Book excerpt: The Book of Hosea is generally considered one of the oldest surviving books of the Hebrew Scriptures, with most scholars dating it to before the Torah was written, or at least heavily redacted in the time of King Josiah. Most scholars accept that Hosea was written by a prophet called Hosea between 760 and 720 BC, who was most likely from the region of Ephraim, in central modern Israel and the Palestinian West Bank. His world was very different from the later Kingdom of Judea that emerged in the 2nd-century BC, as the Israelites of his time were still polytheistic, worshiping the Canaanite Elohim, as well as statues of Iaw (Masoretic Yahweh), the God the Jews and Samaritans would later worship. In the aftermath of their defeat in the Syro-Ephraimite War, many Israelites appear to have returned to worshiping the ancient Canaanite gods, implying they felt abandoned by El during the war. Hosea claimed that they were not worshiping El, but were worshiping the 'calf of Samaria,' which, archaeologically speaking, is Iaw. Several artifacts have been found dating to the era that depict Iaw as a calf, and include phrases written in Canaanite (Paleo-Hebrew) such as 'Yahweh of Samaria,' and 'Yahweh of the Teman.' Most of these artifacts have been found in the Sinai Peninsula at Kuntillet Ajrud, along the ancient Judean-Egyptian frontier, and are dated to 800 BC. These artifacts also list Yahweh along with several ancient Canaanite gods, including El (God), Asherah, and Ba'al (Lord). The Book of Hosea also refers to the Israelites worshiping gods other than El, which is the main cause of his anger with his people. He repeatedly refers to the Israelites worshiping the Lord (Ba'al), or Lords (Ba'alim), which he also identified as having established the sabbath, meaning the Lords in question were the Elohim, who established the sabbath after creating the world in the first six 'days' in Genesis chapter 1. As the current version of the Torah is accepted as having been compiled at the time of King Josiah, shortly before the fall of Judea. Hosea's writing proves that there were at least two copies in circulation in his time, the version he was referencing, and the Elohist version that those worshiping the Lords were using. These two Torahs are accepted as having been harmonized into the current version before the end of Josiah's time, resulting in the two creation stories and other duplicated stories that have conflicting details.

An English translation by the author is provided alongside its Hebrew original as found in Biblia Hebreaica. The Septuagint text studied is the edition prepared by Ziegler. The main purpose of the monograph is not to discover evidences which could be valuable for reconstructing the original Hebrew text of these books, but to read the LXX as a Greek document of its own, not merely as a translation. Much attention has been directed to a whole range of linguistic issues relating to the Greek and Hebrew grammar and lexicography. Ancient fragments found in the Judaean Desert and Qumran caves of these books in Hebrew and Greek have also been looked at. The book of Hosea has been published in the series La Bible dâe(tm)Alexandrie, but not that of Micah yet. Unlike this series we have paid only minimum attention to documents such as patristic commentaries from which one can learn how the LXX was interpreted without reference to its Semitic original.

Tully offers the first study of the Peshitta conducted via insights and methods from the discipline of Translation Studies. Every translator leaves residue of his or her interference in the course of the translation process. This investigation analyzes that interference (seen in the form of translation shifts), categorizes it, and draws conclusions with implications for textual criticism, Translation Studies, historical reconstruction, and the history of interpretation. Eric Tully argues that the Peshitta was translated from a Hebrew text similar to the Masoretic Text (but not identical to it) and was also influenced by readings from the Greek Septuagint. The study concludes with a socio-historical profile of the translator. Just as an ancient person makes one kind of ceramic jug or bronze incense stand and not another, the translation is a literary artifact in which the translator has crafted a text that reflects his or her own values and technique.

Developments at Yale are set against the wider background of changing American attitudes toward the Near East, as well as evolving ideas about the role of the academy and its curriculum in educating undergraduate and graduate students. In the case of the Near East, this also involves considering how several of its disciplines made the transition from biblically motivated enterprises to secular fields of study. Yale has notable firsts to her credit: the first American professional program in Arabic and Sanskrit; the first American learned society and periodical devoted to Oriental subjects; the first American research institutes in Jerusalem and Baghdad; the first American university to have endowed funds to establish and curate one of the world's largest collections of cuneiform tablets and cylinder seals.
