Book excerpt: For many, the mind is one’s own. For a few, however, the inner self is a fragmentary and hellish nightmare of darkness, madness, and despair. Join us in a journey of pain, loss, and fragmentation. Join us in the darkness of the divided spirit. The strong survive indeed, but at what cost? When survival means becoming the Incarnation of Darkness and Death Magic, what then is the nature of survival? The one has become many, and the singular voice is dead, replaced by the chaotic, dissonant dirge. Is there some power that can possibly turn the screams in the darkness into a chorus of voices? The whole is destroyed, and what remains is a Shattered Crystal.

Book excerpt: Shattered Crystal Book One of the Crystal Fae Written by M.T. Syler Growing up, Melancholy Brown faced a series of hardships that tested her resolve. However, her dreams offered her an escape, as she found solace in a magical world filled with Fae. In this world, she watches the adventures of Kleptis Klein, a skilled assassin employed by the Thieves Guild in Jelaria, and his sister Mystic. Despite facing difficulties in the real world, Melancholy finds herself feeling more at home in this dream world and longs to stay there permanently. Although she acknowledges that the world she escapes to might just be a figment of her imagination, she doesn't mind. To her, it's a much-needed escape from reality. All my life I've always tried to roll with the punches, learning to keep myself calm when everything around me was going to shit. I'd learned a long time ago that fighting back against your fate only made things worse. Sometimes you just had to take what life gave you and make shitty lemonade out of it. Even if the lemons it gave you were moldy and full of worms. Jelaria is my escape, a world that I visit only in my dreams. It feels more real to me than my actual reality, and I long to stay there permanently. The fact that it may not be real does not matter to me, for it could just as easily be a fantasy created by a lonely child. All I know is that I want to stay there forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He married the girl of his dreams...and stepped headfirst into a nightmare. Tim and Crystal are blissfully happy together, until Shane moves into their quiet little trailer park. The outlaw biker is mysterious, a little dangerous, and ruggedly handsome. Crystal is instantly captivated by his sexy body and no-holds-barred lifestyle. Shane is happy to help fulfill their sexual fantasies...and then introduce Crystal to the steamy world of stripping, Meth addiction, and drug trafficking. She's the perfect drug mule...gorgeous, naive, seductively innocent. No one will ever suspect her of a thing...until it all comes crashing down around her ears! Excerpt "I met your mule today," Jingles admitted, then raised both hands when Shane looked at him sharply. "I just said hi, buddy. That's it." "Good. I need her...for now." Cautiously Jingles scanned the room, then turned back. "Look here, man. You got your mules, and you got the hook in 'em. That method works, and I use it, too...but eventually they ain't gonna be reliable enough to make deliveries. Too much risk to both our organizations. Know what I'm saying?" He knew exactly what Jingles was getting at. "I expect them to quit at some point." "Yeah, but they're still a risk to your club. I mean, what happens if one of them gets clean, or finds religion, or gets busted? You and your club could find yourselves in court or, worse, in another jail cell. "I got a better solution. Sell them to me." Jingles' expression was serious. "I'll take them off your hands, and I guarantee they'll never be a threat to your organization in the future." "Is that right?" Despite the fact that he knew the black man was trustworthy, Shane couldn't help sneering just a little. "For argument's sake, say I'm interested. How could you guarantee they wouldn't be a risk? You gonna babysit them?" "In a way," Jingles conceded very quietly. "Listen, I have another side of my business where these girls could be put to good use. It's extremely profitable, and I'll take care of any disposals." Silently Shane considered his offer. It would definitely solve his biggest problem, because Jingles was right-sooner or later the girls would be too hooked on Meth to be useful, and they'd become a security risk. Meth always took over. No exceptions. And since the club wanted to avoid simply murdering them, they were a loose end he hadn't figured out how to tie off yet. This would be both painless and profitable. "How much?" Jingles hid his satisfaction behind a casual smile. "Well, let's take the mule I met this afternoon. If you were interested in selling her today, I'd go as high as $50k, cash on delivery. Man, she just looks like a walking, talking good time. "The girls I buy from you will either work for me, or I'll sell them to buyers overseas. In most cases, they'll start by working with higher-end clients...but eventually we'll move them to the street. They won't stay in one place for long, for a variety of reasons, and we'll manage their drug use as much as possible. "Sooner or later," he admitted, glancing at Shane, "they reach a point where their expenses outweigh their income. When that happens, we sell them to organizations in other countries, and those girls never return. It's one of our stipulations. Less profit that way," he added, cautiously glancing around again, "but I still make money, and the girls still disappear. "Once in a while, a girl like Crystal comes along, and my overseas clients will buy her immediately. It doesn't happen very often," he conceded, leaning back on the bench. "But when it does, the chick brings a really high price." Shane softly whistled. "And once they're out of the country?" Jingles' eyes hardened. "You don't want to know," he said firmly. White slavery. Brutal and ugly, but efficient...and a good option for the club, Shane thought dispassionately. Eliminating the mules' security risk was more important than the money, and he knew Lobo would approve"

