Book Experimental Aerodynamics

Download or read book Experimental Aerodynamics written by Bruno Chanetz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents experimental techniques in the field of aerodynamics, a discipline that is essential in numerous areas, such as the design of aerial and ground vehicles and engines, the production of energy, and understanding the wind resistance of buildings. Aerodynamics is not only concerned with improving the performance and comfort of vehicles, but also with reducing their environmental impact. The book provides updated information on the experimental and technical methods used by aerodynamicists, engineers and researchers. It describes the various types of wind tunnels – from subsonic to hypersonic – as well as the problems posed by their design and operation. The book also focuses on metrology, which has allowed us to gain a detailed understanding of the local properties of flows, and examines current developments toward creating a methodology combining experiments and numerical simulations: the computer-assisted wind tunnel. Lastly, it offers an overview of experimental aerodynamics based on a prospective vision of the discipline, and discusses potential futures challenges. The book can be used as a textbook for graduate courses in aerodynamics, typically offered to students of aerospace and mechanical engineering programs, and as a learning tool for professionals and engineers in the fields of aerodynamics, aeronautics and astronautics automobile.

Book Design of Test Sections for a High Enthalpy Wind Tunnel

Download or read book Design of Test Sections for a High Enthalpy Wind Tunnel written by Christianne Rhea Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document describes the design of a supersonic and a subsonic test section for a high enthalpy wind tunnel. A streamline is tracked through a supersonic test section using the method of characteristics. The specifics of the design program and the design techniques are illustrated for the supersonic section. The section of the paper dealing with the subsonic nozzle has a greatly diverse nature. This section details the inlet and exhaust restrictions and construction elements for the entire low speed system. The system is currently being set up for testing with the subsonic section, and the supersonic will eventually follow.

Book Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research

Download or read book Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research written by Jorge Colman Lerner and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book "Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research" is comprised of 33 chapters divided in five sections. The first 12 chapters discuss wind tunnel facilities and experiments in incompressible flow, while the next seven chapters deal with building dynamics, flow control and fluid mechanics. Third section of the book is dedicated to chapters discussing aerodynamic field measurements and real full scale analysis (chapters 20-22). Chapters in the last two sections deal with turbulent structure analysis (chapters 23-25) and wind tunnels in compressible flow (chapters 26-33). Contributions from a large number of international experts make this publication a highly valuable resource in wind tunnels and fluid dynamics field of research.

Book Effect of Heating and Cooling Strips on Boundary Layer Stability of Nozzles and Test Sections of Supersonic Wind Tunnels

Download or read book Effect of Heating and Cooling Strips on Boundary Layer Stability of Nozzles and Test Sections of Supersonic Wind Tunnels written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research is to understand supersonic laminar flow stability, transition, and active control. Some prediction techniques will be developed or modified to analyze laminar flow stability. The effects of supersonic laminar flow with distributed heating and cooling on active control will be studied. The primary tasks of the research applying to the NASA/Ames Proof of Concept (POC) Supersonic Wind Tunnel and Laminar Flow Supersonic Wind Tunnel (LFSWT) nozzle design with laminar flow control are as follows: (1) predictions of supersonic laminar boundary layer stability and transition, (2) effects of wall heating and cooling for supersonic laminar flow control, and (3) performance evaluation of POC and LFSWT nozzles design with wall heating and cooling effects applying at different locations and various length. Book A Numerical Comparison of Symmetric and Asymmetric Supersonic Wind Tunnels

Download or read book A Numerical Comparison of Symmetric and Asymmetric Supersonic Wind Tunnels written by Kylen D. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersonic wind tunnels are a vital aspect to the aerospace industry. Both the design and testing processes of different aerospace components often include and depend upon utilization of supersonic test facilities. Engine inlets, wing shapes, and body aerodynamics, to name a few, are aspects of aircraft that are frequently subjected to supersonic conditions in use, and thus often require supersonic wind tunnel testing. There is a need for reliable and repeatable supersonic test facilities in order to help create these vital components. The option of building and using asymmetric supersonic converging-diverging nozzles may be appealing due in part to lower construction costs. There is a need, however, to investigate the differences, if any, in the flow characteristics and performance of asymmetric type supersonic wind tunnels in comparison to symmetric due to the fact that asymmetric configurations of CD nozzle are not as common. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study has been conducted on an existing University of Michigan (UM) asymmetric supersonic wind tunnel geometry in order to study the effects of asymmetry on supersonic wind tunnel performance. Simulations were made on both the existing asymmetrical tunnel geometry and two axisymmetric reflections (of differing aspect ratio) of that original tunnel geometry. The Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations are solved via NASA's OVERFLOW code to model flow through these configurations. In this way, information has been gleaned on the effects of asymmetry on supersonic wind tunnel performance. Shock boundary layer interactions are paid particular attention since the test section integrity is greatly dependent upon these interactions. Boundary layer and overall flow characteristics are studied. The RANS study presented in this document shows that the UM asymmetric wind tunnel/nozzle configuration is not as well suited to producing uniform test section flow as that of a symmetric configuration, specifically one that has been scaled to have equal aspect ratio. Comparisons of numerous parameters, such as flow angles, pressure (both static and stagnation), entropy, boundary layers and displacement thickness, vorticity, etc. paint a picture that shows the symmetric equal aspect ratio configuration to be decidedly better at producing desirable test section flow. It has been shown that virtually all parameters of interest are both more consistent and have lower deviation from ideal conditions for the symmetric equal area configuration.
