Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Japan’s two great religious traditions, Shinto is far less known and understood in the West. Although there are a number of books that explain the religion and its philosophy, this work is the first in English to focus on sites where Shinto has been practiced since the dawn of Japanese history. In an extensive introductory section, authors Joseph Cali and John Dougill delve into the fascinating aspects of Shinto, clarifying its relationship with Buddhism as well as its customs, symbolism, and pilgrimage routes. This is followed by a fully illustrated guide to 57 major Shinto shrines throughout Japan, many of which have been designated World Heritage Sites or National Treasures. In each comprehensive entry, the authors highlight important spiritual and physical features of the individual shrines (architecture, design, and art), associated festivals, and enshrined gods. They note the prayers offered and, for travelers, the best times to visit. With over 125 color photographs and 50 detailed illustrations of archetypical Shinto objects and shrines, this volume will enthrall not only those interested in religion but also armchair travelers and visitors to Japan alike. Whether you are planning to visit the actual sites or take a virtual journey, this guide is the perfect companion. Book The History of the Buddha s Relic Shrine

Download or read book The History of the Buddha s Relic Shrine written by Parākrama Paṇḍita and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist chronicles have long been had a central place in the study of Buddhism. Scholars, however, have relied almost exclusively on Pali works that were composed by elites for learned audiences, to the neglect of a large number of Buddhist histories written in local languages for popular consumption. The Sinhala Thupavamsa, composed by Parakama Pandita in thirteenth-century Sri Lanka, is an important example of a Buddhist chronicle written in the vernacular Sinhala language. Furthermore, it is among those works that inform public discussion and debate over the place of Buddhism in the Sri Lankan nation state and the role of Buddhist monks in contemporary politics. In this book Stephen Berkwitz offers the first complete English translation of the Sinhala Thupavamsa. Composed in a literary dialect of Sinhala, it contains a richly descriptive account of how Buddhism spread outside of India, replete with poetic embellishments and interpolations not found in other accounts of those events. Aside from being an important literary work, the Sinhala Thupavamsa. is a text of considerable historical and religious significance. It comprises several narrative strands that relate the life story of the Buddha and the manner in which Buddhist teachings and institutions were established on the island of Sri Lanka in ancient times. The central focus of this work concerns the variety of relics associated with the historical Buddha, particularly how the relics were acquired and the presumed benefits of venerating them. The text also relates the mythological history of the Buddha's previous lives as a bodhisattva and concludes with a prediction about the future Buddha Maitreya. Reflection on Buddhist ethics and instruction on the Dharma, or the Buddha's teaching, are found throughout the work, indicating that this historical narrative was meant both to recall the past and give rise to religious practice among contemporary readers and listeners. This new translation makes a significant work more widely accessible in the West and adds to our knowledge of how local Buddhist communities imagined and represented their religious and cultural heritages in written works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eil an N Chuillean in is one of contemporary Ireland's most beloved poets. Her debut collection won the prestigious Patrick Kavanaugh Poetry Award, her poems are included on the final exam taken by all Irish secondary school students, and, in 2016 she was appointed the Ireland Professor of Poetry by Irish president Michael D. Higgins. It is this last honor that forms the backbone of Instead of a Shrine, the seventh installment in University College Dublin Press's Poet's Chair series. The three essays collected in this book examine a diverse slate of poetry-related topics and explore the forces that affect the work of every practicing poet. The first piece pays tribute to the Irish poet and translator Pearse Hutchinson (1927-2012), a valued friend and colleague of N Chuillean in's, as well as to the languages he used and the impact they had even on readers that did not fully understand them. The second looks at the often disparaging treatment of poets in fiction, ranging from P. G. Wodehouse to Flann O'Brien. In the book's final essay, N Chuillean in returns to her lifelong academic interest in the poetry of seventeenth-century England and calls on the work of poets as diverse as Bishop Henry King, Walt Whitman, and Thomas Kinsella to explore poetry's relation to the ceremonies surrounding death. Elegantly designed and masterfully written, Instead of a Shrine offers a unique opportunity to return to--or begin engaging with--the dynamic world of poetry via the intellect of one of Ireland's modern masters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 7 lectures, various cities, April 17-May 26, 1914 (CW 154) What is the relationship between those who have died and those who remain alive on Earth? Can we help those now in the spiritual world? Can they help us? In these talks, Rudolf Steiner deals with the spiritual relationships that the living can have with those who have crossed over the threshold between life and death. In a realistic, practical way, he shows how an understanding of our spiritual nature reveals ways of knowing a world undreamed of by materialists. The tone of these talks is warm and moving, clearly drawn from Steiner's own experience and the lives of those who had died and who were personally known to him--Robert Hamerling, Christian Morgenstern, and others. This important work is for those who are coming to terms with the death of a love one. This book is a translation from German of Wie erwirbt man sich Verständnis für die geistige Welt? Das Einfließen geistiger Impulse aus der Welt der Verstorbenen (GA 154).
