Book Remember the Alamo

Download or read book Remember the Alamo written by Carl S. Adams and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As America suffered the internal upheaval of the Vietnam War era, Carl Adams and thousands of other young men volunteered to serve their country in wartime. Trained as sentry dog handlers, many, together with their devoted German shepherd dogs, were assigned to guard American air bases against the continual threat of Vietcong attack. These heroic K9 teams did their jobs well: they share credit for saving more than 10,000 American lives during the war. Nearly all the dog handlers returned to the United States after their tours of duty. The dogs, despite their valorous service, were classified as "surplus equipment" at the war's end, and were destroyed outright or consigned to a doubtful fate when they were turned over to the Army of South Vietnam. Here is the story of K9, seen firsthand through the eyes of a nineteen-year-old who never chanted "Hell no -- we won't go!" Remember the Alamo has been selected as an information resource for a planned documentary on the modern military working dog. A high school student working on an assignment asked me, "Why do you think we lost the Vietnam War?" I replied: "Imagine you're on the football team. You're scheduled to play a team from another conference. Many of your fellow students don't want the game played, so they march in protest and refuse to participate. When you get to the other team's stadium, you find out the game will be played with two sets of rules -- one for your side and another for your opponents. They don't even wear uniforms, so it's impossible to tell them apart from their fans in the stands.

Book The Contributions of the American Military Working Dog in Vietnam

Download or read book The Contributions of the American Military Working Dog in Vietnam written by Mary Kathleen Murray and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than eleven hundred dogs served in Vietnam as part of the United States Armed Forces. Working alongside members of all branches of service, these canine soldiers filled vital roles in the campaign in Southeast Asia. Despite their numbers and heroics, the history of the dogs and the servicemen who worked with them is relatively unknown, even among the dog handlers themselves. Even before American troops were formally committed in Vietnam, military advisors to the region recognized the usefulness and importance of military working dogs. As early as 1960 American scout and sentry dogs were introduced in South Vietnam to assist the Army of the Republic of Vietnam in protecting their military installations as well as in searching for the Vietcong and soldiers of the North Vietnamese Army. Utilizing dogs that had been left behind by the French, U.S. Air Force personnel established the Army Republic of Vietnam dog program.

Book The Contributions of the American Military Working Dog in Vietnam

Download or read book The Contributions of the American Military Working Dog in Vietnam written by Mary Kathleen Murray and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the contributions of the military working dogs in Vietnam to determine their significance to the United States' war effort. There is limited written history concerning the use of the military working dogs in Vietnam. The methods and procedures employed in this study data relied extensively on personal military after action reports and histories (written and oral) to compile a historical account of the military working dog in Vietnam. The study found that when correctly employed, these animals made significant contributions to the United States' war effort in terms of the saving of lives and in the protection of military resources. However, these contributions could not be quantified; therefore, assumptions were made as to the effectiveness of the animals. Despite their effectiveness, the scout, tracker, and mine/tunnel dog programs were disbanded at the conclusion of the Vietnam War. This practice of disbanding military working dog programs at the conclusion of conflict is one that has been practiced since World War II. Each subsequent war has necessitated the rebuilding of military working dog programs. Today, only the sentry dogs are still active, having been joined by the relatively new narcotic detection dogs. Future conflicts may necessitate rebuilding the scout, tracker, and mine/tunnel dog programs.

Book excerpt: For many of us, the only way we meet "dangerous" dogs is through news reports about vicious attacks, and films and TV shows that feature out-of-control versions of man's best friend. But there's more to the Bad Dog's story than sensational headlines and movie beasts. A deeper look at these representations reveals a villain much closer to home. This book takes the reader on a rich journey through depictions of violent dogs in popular media. It explores how press accounts and screen stories transform canines into bloodthirsty hunters, rabies-infested strays, ferocious fighters, rogue law enforcement partners and diabolical pets, all adding up to a frightening picture of our usually beloved companions. But, when media tells the dangerous dog's story, it is often with a deep connection to the person on the other end of the leash.

Book Air Base Defense In The Republic Of Vietnam 1961 1973 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Air Base Defense In The Republic Of Vietnam 1961 1973 Illustrated Edition written by Lt.-Colonel Roger P. Fox and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 78 photos and 16 maps / charts This book explores the unique problem of defending air bases during the Vietnam War. It centers on the primary efforts of the United States Air Force and allied air units to defend 10 key air bases within the Republic of Vietnam. Bien Hoa, on 1 November 1964, was the first base to be attacked and until the cease-fire in January 1973, these bases suffered a total of 475 attacks. Although there were initial deficiencies in staff support for base defense in such key areas as intelligence, motor vehicles, weapons procurement and maintenance, communications, and civil engineering, significant improvements had been made by the end of the Air Force’s part in the war. The author, Lt. Col. Roger P. Fox, USAF (Ret.), wrote this volume while assigned to the Office of Air Force History. He brings judgments to his research based on his personal experience as a base security officer during the conflict. Thus, early on the morning of 4 December 1966, he rallied Air Force and South Vietnamese security forces to repel an enemy attempt to penetrate Tan Son Nhut Air Base, the center of Air Force operations in South Vietnam. For his gallantry in action on this occasion, he was awarded the Silver Star. This personal experience formed a foundation upon which he developed a keen insight into exploring the entire spectrum of air base defense, and upon which he has built a strong case for testing future plans and operations.
