Book excerpt: Who do you say Jesus is? This is one of the most important questions we can answer. Wise Sage. Moral example. Profound teacher. These are but a few of the many ways that people have sought to characterize Jesus. While our articulations may have nuggets of truth and are sprinkled with understanding, how Jesus portrays himself is far more important than how we describe him. In I Am John Pennylegion explores the seven statements Jesus makes about himself in the gospel of John. By engaging with these descriptions, we understand more of who Jesus is and how we are to follow him.

Download or read book Echoes of a Prophet written by Gary T. Manning Jr. and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoes of a Prophet examines intertextual connections to Ezekiel found in John and in Second Temple literature. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain many allusions to a number of Ezekiel's oracles, while other Second Temple works refer to only a few of Ezekiel's oracles, and those only rarely. In each case, Manning examines the evidence for the presence of the allusions, studies the implied interpretational methods, and comments on the function of the allusion in advancing the author's ideas. He also analyzes John's allusions to Ezekiel: the good shepherd, the vine, the opened heavens, imagery from the "dry bones" vision, and water symbolism. He observes that John has a few unique tendencies: he alludes to all five of Ezekiel's "oracles of hope" and primarily uses that imagery to describe the giving of the Holy Spirit and new life through Jesus.

Book Mary s Voice in the Gospel According to John

Download or read book Mary s Voice in the Gospel According to John written by Michael Pakaluk and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Light on John’s Gospel The Gospel according to John has always been recognized as different from the “synoptic” accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. But what explains the difference? In this new translation and verse-byverse commentary, Michael Pakaluk suggests an answer and unlocks a twothousand-year-old mystery. Mary’s Voice in the Gospel according to John reveals the subtle but powerful influence of the Mother of Jesus on the fourth Gospel. In his dying words, Jesus committed his Mother to the care of John, the beloved disciple, who “from that hour . . . took her into his own home.” Pakaluk draws out the implications of that detail, which have been overlooked for centuries. In Mary’s remaining years on earth, what would she and John have talked about? Surely no subject was as close to their hearts as the words and deeds of Jesus. Mary’s unique perspective and intimate knowledge of her Son must have shaped the account of Jesus’ life that John would eventually compose. With the same scholarship, imagination, and fidelity that he applied to Mark’s Gospel in The Memoirs of St. Peter, Pakaluk brings out the voice of Mary in John’s, from the famous prologue about the Incarnation of the Word to the Evangelist’s closing avowal of the reliability of his account. This remarkably fresh translation and commentary will deepen your understanding of the most sublime book of the New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Book I Am

    Book Details:
  • Author : Iain D. Campbell
  • Publisher : EP BOOKS
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9780852347744
  • Pages : 121 pages

Download or read book I Am written by Iain D. Campbell and published by EP BOOKS. This book was released on 2011 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is none like Christ. None at all! None other is God and man, two natures in one person. None other has the love, grace and heart of Jehovah Jesus. The sight of him is so breath-taking that we turn aside at an opportunity that a glimpse of him affords. We cease looking at the most precious things in the universe to gaze and gaze at him. We know little of him, miserably little. It is our duty and privilege to behold him, and it is the duty and privilege of each of his preachers to show him to us. Sirs, we plead with them, we would see Jesus. Let us contemplate Christ, and let his servants magnify him before us. So in these studies Dr. Iain D. Campbell does this, making Christ omni-attractive as he sets him out through our Lord's self disclosure, in a series of extraordinary claims Jesus made, to be pre-existent, the only way to God, the food and the vine of heaven, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life. Those are words of a megalomaniac if they are not the words of the incarnate God. One of the distinctives of John's Gospel is that he records seven sayings of Jesus that are not to be found in the other three gospels, the I am' sayings of Jesus. In them, Jesus introduces us to himself by means of a phrase translated I am', followed by a description of himself.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Book Four Portraits One Jesus 2nd Edition

Download or read book Four Portraits One Jesus 2nd Edition written by Mark L. Strauss and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Christians worldwide, the man Jesus of Nazareth is the centerpiece of history, the object of faith, hope, and worship. Even those who do not follow him admit the vast influence of his life. For anyone interested in knowing more about Jesus, study of the four biblical Gospels is essential. The second edition of Four Portraits, One Jesus has been updated throughout to meet the needs to today's students. It is a thorough yet accessible introduction to the four biblical Gospels and their subject, the life and person of Jesus. Like different artists rendering the same subject using different styles and points of view, the Gospels paint four highly distinctive portraits of the same remarkable Jesus. With clarity and insight, Mark Strauss illuminates these four books addressing the following important areas: First he addresses the nature, origin, methods for study, and historical, religious, and cultural backgrounds of the Gospels. He then moves on to closer study of each narrative and its contribution to our understanding of Jesus, investigating things such as plot, characters, and theme. Finally, he pulls it all together with a detailed examination of what the Gospels teach about Jesus' ministry, message, death, and resurrection, with excursions into the quest for the historical Jesus and the historical reliability of the Gospels. This textbook together with its workbook, video lectures, and laminated sheet gives students everything they need for a thorough and enriching study of Jesus and the Gospels.
