Book The Selkirk Settlers in Real Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Selkirk Settlers in Real Life Classic Reprint written by R. G. Macbeth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selkirk Settlers in Real Life In common with others who have been interested in, and connected with, the development of the territories formerly under the administration of the Hudson Bay Company, I heard with much pleasure of the intention of my friend, the Rev. R. G. MacBeth, M.A., to place on record an account of the genesis and development of the Selkirk Settlement in the Red River Valley. The longer such a work is postponed the more difficult must it be to carry out, and it would be a thousand pities if a description of the pioneer attempts at colonization in the great North-West were not given to the world. This is neither the time nor the place to enter upon a discussion of the motives which influenced Lord Selkirk in his enterprise. He may have been somewhat in advance of the times in which he lived, but he had the courage of his convictions, and his efforts deserve the fullest recognition from those who believe in the great future in store for Western Canada. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Selkirk's Work in Canada Jeffrey and Clark, Ferguson, Walter Scott and Dugald Stewart. The subsequent loyalty of triends bears positive testimony to mutual faith and esteem. Adversaries of a later date could refer to the 'literary judges' of the Edinburgh reviews as Selkirk's staunchest allies.1 There is little contem porary evidence, however, that Thomas Douglas exercised a commanding influence over 'the Club'. {chis aim at this time was the law 2 and though he seems to have entered with enthusiasm into the literary and humanitarian spirit of 'the Club', he was by no means carried away by the deluge of revolutionary thought. Much, though by no means all, of this reserve may be attributed to extreme youth and lack of prospective influence; much was undoubtedly due to a certain shyness, an excessive modesty, which can be traced in many curious ways even down to the period of Selkirk's greatest activity. Book Minnesota and Its Resources

Download or read book Minnesota and Its Resources written by J. Wesley Bond and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota and Its Resources: To Which Are Appended Camp-Fire Sketches, or Notes of a Trip From St. Paul to Pembina and Selkirk Settlement on the Red River of the North This work is offered as a brief general view of Minnesota, as it existed prior to its organization as a territorial government in 1849, and "as it is" at the present time. As a guide to the immigrant, and the tourist in search of general information and pleasure, it is believed to contain much valuable and interesting knowledge. The facts and statements contained in this work will be found particularly correct, and it is thought will meet the desire of the community throughout the states - at least that part of it intending to remove hither, who wish a reliable work for reference and information concerning the many interesting topics pertaining to this territory. The style, though somewhat glowing, is not in the least overdrawn. Those familiar with the country will admit, on a perusal, that the half has not been told. To present a plain and truthful picture has been my only aim; and if, in any instance, I have erred, an absorbing interest in the cause of Minnesota must offer sufficient atonement for such error. The matter contained in the "Camp-Fire Sketches," and several other chapters, is entirely original. I have also made valuable selections from the writings of David Dale Owen, United States geologist; Rev. E. D. Neill, of St. Paul; ex- Governor Ramsey, and several others of considerable repute. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rebellion: A Story of the Red River Uprising At the period of the Red River Rebellion there was not a line of railway beyond Thunder Bay, near which the two thriving cities of Fort William and Port Arthur now stand. Beyond that it was a case of boat and portage in summer, and dog trains and snowshoes in winter. For instance, it took Wolseley's troops, with their heavy equipment, a number of weeks to traverse from Thunder Bay to Fort Garry, a distance now accomplished in a little over twelve hours by rail. And of Winnipeg itself what shall be said? The little Selkirk settlement has become a great and an abounding city, with all the airs of a metropolis, and an illimitable future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red River Colony: A Chronicle of the Beginnings of Manitoba A boat was swung out, speedily manned, and headed for the shelving beach of St Mary's Isle. Here, as Captain Paul Jones knew, dwelt one of the chief noblemen of the south of Scotland. The vine-clad, rambling mansion of the fourth Earl of Selkirk was just behind the fringe of trees skirting the shore. According to the official report of this descent upon St Mary's Isle, it was the captain's intention to capture Selkirk, drag him on board the Ranger, and carry him as a hostage to some harbour in France. But it is possible that there was another and more personal object. Paul Jones, it is said, believed that he was a natural son of the Scottish nobleman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada West: Useful Information for Settlers The agricultural settlement of the Province, aside from the Selkirk colony already referred to, may be said to have com menced when Manitoba was first linked up with the outside world by means of the Canadian Pacific Railway, in the early eighties of the last century. Hardy pioneers had been flocking into the country even in advance of the railways, and, driving their yokes of oxen, with their wives, children and worldly pos sessions loaded on waggon or Red River cart, they plodded day after day into the wilderness, seeking the most favourable loca tion to establish a home. The land they received free from the Government on condition that they carried out certain residence and improvement duties, but the lot of the early pioneer was by no means an easy one. The fertility of the soil was unbounded, but until settlement became somewhat general the ripening crops were frequently destroyed by early frosts, or the harvested grain was licked up by prairie fires which swept over the leagues of unbroken plain. The farm machinery of the time was crude and poorly adapted to prairie conditions, and the farmers them selves had little knowledge of the best practices to follow. Worse still, they had no competent advisers, as in those early days Government experiments in agriculture under prairie conditions had not been carried far enough to warrant definite conclusions. Railway services were expensive and inadequate; marketing facilities were undeveloped; the wonderful systems of grading and inspection which have since made Western Canada farm products the standard of excellence everywhere, had not yet been brought into existence. Book Selkirk s Island

