Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to illustrate the magnificence of the fabless semiconductor ecosystem, and to give credit where credit is due. We trace the history of the semiconductor industry from both a technical and business perspective. We argue that the development of the fabless business model was a key enabler of the growth in semiconductors since the mid-1980s. Because business models, as much as the technology, are what keep us thrilled with new gadgets year after year, we focus on the evolution of the electronics business. We also invited key players in the industry to contribute chapters. These "In Their Own Words" chapters allow the heavyweights of the industry to tell their corporate history for themselves, focusing on the industry developments (both in technology and business models) that made them successful, and how they in turn drive the further evolution of the semiconductor industry.

Book Predicting Semiconductor Business Trends After Moore s Law

Download or read book Predicting Semiconductor Business Trends After Moore s Law written by Walden Rhines and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The semiconductor industry exhibited life cycles that were longer than the disk drive industry but had the same free market characteristics. Over time this unfettered competition followed trends in a worldwide market that could be quantified and used to predict the future. Over the past forty years or more, I've collected data and made presentations showing how the actual economics and technology of the semiconductor industry can be used to predict its future direction and magnitude. This book is built upon excerpts of presentations made during the last thirty years that analyze the business and technology of the semiconductor industry. In most cases, the figures in the book are copies of the original slides as they were presented during one or more of those presentations. In general, they show how predictable the semiconductor industry has been. They should also provide insight into the future of the industry.

Book Competitive Edge

Download or read book Competitive Edge written by Daniel I. Okimoto and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1970s, Japan supplanted the United States as the world leader in steel production, automobile manufacturing, and consumer electronics. Are the Japanese poised to repeat these successes in the semiconductor industry? This question has vast potential significance, because semiconductor technology holds the key to competitiveness in high technology, one of America's last bastions of industrial supremacy. This book, the product of years of joint research by a multidisciplinary team of American and Japanese scholars, analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of each country's semiconductor industry with reference to three major areas: technological innovation; the role of government, not only in specific policies directed toward the semiconductor industry, but also in the broader context of industrial policy, government-business relations, and the two political systems; and the influence of financial institutions, ties between banks and businesses, and corporate financing. The book provides, in short, a broad yet in-depth analysis of emerging industrial competition in high technology between the world's two largest market economies.

Book Semiconductor Business in the 4th Industrial Revolution Era

Download or read book Semiconductor Business in the 4th Industrial Revolution Era written by Young (Hwa) Kwon and published by 펜립. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, the semiconductor industry in Korea has been gaining global attention. In the past, it was difficult for Korea to start semiconductor businesses, which was almost barren. Up until 40 years ago, almost all conditions, including the necessary manpower, experience and industrial ecosystem as well as technology, to do a semiconductor business were at their worst. Nevertheless, as a result of many people\'s bloody efforts, Korea has now emerged as one of the top powerhouses in memory semiconductors. It\'s really amazing and I can say it\'s almost a miracle. I think this is a good example not only for many countries, but also for many companies, and this is the reason why many people are interested in learning the success stories of Korean semiconductor industry. However, Korea is still not the best power in the semiconductor industry. This is because the market for system semiconductors is about twice as large as that of memory semiconductors, and Korea is still very weak in this sector. The memory semiconductor sector was able to grow significantly thanks to bold investments and bleeding efforts by large companies, but many companies have been negligent in the system semiconductor sector due to various reasons. Moreover, with various support from the Chinese government, Chinese semiconductor companies are not only growing brilliantly, but also pose a great threat to Korean semiconductor companies. This is because China is growing rapidly in the system semiconductor field and they are gradually speeding up their pursuit in the memory semiconductor field. What\'s fortunate is that Korea has recently been gradually continuing the growth in the system semiconductor sector. Of course, there is still a long way to go, but if we can concentrate on our efforts just like the memory semiconductor field, I believe that the system semiconductor sector will have a bright future. We are now facing a turbulent era called the 4th Industrial Revolution. Therefore, much of our lives are expected to be very different from what we have been doing. And as the 4th industrial revolution progresses slowly, the demand for semiconductors is gradually growing. For example, new markets are opening up little by little such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT (Internet of Things), Autonomous car, and Smart industry. Therefore, it can be said that the outlook for the semiconductor industry is brighter than ever. Furthermore, it is hard to expect the development of the 4th industry without the continuous development of semiconductor technology. As such, semiconductor technology can be said to be an essential driving force to lead 4th industry. Korean economy is now heavily dependent on the semiconductor industry. Since the semiconductor industry accounts for about 20% of the Korean economy, Korean economy is difficult without the growth of the semiconductor industry. Therefore, the government has recently set up various support policies to foster the semiconductor industry. The main characteristic of the semiconductor market these days is that capital is gradually playing an important role in the growth of companies. This is because it creates competitiveness in the market depending on how much capital can be invested in scaling technology ahead of other companies. But the problem is that the cost of investment in scaling technology is increasing astronomically. As a result, companies with capital will invest more capital in scaling technology to gain a market leadership as well as competitiveness, while companies with no capital will be forced to flee the market further. In addition, it tends to increase in the number of companies that is acquired, or go bankrupt by other companies with capital. Meanwhile, most of the existing semiconductor related books focused on technology. I think that it has resulted in people staying away from the semiconductor industry. In fact, for ordinary people who know little about semiconductors, semiconductor technology has many parts that are difficult to understand from the terminology itself. Therefore, this book tried to explain the contents as easy as possible by excluding technical fields, so that even ordinary people could easily understand the industry. Of course, technology is an important part of the semiconductor industry because technology development is leading the industry, but a business is also a factor that cannot be ignored. No matter how good the technology is, the semiconductor industry cannot be maintained unless the transaction is made as a business. Therefore, this book tried not to focus on technology, but to look at the semiconductor market thoroughly from a business perspective. For reference, I worked for a semiconductor related company for about 10 years in the past and received a doctorate in a semiconductor business. I also published 20 papers on a semiconductor business. In this process, I was able to gain deep knowledge about a semiconductor business. However, I wrote the book with the thought that publishing a book would give more people a chance to read because there was a limit as a paper. Therefore, the contents of the book were organized based on the business status of major semiconductor companies and the overall situation of the semiconductor industry. I hope that it will help employees in the semiconductor field, students studying in the semiconductor field, and people interested in the semiconductor field understand the semiconductor business. Finally, in the appendix, 2 interviews were conducted. I think readers will be able to feel the vivid voices of the site in the semiconductor business because it was conducted targeting people who are working in the field of the semiconductor industry.

