Book excerpt: Have you heard about The American Dream that states "Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each, according to their ability and achievement, regardless of their social class or circumstances of birth?" 244 years after independence, The American Dream still continues to inspire the nation, holds its people together, gets everyone pushing in the same direction and makes the country what it is today. Besides America, our neighbour, China has a "Chinese Dream," which promotes prosperity, collective effort and national glory. Even smaller countries like Qatar and New Zealand have also stated their national dreams. But what about India? Do we have a dream that can push us in the same direction and that can inspire you, me and a billion others? Yes, India had a dream in the past - a dream of an independent country, but that dream ended after we achieved it. What about now? Do we still have an Indian dream that can inspire us into action? Yes, there is a new kind of dream that has started emerging from every nook and corner across the nation. Inside The Self Made Indian Dream, you will discover what this new Indian dream is all about and how this new Indian dream is driving the new Indian middle class to achieve their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is increasingly possible for anyone regardless of their age, gender, caste, education or background.

Book excerpt: How does a mother and son heal from the most horrid human experience, an American Holocaust that everyone is convinced never existed. This is the story of how difficult it was for America to kill the Indian in me and how my mother maintained our traditional relations to healing our broken spirits. This is a story of how I recovered from the traumas inflicted in me since I was five years old and how I joined a national effort to share our healing with others. Working for thirty eight years as a Psychiatric Social Worker in one of the first Crisis Emergency Response Clinics serving Raza Survivors of the holocaust, and how I became a 'Social Justice Healer developing a diagnostic criteria for what our people suffer as Survivors. Book excerpt: An exploration into the curation of the self in Western civilization from Da Vinci to Kim Kardashian. In a technologically-saturated era where nearly everything can be effortlessly and digitally reproduced, we're all hungry to carve out our own unique personalities, our own bespoke personae, to stand out and be seen. As the forces of social media and capitalism collide, and individualism becomes more important than ever across a wide array of industries, "branding ourselves" or actively defining our selves for others has become the norm. Yet, this phenomenon is not new. In Self-Made, Tara Isabella Burton shows us how we arrived at this moment of fervent personal-branding. As attitudes towards religion, politics and society evolved, our sense of self did as well, moving from a collective to individual mindset. Through a series of chronological biographical essays on famous (and infamous) "self-creators" in the modern Western world, from the Renassiance to the Enlightenment to modern capitalism and finally to our present moment of mass media, Burton examines the theories and forces behind our never-ending need to curate ourselves. Through a vivid cast of characters and an engaging mix of cultural and historical commentary, we learn how the personal brand has come to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in Kevin Starr's passionate and ambitious cultural history of the Golden State focuses on the turn-of-the-century years and the emergence of Southern California as a regional culture in its own right. "How hauntingly beautiful, how replete with lost possibilities, seems that Southern California of two and three generations ago, now that a dramatically diferent society has emerged in its place," writes Starr. As he recreates the "lost California," Starr examines the rich variety of elements that figured in the growth of the Southern California way of life: the Spanish/Mexican roots, the fertile land, the Mediterranean-like climate, the special styles in architecture, the rise of Hollywood. He gives us a broad array of engaging (and often eccentric) characters: from Harrision Gray Otis to Helen Hunt Jackson to Cecil B. DeMille. Whether discussing the growth of winemaking or the burgeoning of reform movements, Starr keeps his central theme in sharp focus: how Californians defined their identity to themselves and to the nation.

Download or read book The Indian written by Jeffrey Bernhardt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeff has been telling lies since he cut down his fathers cherry tree. He obtained degrees in math and chemistry, which have served him well over the years in spinning plausible stories for many employers. For many years, he has designed and developed medical instruments, some of which worked. It has somehow just dawned on him that he could spin yarns for his own purposes. Jeff has three children and lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California with his wife and high schoolaged youngest daughter. The neighbors complain about his dogs and the racket he makes on every New Years Eve. Jeff lived through and participated in events of the period portrayed in this book but, as is usual of those who did, cannot remember much of it. However, the intentions, yearnings, and idealism of the period are crystal clear and as out of step with the larger social mores now as they were then. Details of the historical events have been chronicled by many in exquisite detail and are utilized extensively in this work. The extraordinary period depicted in this work spanning 1969 through 1972 is a greatly underappreciated and momentous point in American history and the place of America in the world. From the peak of affluence and power, many were able to pursue spiritual and political ideals, only to slam against the larger reality of a culture which fractured and came dangerously close to self-destruction.

