on especially difficult-to-find works by lesser-known, historically neglected writers. The Corvey library was built during the last half of the 19th century by Victor and his wife Elise, both bibliophiles with varied interests. The collection thus contains everything from novels and short stories to belles lettres and more populist works, and includes many exceedingly rare works not available in any other collection from the period. These invaluable, sometimes previously unknown works are of particular interest to scholars and researchers. European Literature, 1790-1840: The Corvey Collection includes: * Novels and Gothic Novels * Short Stories * Belles-Lettres * Short Prose Forms * Dramatic Works * Poetry * Anthologies * And more Selected with the guidance of an international team of expert advisors, these primary sources are invaluable for a wide range of academic disciplines and areas of study, providing never before possible research opportunities for one of the most studied historical periods. Book Abraham Fraunce The Shepherds Logic and Other Dialectical Writings

Download or read book Abraham Fraunce The Shepherds Logic and Other Dialectical Writings written by Zenón Luis-Martínez and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham Fraunce’s The Shepherds’ Logic (c. 1585) is one of the first English adaptations of Petrus Ramus’s Dialecticae libri duo (1556). Preserved in a manuscript also containing two shorter essays on Ramist dialectic, the work was later modified and enlarged for publication as The Lawyers’ Logic (1588). But Fraunce’s substantial and almost exclusive use of Edmund Spenser’s The Shepherds’ Calendar (1579) as the source for practical examples makes the manuscript treatise a unique document revealing the influence of the Ramist reform of the arts of discourse on the new literary elite led by Philip Sidney and Gabriel Harvey. This is the first published critical edition of Fraunce’s early treatise and the two companion essays. It presents the texts in modernized spelling, traces their sources and contexts, and draws out their literary and philosophical implications. It also includes relevant excerpts from The Lawyers’ Logic, such as Fraunce’s quantitative-verse translation of Virgil’s Second Eclogue and its Ramist analysis, and a full catalogue of the quotations from Spenser’s Calendar. As a whole, this edition sees Fraunce’s pastoral logic as a first-hand testimony showing how scholarly training in the Renaissance arts of discourse enlightened the composition and interpretation of poetic texts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shepherds' Calendar This little book of music to the ear and to the mind was published in the year 1579, as the work of a new poet, introduced to the world by his friend E. K. An old colle e com anion, Edmund Kirke. The new poet was dmun Spenser, then twenty-six years, now three hundred and thirty-six years old and ever young. Edmund S ehser was of a Lancashire family, settled at Hurstwoo near Burnley, and in other parts of the same district. A. Lettice Nowell married a Lawrence Spenser, and we find aid to the education of Spenser the poet in a ms. Of the spending of the money of Robert Nowell. Book Edmund Spenser s Shepheardes Calender 1579

Download or read book Edmund Spenser s Shepheardes Calender 1579 written by Kenneth Borris and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spenser’s extraordinary Shepheardes Calender as first printed in 1579 is arguably the seminal book of the Elizabethan literary renaissance. This volume reassesses it as a material text in relation to book history, and provides the first clearly detailed facsimile of the 1579 Calender available as a book. The editor reconsiders the original book’s development, production, design, and particular characteristics, and demonstrates both its correlations with diverse precursors in print and its significant departures. Numerous illustrations of archival sources facilitate comparison. By reinvestigating the 1579 Calender’s twelve pictures, he shows that Spenser himself probably designed them, that they involve complex symbolism, and that this book’s meaning is thus profoundly verbal-visual. An analyzed facsimile is an essential new resource for study of Spenser’s Calender, Spenser, Elizabethan print and poetics, and early modern English literary history.
