Yugoslavia's breakup in 1991 and the wars that followed in its wake have been widely blamed on Serbian nationalism. Most analyses, however, have not examined this nationalism in the years before Slobodan Milosevic's rise to power, when its principal articulators were opposition intellectuals. Jasna Dragovic-Soso asks why this strong and apparently democratic opposition movement subsequently turned towards an extreme form of nationalism and had by the end of the 1980s accepted Milosevic's undemocratic policies. Based on the author's extensive primary source research and interviews with key protagonists, Saviours of the Nation examines both the causes and the consequences of the opposition's transformation into a nationalist force. Book excerpt: Five years after the fall of Slobodan Milosevic, it is still not clear where Serbia is heading. Indeed, it is not yet clear what, or even where Serbia is. Serbia's borders and statehood remain open questions: the future status of Kosovo is unresolved and the survival of the State Union with Montenegro in doubt. As long as Serbia does not know what and where it is, its progress towards EU integration will be impeded. The political agenda remains heavily burdened by these open questions, and the baneful legacies of Milosevic's misrule. These divert politicians' attention from the equally demanding challenges of preparing for EU integration. Serbia needs to redefine its national identity and statehood in order to become capable of integrating into the EU. Serbia matters. With a population of 7.5 million, it is by far the largest country in the Western Balkans, and, as such, of crucial importance for the stability of the whole region. While the Serbs want to 'join Europe', they still do not fully trust it, and the feeling is reciprocated. Both sides now need to work to overcome their mutual incomprehension. This Chaillot Paper aims to make a start on that.

Having been ruled by the Ottoman Empire for a long period, they now had to cope with Serbia as occupant. Serbian military, police and authorities in general followed a nationalist policy of ‘Serbianisation’, which led to suppression of religious rights as well as harassment and atrocities against the non-Serbian population, especially Muslims. Ideas of ethnicity and religion played a significant role, when Serbian authorities tried to nationalise the people living in the region of “Vardar Macedonia” during the years 1912-1914. Suddenly, these people should not only be part of the state, but also the nation of Serbia. Background of this policy was the alleged common language, culture and religion of the people living in Serbia and in the new territory. In this paper, I will focus on the question of religion, which has to be seen in a close context to the ideas of nationalism and ethnicity in this region: Belonging to the Serbian nation meant belonging to the Serbian Orthodox Church. Since I will use diplomatic primary sources, my research question will be: “How did the idea of a common religion determine the policy of Serbianisation of Vardar-Macedonia in the eyes of foreign diplomats?”

The policies of the Great European Powers on the question of re-mapping the Balkan Peninsula from the time of the Great Eastern Crisis of 1875-1878 to the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 are investigated as a framework of the solving the "Albanian Question" at the turn of the 20th century. The Albanians stood at the crossroads of different spheres of territorial, economic and political interests having their own vision of creation of a Greater Albania at the Balkans as united national state for all ethnic Albanians and at such a way coming to direct confrontation with all their neighbors.
