Book The Sheep and Its Cousins Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sheep and Its Cousins Classic Reprint written by Richard Lydekker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sheep and Its Cousins Although the subject is chiefly discussed from the natural history point of view, the mode of treatment ought to render the book useful and interesting to breeders and flock-masters, as well as to that large class of readers who take an intelligent interest in everything relating to the animal life of the world around them. Whether it will lead to experiments with regard to introducing into Great Britain the breeds of which the lambs yield the valuable Astrakhan pelts, the future alone will show. As the various species and races of wild sheep are discussed in another and larger volume by myself, they are treated but briefly in the present one, which contains, however, fuller information with regard to many of the local races, and also indicates some important changes and modifications in classification. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIII TYPICAL WILD SHEEP OF ASIA AND AMERICA As wild sheep form the subject of several works 1 and numerous articles in scientific journals, they are discussed much less fully in the present volume than the domesticated breeds, of which the account given in the preceding chapters is claimed to be unique. In Asia wild sheep inhabit the Troodos mountains of Cyprus, and the more or less continuous mountain-chains extending from Anatolia on the extreme west of Asia Minor, through Armenia, Persia, Baluchistan, the north-west frontier districts of India, Afghanistan, Bokhara, Turkestan, the Altai, the Pamirs, the Himalaya, Tibet, the Tian Shan, and Mongolia to the Yana and Kamchatka in the extreme north-east. On the American side of Bering Strait they reappear in Alaska, whence they range southwards through the chain of the Rocky Mountains to the highlands of Mexico. 'E.g. Wild Oxen, Sheep, and Goats, by the present writer, London, 1908. The classification of the sheep there given is somewhat out of date, and an amended scheme, likewise by the present writer, will be found in the sixth edition of Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, London, 1911. 35a Their most western representative is the red sheep or red mouflon of Cyprus, Asia Minor, and Persia. On the frontiers of the last-named country and Turkestan we enter the domain of the urial or shapo, which extends into the Himalaya; Central Asia is the home of the argalis, the biggest and finest representatives of the whole group; while in the neighbourhood of the Yana and in Kamchatka we encounter the bighorns, which reappear in North America, where they are the sole wild representatives of their kind. The central Himalaya and Tibet form the home of the aberrant bharal or blue sheep, which...

Book Black Sheep and Kissing Cousins

Download or read book Black Sheep and Kissing Cousins written by Elizabeth Stone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When someone says, at a holiday dinner table, "Oh, those Lawrence cousins lose control all the time," or "the Davises always had more talent than luck," you can be sure there's a lesson being passed along, from one generation to another. Who tells stories to whom and about what is never a random matter. Our family stories have a secret power: they play a unique role in shaping our identity, our sense of our place in the world. The give us values, inspirations, warnings, incentives. We need them. We use them. We keep them. They reverberate throughout our lives, affecting our choices in love, work, friendship, and lifestyle. Elizabeth Stone, whose grandparents came from Italy to Brooklyn, artfully weaves her own family stories among the stories of more than a hundred people of all backgrounds, ages, and regions - clarifying for us predictable types of family legends, providing ways to interpret our own stories and their roles in our lives. She examines stories of birth, death, work, money, romantic adventure - all in the context of the family storytelling ritual. And she shows how stories about our most ancient ancestors may provide answers at milestone moments in our lives, as well as how stories about our newest family members carve out places for them so they will fit into their families, comfortably or otherwise. Upon its initial publication in 1988, Studs Terkel said that the book is "A wholly original approach to an ancient theme: family storytelling and its lasting mark on the individual." Judy Collins noted that "Elizabeth Stone's marvelous book on family myths and fables is irresistible. It lets us in on our own secrets in a provocative and exciting way." And Maggie Scarf wrote, "What a clever topic, and how beautifully Elizabeth Stone has written about it! I recommend Black Sheep and Kissing Cousins for everyone who has ever been raised in a family."