Download or read book Selkirk s Island written by Diana Souhami and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alexander Selkirk was abandoned by his shipmates on the remote island of Juan Fernandez in 1704 he could not have know that he wouldn't see another human soul for four long years, could not have anticipated the lonely and fierce existence to which he had been condemned, nor could he have ever guessed that his plight - recreated in the form of Robinson Crusoe - would be immortalised by Daniel Defoe. In this startlingly original book, award-winning author Diana Souhami brings new life to this story, evoking the abandoned sailor's struggle with solitude, God and the savage new home into which he had been so brutally thrust.

Book excerpt: The Canadian prairies are often envisioned as dry, windswept fields; however, much of southern Manitoba is not arid plain but wet prairie, poorly drained land subject to frequent flooding. Shannon Stunden Bower brings to light the complexities of surface-water management in Manitoba, from early artificial drainage efforts to late-twentieth-century attempts at watershed management. She engages scholarship on the state, liberalism, and bioregionalism in order to probe the connections between human and environmental change in the wet prairie. This account of an overlooked aspect of the region’s environmental history reveals how the biophysical nature of southern Manitoba has been an important factor in the formation of Manitoba society and the provincial state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red River Settlement: Papers in the Canadian Archives Relating to the Pioneers Both Macdonell's party and Keveny's, it owill. Be seen, retired to Pembina for the winter of 1812. The party. Which crossed to Hudson's Bay in 1813 suffered severely through an epidemic of ship fever, and reached Hudson's Bay too late to proceed inland until the followmg summer. The list is given in No. 10. The winter was passed at Fort Churchill, so that when the first party of the 'churchill Settlers, ' as they were called, reached Red River, open hostilities had already broken out with the North West Company. Only fourteen new settlers came out by the Hudson's Bay ships in 1814. One of the Hudson's Bay servantsfjoined the number, and the party reached the Settle ment late in the autumn of that year. Although the number is specified in the Selkirk Papers and Macdonell adds some gen eral remarks upon the character of the. Men, there seems to be no official list of this last contingent of settlers to reach Red River before the dispersion of the settlement by the North West Com pany in the spring of 1815. It will be seen, therefore, that the lists numbered 5 and 7 give the names of the pioneers who reached Red River in 1812. The extract numbered 10, supplies the names of other settlers, as far as we know tnem at pre sent, who reached the Forks before 'the expulsion.'
