Book The Sharp Family Genealogical History 2003 1610

Download or read book The Sharp Family Genealogical History 2003 1610 written by J. Sharp and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the origin and movement of one Sharp family dating back to 1610. John Sharp Sr., Son of Anthony Sharp (1663-1712), was one of two primary Sharp families originating in "Little Horton" (now Bradford) England in the 13th Century. The family was split by the War of the Roses in 1470 with my lineage going North to Scotland. Our journey took us to Tyrone Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland. Next to Dumfries, and finally to Peeblesshire, Scotland. From Peeblesshire, our family ventured by sea to the Port of Philadelphia. A sizable portion settled in Kennett Square, and established a large Quaker community. Others, more adventurous, traveled by foot and wagon-train through Western Maryland, and carefully South avoiding hostile Indians to Frost, Pocahontas, Virginia. Frost took on a sizable community of Sharp's, but that was small to the number that migrated to Nicut, West Virginia, and built a permanent Sharpestablishment. If any readers of this Genealogical History have relatives that may have also traveled this route, or established residency in any of these towns.. we "May Be Related".

Book Without Precedent

Download or read book Without Precedent written by Anna R. Hayes and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first woman judge in the state of North Carolina and the first woman in the United States to be elected chief justice of a state supreme court, Susie Marshall Sharp (1907-1996) broke new ground for women in the legal profession. When she retired in 1979, she left a legacy burnished by her tireless pursuit of lucidity in the law, honesty in judges, and humane conditions in prisons. Anna Hayes presents Sharp's career as an attorney, distinguished judge, and politician within the context of the social mores, the legal profession, and the political battles of her day, illuminated by a careful and revealing examination of Sharp's family background, private life, and personality. Judge Sharp was viewed by contemporaries as the quintessential spinster, who had sacrificed marriage and family life for a successful career. The letters and journals she wrote throughout her life, however, reveal that Sharp led a rich private life in which her love affairs occupied a major place, unsuspected by the public or even her closest friends and family. With unrestricted access to Sharp's abundant journals, papers, and notes, Anna Hayes uncovers the story of a brilliant woman who transcended the limits of her times, who opened the way for women who followed her, and who improved the quality of justice for the citizens of her state. Without Precedent also tells the story of a complicated woman, at once deeply conservative and startlingly modern, whose intriguing self-contradictions reflect the complexity of human nature.

Book excerpt: On 3 August 2012, as London was gripped by the Olympics, Tia Sharp, a 12-year old schoolgirl, was reported missing from her grandmother's home in New Addington, south London. A call made by her mother, Natalie, alerted police to Tia's disappearance and so began a massive search operation to find the missing girl. Police were seconded from the Olympic village to make house-tohouse enquiries, while locals searched the nearby area.A Twitter campaign began, sparking a nationwide appeal to find Tia. It was reported that Tia had disappeared after being dropped off at a train station to go shopping, but in the days that followed a different story emerged.Only seven days after Tia was reported missing, the terrible news came that the family hoped they would never have to hear; Tia's body, wrapped in bin bags, had been found in her grandmother's attic. The truth that unfolded over the course of the day horrified the public; not only had the police searched the house on three separate occasions before discovering Tia's body, late the following evening, Stuart Hazell - the man who Tia trusted, the man who appealed for her return - was charged with her murder.Tia Sharp: A Family Betrayal examines the appalling case of an evil step-grandfather who betrayed his families trust, deceived friends and neighbours, and cut short the life of a young, well-loved girl. An insight into the facts behind the murder, the court case and the aftermath of one of the most shocking crimes a family should never have to face.

Book The Sharp End of Life

Download or read book The Sharp End of Life written by Dierdre Wolownick and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wife and mother. Teacher and musician. Marathoner and rock climber. At 66, Dierdre Wolownick-Honnold became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan in Yosemite--and in The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story, she shares her intimate journey, revealing how her climbing achievement reflects a broader story of courage and persistence. Dierdre grew up under the watchful eyes of a domineering mother and realized early on that her parents’ plans for her future weren’t what she wanted for herself. Later, what seemed like a storybook romance brought escape, with new experiences and eye-opening travel, but she quickly discovered that her husband was not the happy-go-lucky man he had first appeared. Adapting as best she could, Dierdre juggled work and raising two young children, encouraging them to be fearlessly confident. She noted with delight how her “little lady” Stasia took it upon herself to look out for her baby brother, and watched in amazement as Alex (Honnold of "Free Solo" fame) started climbing practically before he could crawl. After years of struggle in her marriage and her ultimate divorce, Dierdre found inspiration in her now-adult children’s passions, as well as new depths within herself. At Stasia’s urging, she took up running at age 54 and soon completed several marathons. Then at age 58, Alex led her on her first rock climbs. A world of friendship and support suddenly opened up to her within the climbing “tribe,” culminating in her record-setting ascent of El Cap with her son. From confused young wife and busy but lonely mother to confident middle-aged athlete, Dierdre brings the reader along as she finds new strength, happiness, and community in the outdoors--and a life of learning, acceptance, and spirit.

Sections on methods, approaches and sources allow readers new to the study of the past to explore some of the historian's fundamental concerns: cause and effect; continuity and change and the nature and reliability of evidence. The chronological and thematic organization of the book enables readers to examine a number of sub-themes such as the history of childhood or of marriage. Combining extensive contemporary quotations and an unusual variety of illustrations with a wide range of written and material sources, the book provides a fascinating insight into the history of the family and encourages the reader to become a sceptical and imaginative investigator, prepared to venture beyond the historian's traditional documentary sources.
