Faux suede, colorful fabrics, or serger edging compete for the perfect finish.5-One Layer Coat - Choose the perfect fabric for a one layer coat. Shirley demonstrates the one layer coat with and without a pattern. Finish the interior attractively. Let the fabric make suitable choices for seams and fasteners. 6-One The Edge: The simple one layer coat you created in "One Layer Coat" needs those edges professionally finished. Let Shirley show you stylish and functional ways to perfect the look.7-Altering Man-Made Suede: Lose or gain a little weight? Make changes on seam lines to perfectly fit your new size or style. Learn to insert a zipper without a seam. Faux suede is timeless, yet expensive. Learn to avoid mistakes or fix them when they occur.8-Distorting the Facts: Stitching or ironing, either method allows simple shapes to take on a sophisticated air when cut up and arranged in appliqué. Whether updating old ugly sweaters or inventing an exciting scene for your little ones, distorting the fabrics give you an outlet for your inner artist and updates old clothing or fabrics. 9-Create A Collar: Add a collar to a garment you've already created or purchased. When your pattern has a high jewel neck, but you want a collar, add it to your pattern with ease. Collar types demonstrated: Rolled, mandarin, tuxedo, fitted.10-Turtle Quilt: Delight the children with this self-contained quilt that folds up inside the turtle cover, and includes its own pillow.11-Make It Special: Why make just another garment to drape your body? Study expensive designer fashion and use those ideas to create your style. Spend your energy, fabric, money, and time on something special. Shirley demonstrates quilting, draping, fabric choice, and creates a belt to liven up a simple dress.12-Little Black Dress: An important piece of your wardrobe. Alter that simple dress for any occasion. Shirley's basic black is a three-season tissue faille, but she also has black linen for summer, black wool jersey for winter, and black velvet for special occasions. Alter your basic pattern with style accents for fashion, comfort, or your taste, and make any number of these fabulous versatile garments.13-Night on The Town: Take your little black dress on the town with glittery accents, a spectacular metallic jacket, or a glitzy wrap. Shirley shows off an emerald green jacket in silk jacquard made from imported fabric that sat silently in her stash until it decided what it wanted to be. Bonus Reversible chapter 14

Book Quilt As You Go Made Modern

Download or read book Quilt As You Go Made Modern written by Jera Brandvig and published by C&T Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to create modern quilts more quickly and easily than ever with this popular method, featuring thirteen projects and twenty-five bonus ideas. Do you believe rules were meant to be broken? If so, this improvisational quilt-as-you-go technique is for you. Instead of dealing with precise paper patterns and cutting measurements, you’ll learn how to piece fabric onto small, manageable batting blocks. Let your creative juices flow as you quilt directly on the blocks (not the whole quilt!), whether in large abstract zigzags or small structured stitches. After the blocks have been joined, all you need to do is add backing fabric and binding, and—voila—it’s finished! A modern approach to quilting that’s fresh, fun, and simpler than it sounds; it will change the way you quilt (for the better) Great for moms or anyone with a busy schedule—these thirteen projects are easy to transport because they make it simple to pick up where you left off Go your own way: This method allows you to use a pattern or improvise, creating a wide variety of design options Save money! Learn how to finish your own quilts without the use of a longarm professional “Quilting is easier than ever with Jera Brandvig’s modern spin on the popular quilt-as-you-go technique.” —Modern Quilts Unlimited “Quilt-as-you-go (QAYG) is one of those techniques that every quilter is curious about trying, but can be daunting as the process is so different to the traditional process of making a quilt top and then quilting it. . . . The book introduces the technique very thoroughly, so you can clearly understand the difference between traditional piecing and quilting and QAYG. Then there’s a great selection of gorgeous quilts that are sure to appeal to the modern quilter. A must if you’ve ever thought about trying QAYG and haven’t had a clue where to start.” —Make Modern Magazine

Book The Repurposed Library

Download or read book The Repurposed Library written by Lisa Occhipinti and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “How-to instructions on crafting with books . . . will inspire you to think about creative ways to make new treasures out of old things” (The Virginian-Pilot). We all love to read and learn from books, but The Repurposed Library takes our passion even further, presenting us with thirty-three projects to make—quite literally—out of books. For these projects, Lisa Occhipinti rescues and repurposes orphaned and outdated books from flea markets and library sales and turns them into new art objects and practical items for the home. Her creations range from artfully constructed mobiles, wreaths, and vases, to functional items like shelves, storage boxes, and even a Kindle “keeper” for those who want to replicate the sensation of holding a “real” book while reading from an e-reader. Projects utilize every imaginable part of a book—from hardback cover to individual pages—and are a DIY celebration of a new way to view a book’s potential. “Occhipinti’s ‘repurposed’ books are truly beautiful art objects, and whether or not you’re crafty enough to give them a try yourself, her book is thoroughly enjoyable.” —Fine Books and Collections “She shows readers how to transform books into mobiles, lamp shades, even clocks.” —National Post

Book Sewing the Fabric of Statehood

Download or read book Sewing the Fabric of Statehood written by Adam M Howard and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long a bastion of Jewish labor power, garment unions provided financial and political aid essential to founding and building the nation of Israel. Throughout the project, Jewish labor often operated outside of official channels as non-governmental organizations. Adam Howard explores the untold story of how three influential garment unions worked alone and with other Jewish labor organizations in support of a new Jewish state. Sewing the Fabric of Statehood reveals a coalition at work on multiple fronts. Sustained efforts convinced the AFL and CIO to support Jewish development in Palestine through land purchases for Jewish workers and encouraged the construction of trade schools and cultural centers. Other activists, meanwhile, directed massive economic aid to Histadrut, the General Federation of Jewish Workers in Palestine, or pressured the British and American governments to recognize Israel's independence. What emerges is a powerful account of the motivations and ideals that led American labor to forge its own foreign policy and reshape both the postwar world and Jewish history.
