S. National Museum: Including a Monograph of the American Species By the copious illustration of American forms, by large-scale draw ings and photographs, their identification should be easier. Until one has studied barnacles deeply enough to have standards of com parison, even the inimitable descriptions of Darwin are difficult to follow, especially if one is dealing with forms differing somewhat from those described. The appeal to the eye will often relieve the student from uncertainty. Identifying by the pictures may be a primi tive and superficial method, yet such short cuts are permissible in case one merely needs the name of an animal which has been taken as the subject of embryological, ecological, or other non-systematic studies. The student must be warned, however, that many species have parallel mutations, vary in the same way under similar condi tions, so that external form by itself is rarely a reliable criterion. The opercular valves, the details of structure of the plates of the wall, and the structure of the feet are the important characters. It was at first intended to record the species of sessile Cirripedia in the Museum, with their localities, and to describe and figure new forms. As the collection was worked over, its wealth in American barnacles became apparent and contains nealy every known species of the Western Hemisphere, many of which show variations special to American waters, altering the scope of this work which may now be described as a monograph of American sessile barnacles.

Perspective of This Volume Charles Darwin brought the Galapagos Islands to the attention of zoologists, botanists, and geologists following the six-week visit of H. M. S. Beagle to the islands in 1835. Since then published research on the biota of the islands, partic ularly in multiauthored volumes, has focused on terrestrial plants and animals. The present volume is designed specifically to provide a summary of work on the marine invertebrate fauna. One deviation from that objective was the inclusion of a chapter on land snails, which proved to be a good choice because the phylum Mollusca is now covered more thoroughly in this volume than in any single previous scholarly work on the Galapagos. The academic bottom line with this book is to elucidate the evolutionary responses of shallow water, benthic marine invertebrates to the unique set of insular conditions that exist in the Galapagos Islands. The route taken to that objective has many paths including taxonomic revision, determining biogeo graphic affinities, and examining the ecological requirements of species. The information presented here is for some groups from the islands the first stage in a thorough process that can eventually lead to an understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of these species.