Book Mismanaged Trade

Download or read book Mismanaged Trade written by Kenneth Flamm and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The semiconductor industry is at the forefront of current tensions over international trade and investment in high technology industries. This book traces the struggle between U.S. and Japanese semiconductor producers from its origins in the 1950s to the novel experiment with "managed trade" embodied in the U.S.-Japan Semiconductor Trade Arrangements of 1986, and the current debate over continuation of elements of that agreement. Flamm provides a thorough analysis of this experiment and its consequences for U.S. semiconductor producers and users, and presents extensive discussion of patterns of competition within the semiconductor industry. Using a wealth of new data, he argues that a fundamentally new trade regime for high technology industries is needed to escape from the present impasse. He lays out the alternatives, from laissez-faire to managed trade, and argues strongly for a new set of international ground rules to regulate acceptable behavior by government and firms in high-tech industries. Flamm's detailed analysis of competition within the semiconductor industry will be of great value to those interested in the industrial organization of high-technology industries, as well as those concerned with trade and technology policy, international competition, and Japanese industrial policies.

Book Introduction to Quality Management in the Semiconductor Industry

Download or read book Introduction to Quality Management in the Semiconductor Industry written by Juergen Wittmann and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Students' Version is a "black and white" only version with a slightly reduced number of pages as compared to the full version of this text book. The primary purpose of our book is to provide the "fast lane" to practical quality engineering and management in the semi-conductor industries. In line with this objective, this book is meant to be more a guide to practical quality engineering and management, rather than a scientific treatise. Although it has been written for the semiconductor technology community, it goes without saying that it is useful for almost all other industrial areas, since in a way semiconductor technology (in particular micro-electronics) is a good model case how 100% stringent QM can be implemented in practice.

Book Chips and Change

Download or read book Chips and Change written by Clair Brown and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the chip industry has responded to a series of crises over the past twenty-five years, often reinventing itself and shifting the basis for global competitive advantage. For decades the semiconductor industry has been a driver of global economic growth and social change. Semiconductors, particularly the microchips essential to most electronic devices, have transformed computing, communications, entertainment, and industry. In Chips and Change, Clair Brown and Greg Linden trace the industry over more than twenty years through eight technical and competitive crises that forced it to adapt in order to continue its exponential rate of improved chip performance. The industry's changes have in turn shifted the basis on which firms hold or gain global competitive advantage. These eight interrelated crises do not have tidy beginnings and ends. Most, in fact, are still ongoing, often in altered form. The U.S. semiconductor industry's fear that it would be overtaken by Japan in the 1980s, for example, foreshadows current concerns over the new global competitors China and India. The intersecting crises of rising costs for both design and manufacturing are compounded by consumer pressure for lower prices. Other crises discussed in the book include the industry's steady march toward the limits of physics, the fierce competition that keeps its profits modest even as development costs soar, and the global search for engineering talent. Other high-tech industries face crises of their own, and the semiconductor industry has much to teach about how industries are transformed in response to such powerful forces as technological change, shifting product markets, and globalization. Chips and Change also offers insights into how chip firms have developed, defended, and, in some cases, lost global competitive advantage.
