Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Serbia's Cup of Sorrow Here in its stark simplicity is laid bare the origin of some of the horrors that Serbia has had to endure. No other nation in the welter of the world-war, great or small, has endured so much as Serbia, and yet the proud soul of this little people without a country rides triumphant above her sorrows. War, Famine, Disease - the tragic triumvirate has stalked through Serbia and laid heavy hands on its people for over three years. To-day the rem nants of the Serbian people number only two-thirds of the pre-war population. Every Briton is in honour bound to help save the Serbian race from extinction. Everyone of us should do something to support thc Serbian people and comfort them in their sorrows until that great day when we shall restore to them the country now trampled under the iron heel of the enemy. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Book Serbia and the Serbs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Serbia and the Serbs Classic Reprint written by Sir Valentine Chirol and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Serbia and the Serbs Un'hl the outbreak of the war Serbia was perhaps to most Englishmen little more than a name, and not a very acceptable name. For it was the worst pages of her history which chiefly clung to people's memory. It is not surprising, therefore, that, when Europe was suddenly threatened with a great conflagration of which Serbia was supposed to be the cause, Englishmen were inclined to visit upon her their horror and indignation. Gradually, as proofs accumulated that, whatever the demerits of Serbia, she had been used on this occasion merely as a stalking-horse for vast ambitions bent on war, a reaction set in and grew with every fresh report of her splendid gallantry in the field. It is preposed in these pages to tell as brieflv as possible the story of Serbia and of the part her people have played throughout the course of events that have been leading up for many years past to the present catastrophe - a part that has been neither unimportant nor discreditable. Their British friends most graciously made it possible for them to observe Kossovo Day in Great Britain - a tribute, of course, to the heroism of the Serbs, but also a proof of the great interest of the British public in the Serbian people and of an increasing appreciation of their cause. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Serbian Fairy Tales Once upon a time a bear married a woman, and they had one son. When the boy was yet a little fellow he begged very hard to be allowed to leave the bear's cave, and to go out into the world to see what was in it. His father, the Bear, however, would not consent to this, saying, You are too young yet, and not strong enough. In the world there are multitudes of wicked beasts called men, who will kill you. So the boy was quieted for a While, and remained in the cave. But, after some time, the boy prayed so earnestly that the Bear, his father, would let him go into the world, that the Bear brought him into the wood, and showed him a beech-tree, saying, If you can pull up that beech by the roots, I will let you go; but if you cannot, then this is a proof that you are still too weak, and must remain with me. The boy tried to pull up the tree, but, after long trying, had to give it up, and go home again to the cave. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heroic Serbians: An Appeal for Help The Byzantine Empire was reduced to Constantinople and its environs, and the Turkish tide approached the very heart of the Serbian Empire I quote from V. R. Savid's The Reconstruction of South Eastern Europe) The decisive battle was at hand. The Turks, who found the Serbs a most stubborn enemy, made overtures, begging them to open them the gate of Central Europe. The Serbian nation and its rulers were sorely tempted. They knew that their forces were too small to resist the swollen Turkish flood. No help was forthcoming from any other quarter. Europe, divided and terrified, looked mute and motionless upon the unequal struggle. Should the Serbs betray their noble mission as the champions of Christendom No and Never! The Serbian songs say that the Tsar Lazar received a letter from the Virgin Mother asking him which Kingdom he preferred, the Kingdom of Heaven or the Kingdom of the Earth. Tsar Lazar and all his nation chose the Heavenly Kingdom. So in 1914 the Serbians again chose the path of Right paved as it is with broken homes, and de'solated lands, murdered people, and women shamed and slain by German and Austrian lust. The gallant nation might have made easy terms with Germany and Austria and avoided war. The Central Europe Powers wanted a clear run to Constantinople, to Salonica, and a Balkancontrol. The Serbians might have made a big commercial bargain but they would not sell their souls. As on the Day of Kossovo they fought for the preservation of Christain Europe, so in 1914 they fought for their own honour and to uphold their undertakings to the peace-loving nations of the world. The historical parallel is there. The Serbians proved the pillar of the Balkans five hundred years ago as in this vast war. For so far as this war is concerned, the proverb is thoroughly typical of the bravery and stubborn self-reliance with which they have held their own for the past seven months. When war first broke out, those of us who were interested in Serbia and the Balkans felt it almost necessary to apologize for the importance of the south-eastern front and Serbia's share in the war. At first we were, naturally enough, engrossed with the western theatre of war, where our own gallant tr00ps are fighting; and many of us were apt to forget that besides Belgium, which has suffered so terribly or.
