Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Cleaning of Surfaces and Water Droplet Mobility deals with the self-cleaning of hydrophobic surfaces. Chapters cover the basics of wetting states of fluids and surface characteristics in terms of texture topology and free energy. The self-cleaning aspects of surfaces, such as various synthesizing and fabrication processes are then introduced and discussed, along with environmental dust properties, including elemental compositions, particle sizes and shapes, and their chemo-mechanics characteristics. In addition, mud formation in humid air, as well as ambient and dry mud adhesion on optically transparent surfaces is explored, as is water droplet dynamics on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, amongst other topics. The book fills the gap between the physical fundamentals of surface energy and texture characteristics for practical applications of surface cleaning and provides a basic understanding of the self-cleaning of surfaces that will be idea for academics, researchers and students. Showcases the fundamental aspects of the self-cleaning of surfaces Includes practical applications in energy and other sectors Contains a review of the characterization of environmental dust on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces Discusses the fabrication and optimization of surfaces towards self-cleaning Presents practical applications of the self-cleaning of surfaces via water droplet mobility

Book The Self cleaning Mechanism

Download or read book The Self cleaning Mechanism written by Tabea Heckenthaler and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust particles can adhere to surfaces, and thereby, can decrease the efficiency of diverse processes, such as light absorption by solar panels. To efficiently (in terms of energy and time) clean surfaces, it has been proposed to employ the bio-inspired "self-cleaning" mechanism, in which water droplets slide/roll along the surface, and thereby detach (clean) particles from the surfaces. It was shown that superhydrophobicity is beneficial for the self-cleaning mechanism: superhydrophobicity reduces the friction between water droplets and the surfaces, thus, allowing water droplets to slide on the surface. However, the forces that attach and detach particles from surfaces during the self-cleaning mechanism, and on the effect of nanotextures on these forces, are not fully understood. To shed light on these forces, and the effect of nanotexture on them, I prepared four Si-based samples (relevant to solar panels): (1) smooth or (2) nanotextured hydrophilic surfaces, and (3) smooth or (4) nano texturedhydrophobic surfaces. In agreement with previous publications, it is shown that the efficiency of particle removal increases with hydrophobicity. Furthermore, nanotexture enhances the hydrophobicity, and increases particle removal. Specifically, hydrophilic particle removal increased from ~41%, from hydrophilic smooth Si wafer, to ~98% from superhydrophobic Si-based nanotextured surfaces. However, my results and analysis show that the reason for the increased particle removal is not small friction between the droplets and the superhydrophobic surfaces; it is the reduction of the adhesion force between the particle and the surface, and the altered geometry of the water-particle-air line tension acting on the particles on superhydrophobic surfaces, which increases the force that can detach particles from the surfaces. The experimental methods and the derived criterion for particle removal can be implemented to engineer self-cleaning surfaces using other surfaces and dust particles, exhibiting different chemistries and/or textures.

This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the structure-property-process relationship of biomaterials from engineering and biomedical perspectives, and the potential of bio-inspired materials and their applications. A large variety of natural materials with outstanding physical and mechanical properties have appeared in the course of evolution. From a bio-inspired viewpoint, materials design requires a novel and highly cross disciplinary approach. Considerable benefits can be gained by providing an integrated approach using bio-inspiration with materials science and engineering. The book is divided into three parts; Part One focuses on mechanical aspects, dealing with conventional material properties: strength, toughness, hardness, wear resistance, impact resistance, self-healing, adhesion, and adaptation and morphing. Part Two focuses on functional materials with unique capabilities, such as self-cleaning, stimuli-response, structural color, anti-reflective materials, catalytic materials for clean energy conversion and storage, and other related topics. Part Three describes how to mimic natural materials processes to synthesize materials with low cost, efficient and environmentally friendly approaches. For each chapter, the approach is to describe situations in nature first and then biomimetic materials, fulfilling the need for an interdisciplinary approach which overlaps both engineering and materials science.
