Book excerpt: Intended as a text for the postgraduate students of statistics, this well-written book gives a complete coverage of Estimation theory and Hypothesis testing, in an easy-to-understand style. It is the outcome of the authors’ teaching experience over the years. The text discusses absolutely continuous distributions and random sample which are the basic concepts on which Statistical Inference is built up, with examples that give a clear idea as to what a random sample is and how to draw one such sample from a distribution in real-life situations. It also discusses maximum-likelihood method of estimation, Neyman’s shortest confidence interval, classical and Bayesian approach. The difference between statistical inference and statistical decision theory is explained with plenty of illustrations that help students obtain the necessary results from the theory of probability and distributions, used in inference.

Book Probability and Statistical Inference

Download or read book Probability and Statistical Inference written by Miltiadis C. Mavrakakis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-28 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Statistical Inference: From Basic Principles to Advanced Models covers aspects of probability, distribution theory, and inference that are fundamental to a proper understanding of data analysis and statistical modelling. It presents these topics in an accessible manner without sacrificing mathematical rigour, bridging the gap between the many excellent introductory books and the more advanced, graduate-level texts. The book introduces and explores techniques that are relevant to modern practitioners, while being respectful to the history of statistical inference. It seeks to provide a thorough grounding in both the theory and application of statistics, with even the more abstract parts placed in the context of a practical setting. Features: •Complete introduction to mathematical probability, random variables, and distribution theory. •Concise but broad account of statistical modelling, covering topics such as generalised linear models, survival analysis, time series, and random processes. •Extensive discussion of the key concepts in classical statistics (point estimation, interval estimation, hypothesis testing) and the main techniques in likelihood-based inference. •Detailed introduction to Bayesian statistics and associated topics. •Practical illustration of some of the main computational methods used in modern statistical inference (simulation, boostrap, MCMC). This book is for students who have already completed a first course in probability and statistics, and now wish to deepen and broaden their understanding of the subject. It can serve as a foundation for advanced undergraduate or postgraduate courses. Our aim is to challenge and excite the more mathematically able students, while providing explanations of statistical concepts that are more detailed and approachable than those in advanced texts. This book is also useful for data scientists, researchers, and other applied practitioners who want to understand the theory behind the statistical methods used in their fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an approximate sequential method of interval estimation suitable for hypothesis testing in current research in artificial intelligence, a study of its properties, and a method of choosing parameter values to maximize its effectiveness. Relationships were found between the parameters of the procedure and its significant properties, including the probabilities of the two types of error and the expected number of samples required by the process. Several sets of parameters were chosen. (Author).

Book Robust and Distributed Hypothesis Testing

Download or read book Robust and Distributed Hypothesis Testing written by Gökhan Gül and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book generalizes and extends the available theory in robust and decentralized hypothesis testing. In particular, it presents a robust test for modeling errors which is independent from the assumptions that a sufficiently large number of samples is available, and that the distance is the KL-divergence. Here, the distance can be chosen from a much general model, which includes the KL-divergence as a very special case. This is then extended by various means. A minimax robust test that is robust against both outliers as well as modeling errors is presented. Minimax robustness properties of the given tests are also explicitly proven for fixed sample size and sequential probability ratio tests. The theory of robust detection is extended to robust estimation and the theory of robust distributed detection is extended to classes of distributions, which are not necessarily stochastically bounded. It is shown that the quantization functions for the decision rules can also be chosen as non-monotone. Finally, the book describes the derivation of theoretical bounds in minimax decentralized hypothesis testing, which have not yet been known. As a timely report on the state-of-the-art in robust hypothesis testing, this book is mainly intended for postgraduates and researchers in the field of electrical and electronic engineering, statistics and applied probability. Moreover, it may be of interest for students and researchers working in the field of classification, pattern recognition and cognitive radio.

Book Statistical Hypothesis Testing in Context Volume 52

Download or read book Statistical Hypothesis Testing in Context Volume 52 written by Michael P. Fay and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fay and Brittain present statistical hypothesis testing and compatible confidence intervals, focusing on application and proper interpretation. The emphasis is on equipping applied statisticians with enough tools - and advice on choosing among them - to find reasonable methods for almost any problem and enough theory to tackle new problems by modifying existing methods. After covering the basic mathematical theory and scientific principles, tests and confidence intervals are developed for specific types of data. Essential methods for applications are covered, such as general procedures for creating tests (e.g., likelihood ratio, bootstrap, permutation, testing from models), adjustments for multiple testing, clustering, stratification, causality, censoring, missing data, group sequential tests, and non-inferiority tests. New methods developed by the authors are included throughout, such as melded confidence intervals for comparing two samples and confidence intervals associated with Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests and Kaplan-Meier estimates. Examples, exercises, and the R package asht support practical use.

Book Tables for the Use of Range and Studentized Range in Tests of Hypotheses

Download or read book Tables for the Use of Range and Studentized Range in Tests of Hypotheses written by H. Leon Harter and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-10-27 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion volume to the authors' previous well-received work, the CRC Handbook of Tables for the Use of Order Statistics in Estimation, this handbook discusses testing whether a hypothesis is true or false. Together, these volumes are your complete reference to theory and important tables relating to order statistics and their applications. Once a researcher completes an experiment, the resulting data is assumed to have come from a normal distribution with its mean and variance unknown. The researcher is then presented with a hypothesis testing problem. The use of order statistics and related functions offers a simple, powerful, and interesting approach to solving this problem. This volume presents an introduction to the use of order statistics and explains the various problems and their applications. The role of order statistics in solving these problems is examined, several important statistics are introduced, and their use in addressing testing of hypothesis problems is highlighted. The book also includes numerous tables that facilitate the methods of hypothesis testing using order statistics. Examples are given of the use of these tables in multiple comparison tests, with attention to error rates and sample sizes, and in the analog range of analysis of variance.
