Book The Invention of the Jewish People

Download or read book The Invention of the Jewish People written by Shlomo Sand and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical tour de force that demolishes the myths and taboos that have surrounded Jewish and Israeli history, The Invention of the Jewish People offers a new account of both that demands to be read and reckoned with. Was there really a forced exile in the first century, at the hands of the Romans? Should we regard the Jewish people, throughout two millennia, as both a distinct ethnic group and a putative nation—returned at last to its Biblical homeland? Shlomo Sand argues that most Jews actually descend from converts, whose native lands were scattered far across the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The formation of a Jewish people and then a Jewish nation out of these disparate groups could only take place under the sway of a new historiography, developing in response to the rise of nationalism throughout Europe. Beneath the biblical back fill of the nineteenth-century historians, and the twentieth-century intellectuals who replaced rabbis as the architects of Jewish identity, The Invention of the Jewish People uncovers a new narrative of Israel’s formation, and proposes a bold analysis of nationalism that accounts for the old myths. After a long stay on Israel’s bestseller list, and winning the coveted Aujourd’hui Award in France, The Invention of the Jewish People is finally available in English. The central importance of the conflict in the Middle East ensures that Sand’s arguments will reverberate well beyond the historians and politicians that he takes to task. Without an adequate understanding of Israel’s past, capable of superseding today’s opposing views, diplomatic solutions are likely to remain elusive. In this iconoclastic work of history, Shlomo Sand provides the intellectual foundations for a new vision of Israel’s future.

Book Semitic Nations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Semitic Nations Classic Reprint written by D. Chwolson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semitic Nations In studying the histories of different nations and reflecting upon their mental products, their endeavors, aims and ideals, the question arises: Why has this or that nation acted so and so and not otherwise, why has it pursued such and such aims, why has it brought forth such and such mental products, while another nation acted altogether differently, strived after something altogether different, and produced something altogether different. Wherein lie the causes of these different and often opposite tendencies? Accident this cannot be, for there are no accidents. All that comes to pass, is a necessary result of a foregoing cause. Shortsightedness alone sees the reign of chance in small and, at times, even in great events. Let us, who occupy ourselves with historical studies, t.e. with the natural history of spiritual man, follow the example of natural historians, who inquire after the causes of every phenomenon, and hence arrive at the establishment of general laws, of which these phenomena are to be regarded as necessary results. Contemplating thus more closely upon the varied phenomena in the history of nations, we too, perhaps, may succeed in discovering some general laws pertaining to their varied characters, of which these historical phenomena are to be regarded as their necessary results. Wherein then lie the causes and motives of those heterogeneous actions and endeavors of the nations? Some say, in Religion; this, they say, has put a definite stamp upon the character of every nation, and guided its actions. But this is not true, for two reasons. Book Semitic Languages

Download or read book Semitic Languages written by Edward Lipiński and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comparative grammar of the Semitic languages, by H. Zimmern, was published a hundred years ago and the last original work of this kind was issued in Russian in 1972 by B.M. Grande. The present grammar, designed to come out in the centenary of the completion of Zimmern's work, fills thus a gap. Besides, it is based on both classical and modern Semitic languages, it takes new material of these last decades into account, and situates the Semitic languages in the wider context of Afro-Asiatic. The introduction briefly presents the languages in question. The main parts of the work are devoted to phonology, morphology, and syntax, with elaborate charts and diagrams. Then follows a discussion of fundamental questions related to lexicographical analysis. The study is supplemented by a glossary of linguistic terms used in Semitics, by a selective bibliography, by a general index, and by an index of words and forms. The book is the result of twenty-five years of research and teaching in comparative Semitic grammar.

Book The New Anti Semitism

Download or read book The New Anti Semitism written by Phyllis Chesler and published by Gefen Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dangerous worldwide coalition of Islamic terrorists, well-intentioned but misinformed students, right-wing fascists, left-wing ideologues, academics, feminists, European politicians, journalists, and international human rights organisations have joined together to again scapegoat the Jews and the Jewish state for crimes they did not commit and for whatever ails the world. In this intensely passionate and compelling book, the best-selling and prize-winning Jewish feminist author Dr Phyllis Chesler demonstrates how old-fashioned anti-Semitism -- now often seen in the form of anti-Zionism -- has become fashionable and even politically correct, and how this plague threatens the Jews of the world, Israel, America, and Western civilization. The 2003 edition of this book was a pioneering work that has stood the test of time. This new edition updates, expands, and strengthens the original analysis and also has a new introduction, resource section, and the answers to the twenty most frequently asked questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scholarly quest to answer the question of Jewish origins The Jews have one of the longest continuously recorded histories of any people in the world, but what do we actually know about their origins? While many think the answer to this question can be found in the Bible, others look to archaeology or genetics. Some skeptics have even sought to debunk the very idea that the Jews have a common origin. Steven Weitzman takes a learned and lively look at what we know—or think we know—about where the Jews came from, when they arose, and how they came to be. He sheds new light on the assumptions and biases of those seeking answers—and the religious and political agendas that have made finding answers so elusive. Introducing many approaches and theories, The Origin of the Jews brings needed clarity and historical context to this enduring and divisive topic.
