Book The Severed Mantle Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Severed Mantle Classic Reprint written by William Lindsey and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Severed Mantle In this book I have tried to picture Provence in the time of the troubadours. I show the "land of the nightingale and rose" when Idealism reigned supreme, with Love, Joy, and Song her counsellors. Here love first ceased to mean passion, and homage of woman grew to be a religion; the joy of life was over all, and song the natural expression of every feeling. At the very heart of it there was a great earnestness, but it was the fervor of children - children who had lofty dreams to which they could not climb. They believed that love should come to youth as the hawthorn bud to springtime, - not desire, but devotion which asked little, and found contentment in itself. No matter how strong the love or how inspired the song, it must be always controlled by "mesura." This was no less their creed, though the most devout broke the chains which held them - for the world was young. I have chosen to write with a simplicity which is not always warm and brilliant, because this manner best expresses the spirit of the time. The book is not a tale of adventure, though perils are experienced; nor is it a historical novel, though its characters breathed the soft air of Provence in the latter half of the Twelfth Century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mantle and Other Stories As a novel-writer and a dramatist, Gogol appears to me to deserve a minute study, and if the knowledge of Russian were more widely Spread, he could not fail to obtain in Europe a reputation equal to that of the best English humorists. A delicate and close observer, quick to detect the absurd, bold in exposing, but inclined to push his fun too far, Gogol is in the first place a very lively satirist. He is merciless towards fools and rascals, but he has only one weapon at his disposal - irony. This is a weapon which is too severe to use against the merely absurd, and on the other hand it is not sharp enough for the punishment of crime; and it is against crime that Gogol too often uses it. His comic vein is always too near the farcical, and his mirth is hardly contagious. If sometimes he makes his reader laugh, he still leaves in his mind a feeling of bitterness and indignation; his satires do not avenge society, they only make it angry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliant #1 New York Times bestseller Named a best book of 2020 by The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, The Guardian, and many more With The Mirror & the Light, Hilary Mantel brings to a triumphant close the trilogy she began with her peerless, Booker Prize-winning novels, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. She traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a ferocious contest between present and past, between royal will and a common man’s vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict, passion and courage. The story begins in May 1536: Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. Cromwell, a man with only his wits to rely on, has no great family to back him, no private army. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to the breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. All of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as fortune’s wheel turns, Cromwell’s enemies are gathering in the shadows. The inevitable question remains: how long can anyone survive under Henry’s cruel and capricious gaze? Eagerly awaited and eight years in the making, The Mirror & the Light completes Cromwell’s journey from self-made man to one of the most feared, influential figures of his time. Portrayed by Mantel with pathos and terrific energy, Cromwell is as complex as he is unforgettable: a politician and a fixer, a husband and a father, a man who both defied and defined his age.

Book The Flaming Sword Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flaming Sword At the head of the table, stretched in his chair, his head hanging loosely on one shoulder, his mouth gaping, sprawled a stoutish young man, in evening dress. His arms depended loosely over the chair-arm, and the fin gers of one hand, swollen below his jeweled rings, still held the end of an extinguished cigar. The candles near est him had gone out and the gray light from the win dow painted his livid face against the somber background with pitiless precision. Beside him, in another chair, the red spots in her face making its pallor and texture the more apparent, sat a girl, staring with dull eyes into vacancy. Book Merciful Unto Me a Sinner Classic Reprint

Download or read book Merciful Unto Me a Sinner Classic Reprint written by Elinor Dawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Merciful Unto Me, a Sinner Man has always been granted the privilege of telling his own story no matter how shocking it may be to the refined senses. He has boldly set out with the implied assertion that if you did not want to be startled you could exercise your own right of turning from him and leaving him un read. In all of the actual experiences of life there rests a moral. To those who hold a contrary opinion I say most frankly, go no further into this record. Young women who have tried to imagine how it would seem to live in a state of lost modesty have given their views of things of which they were happily ignorant, and we have praised them for their boldness and have invited them to tea. Their guesses were entertaining. This book is not composed of shrewd surmises. It is literal rather than literary; and it may be the guilty instead of the guiltless that shall cast the first stone at me. Let the indulgent reader pursue this record to the end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sword of Damocles, Vol. 1 of 3 "I am misanthropos, and hate mankind." Shakespeare. "Hulloa! little carroty wigs! where are you off to?" The above queer salutation, delivered in a some what sharp manner, was familiar enough to those to whom it was addressed. The little Grayles, when out for their morning airing in Barringtree Park, invariably encountered their great uncle, Mr. Andrew Grayle, and that gentleman as invariably gave them the same greeting - if it can be so called - half hearty, half sarcastic in its tone. The small party, thus arrested in its constitutional ramble, would have appeared rather picturesque and interesting to any one but Mr. Grayle, who viewed it apparently with but sinister looks of disapproval.