Its main purpose is to motivate and encourage the reader, whoever and wherever they are, that it is possible to rise up, do better, and excel as a person. It is easy to get into the trap of daily painful existence, blaming circumstances, the environment, other people, and things around us for our negative outcomes in life. None of us love to remain poor or insignificant. We all want to achieve and attain status in life. We all love to excel, yet very few of us do. The book argueswith compelling stories and evidence from history, science, society, and academiathat human destiny, in its most crude form, is like a garden. When left alone, a garden only grows with useless weeds, but when good seeds are sown in it, the ground is well cultivated, the crops cared for, and the garden teeming lively with crops that feed us well. The author shares with the reader his personal experiences and those of scores of other people in the world to demonstrate the indomitable power of the human being to get better. Spiced with easy, witty poems and scores of true stories, the book convinces the reader of their power to excel. The book does this using sequential themes built around eight instructively captivating chapters as follows: 1. Leap forward and get better. 2. Use you power; you are more powerful than you think 3. Pursue excellence; it is your calling 4. Avoid mediocrity and all its roots 5. Accept that you are different 6. Dedicate yourself to service And when you do all these and you realize it is tough, 7. Take heart; the world seldom cheers excellence 8. Now do this and leap forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned philosopher of the mind, also known for his groundbreaking work on Buddhism and cognitive science, Evan Thompson combines the latest neuroscience research on sleep, dreaming, and meditation with Indian and Western philosophy of mind, casting new light on the self and its relation to the brain. Thompson shows how the self is a changing process, not a static thing. When we are awake we identify with our body, but if we let our mind wander or daydream, we project a mentally imagined self into the remembered past or anticipated future. As we fall asleep, the impression of being a bounded self distinct from the world dissolves, but the self reappears in the dream state. If we have a lucid dream, we no longer identify only with the self within the dream. Our sense of self now includes our dreaming self, the "I" as dreamer. Finally, as we meditate—either in the waking state or in a lucid dream—we can observe whatever images or thoughts arise and how we tend to identify with them as "me." We can also experience sheer awareness itself, distinct from the changing contents that make up our image of the self. Contemplative traditions say that we can learn to let go of the self, so that when we die we can witness its dissolution with equanimity. Thompson weaves together neuroscience, philosophy, and personal narrative to depict these transformations, adding uncommon depth to life's profound questions. Contemplative experience comes to illuminate scientific findings, and scientific evidence enriches the vast knowledge acquired by contemplatives.

Download or read book Self and Deception written by Roger T. Ames and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1996-07-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains essays by a range of distinguished philosophers on the problem of self-deception, or rather, self and deception. The work proceeds from the assumption that changing constructions of self within Western cultures, and alternative notions of self in other cultures requires that we rethink traditional strategies for explaining the phenomenon of self-deception. The concept of self is central to any sustained inquiry into self-deception, the pertinent issue being what sort of self is victim (or beneficiary) of self deception. Several of the authors here base their thinking on the model of "other-deception," and include discussion of the notions of double selves, multiple selves, and subsystems of the self, to address this troubling problem. Other authors argue that "other-deception" is not an adequate or reliable model to guide our thinking on this issue. The psychological and moral dimensions of self-deception generate a rich discussion, as do its epistemic implications. The concept of emotionality also receives sustained attention.

Book excerpt: Scattered across the globe are remarkable individuals variously called "outsiders," "obsessive visionaries," or "folk artists." These unique individuals and the environments they create are celebrated in "Self-Made Worlds." The works depicted in "Self-Made Worlds"--some presented for the first time--challenge long-standing ideas about what art is. From "Le Palais Id al," built in a small French village by the mailman Cheval, to the "Hubcap Ranch" by Litto Damonte of California, to Nek Chand's hundreds of human and animal sculptures made from waste and recycled materials and set in a massive landscaped rock garden in Northwest India, "Self-Made Worlds" is an international tour of some of the most remarkable manifestations of the idiosyncratic, eccentric glory of the human imagination.

Book The Dream of the Great American Novel

Download or read book The Dream of the Great American Novel written by Lawrence Buell and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Magisterial . . . make[s] you suddenly see new things in familiar books . . . brilliant analyses of a dozen or so front-runners in the Great American Novel sweepstakes.” —Michael Dirda, Virginia Quarterly Review The idea of “the great American novel” continues to thrive almost as vigorously as in its nineteenth-century heyday, defying more than 150 years of attempts to dismiss it as amateurish or obsolete. In this landmark book, the first in many years to take in the whole sweep of national fiction, Lawrence Buell reanimates this supposedly antiquated idea, demonstrating that its history is a key to the dynamics of national literature and national identity itself. The dream of the G.A.N., as Henry James nicknamed it, crystallized soon after the Civil War. In fresh, in-depth readings of selected contenders from the 1850s onward in conversation with hundreds of other novels, Buell delineates four “scripts” for G.A.N. candidates and their themes, illustrated by such titles as The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, Invisible Man, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Beloved, Moby-Dick, and Gravity’s Rainbow—works dwelling on topics from self-invention to the promise and pitfalls of democracy. The canvas of the great American novel is in constant motion, reflecting revolutions in fictional fashion, the changing face of authorship, and the inseparability of high culture from popular. As Buell reveals, the elusive G.A.N. showcases the myth of the United States as a nation perpetually under construction. “Engaging and provocative . . . ultimately affirms the importance of literature to a nation’s sense of itself.” —Sarah Graham, Times Literary Supplement “Rich in critical insight . . . Buell wonders if the GAN isn’t stirring again in surprising new developments in science fiction. An impressively ambitious literary survey.” —Booklist (starred review)