Book excerpt: What is form? Why does form matter? In this imaginative and ambitious study, Angela Leighton assesses not only the legacy of Victorian aestheticism, and its richly resourceful keyword, 'form', but also the very nature of the literary. She shows how writers, for two centuries and more, have returned to the idea of form as something which contains the secret of art itself. She tracks the development of the word from the Romantics to contemporary poets, and offers close readings of, among others, Tennyson, Pater, Woolf, Yeats, Stevens, and Plath, to show how form has provided the single most important way of accounting for the movements of literary language itself. She investigates, for instance, the old debate of form and content, of form as music or sound-shape, as the ghostly dynamic and dynamics of a text, as well as its long association with the aestheticist principle of being 'for nothing'. In a wide-ranging and inventive argument, she suggests that form is the key to the pleasure of the literary text, and that that pleasure is part of what literary criticism itself needs to answer and convey.

Book excerpt: Magnificent sound explodes from excruciating silence in space. God is created from this sound divine. He then creates his mate, Helvena. Together, they build great kingdoms. The Garden of Eden blossoms into seven continents separated by vast oceans. When satisfied that man is capable of caring for himself, God and Helvena enter other dimensions, creating new worlds. Returning to earth, they find the planet in modern time. God and Helvena appear on the streets of New York City and introduce themselves as deities. They are deemed insane. God and Helvena investigate earth until God resolves that he needs to speak with man. He says that humans are ridiculous and out of control. He warns that if they do not treat where they are as heaven, he will destroy them as he did dinosaurs. Initially, man is terrified. In time, he loses his fear and believes that God's appearance in the sky was a terrible hoax or extraordinary terrorism. When fear subsides, there is rejoicing and laughter until moments before judgment--when man is, indeed, judged.

Book The Future Life of Trauma

Download or read book The Future Life of Trauma written by Jennifer Yusin and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future Life of Trauma elaborates a transformation in the concepts of trauma and event by situating a groundbreaking encounter between psychoanalytic and postcolonial discourse. Proceeding from the formation of psychical life as presented in the Freudian metapsychology, it thinks anew the relation between temporality and traumatized subjectivity, demonstrating how the psychic event, as a traumatic event, is a material reality that alters the character of the structure of repetition. By examining the role of borders in the history of the 1947 partition of British India and the politics of memorialization in postgenocide Rwanda, The Future Life of Trauma brings to light the implications of trauma as a material event in contemporary nation-formation, sovereignty, and geopolitical violence. In showing how the form of the psyche changes in the encounter, it presents a challenge to the category of difference in the condition of identity, resulting in the formation of a concept of life that elaborates a new relation to destruction and finitude by asserting its power to transform itself.

The pacing is perfect, the characters deep and true and real, the world rich and authentic, the plot full of twists and turns. Book Deleuze Altered States and Film

Download or read book Deleuze Altered States and Film written by Anna Powell and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deleuze, Altered States and Film offers a typology of altered states, defining dream, hallucination, memory, trance and ecstasy in their cinematic expression. The book presents altered states films as significant neurological, psychological and philosophical experiences. Chapters engage with films that simultaneously present and induce altered consciousness. They consider dream states and the popularisation of alterity in drugs films. The altered bodies of erotic arousal and trance states are explored, using haptics and synaesthesia. Cinematic distortions of space and time as well as new digital and fractal directions are opened up. Anna Powell's distinctive re-mapping of the film experience as altered state uses a Deleuzian approach to explore how cinema alters us by 'affective contamination'. Arguing that specific cinematic techniques derange the senses and the mind, she makes an assemblage of philosophy and art, counter-cultural writers and filmmakers to provide insights into the cinematic event as intoxication. The book applies Deleuze, alone and with Guattari, to mainstream films like Donnie Darko as well as arthouse and experimental cinema. Offering innovative readings of 'classic' altered states movies such as 2001, Performance and Easy Rider, it includes 'avant-garde' and 'underground' work. Powell asserts the Deleuzian approach as itself a kind of altered state that explodes habitual ways of thinking and feeling.
