Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seventh Book of Vergil's Aeneid: Edited for the Use of Schools; With Translation and Vocabulary It is true that the way to learn to do a thing is to do it, and not merely to see it done. Hence boys and girls must practice translation a great deal. But they can also learn much from the study of good models; and I think teachers hardly have a right to complain of the eternal baldness of the translations of their pupils, so long as they deny them access to the best models, and do not daily Show them by their own performance to what they would have them aspire in form and diction. I have come to believe that both means are necessary frequent translations by the teacher, especially to embody and enforce criticisms of daily lessons, and a certain amount of detailed study of the best printed translations. Of the latter, the study of a single book of the Aeneid, for example, or of the Iliad or Odyssey, or of a single oration of Cicero, may be enough. A learner Should have a clear notion of what a good translation is and of the principles on which it should be worked out. If to this be added the inspiration of the teacher's example, I know not what more can be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seventh Book of Vergil's Aeneid: For the Use of Schools; With Translations and Vocabulary In this practise I have found the seventh book of the Aeneid much the most difficult of the whole poem, and that first suggested to me the desirableness of writing out a translation for my own use; further reflection led me to think that by publishing it I might do a service to students and teachers of Vergil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seventh Book of Vergil's Aeneid: Edited for the Use of Schools I very well remember hearing Dr. Francis Gardner, for forty years headmaster of the Boston Latin School, and one of the most noted classical teachers in this country, say publicly that he deemed it of small import ance that a boy should be able, at the end of the six years' course in his school, to read Cicero or Xenophon. What did he value as the outcome of so long a course of classical training? Why, a thorough knowledge of the Latin and Greek grammars; I might almost say, of Latin and Greek syntax. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the path from Troy's destruction to Rome's foundation, the Aeneid explores the transition between past and future. As the Trojans struggle to found a new city and the narrator sings of his audience's often-painful history, memory becomes intertwined with a crucial leitmotif: the challenge of being part of a group that survives violence and destruction only to face the daunting task of remembering what was lost. This book offers a new reading of the Aeneid that engages with critical work on memory and questions the prevailing view that Aeneas must forget his disastrous history in order to escape from a cycle of loss. Considering crucial scenes such as Aeneas' reconstruction of Celaeno's prophecy and his slaying of Turnus, this book demonstrates that memory in the Aeneid is a reconstructive and dynamic process, one that offers a social and narrative mechanism for integrating a traumatic past with an uncertain future.
