Book The Segregation of Red Salmon in the Escapements to the Kvichak River System Alaska Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Segregation of Red Salmon in the Escapements to the Kvichak River System Alaska Classic Reprint written by Howard Donald Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Segregation of Red Salmon in the Escapements to the Kvichak River System, Alaska Chi-square tests of the hypothesis of like recovery distributions among four recovery points in 1957 and five recovery points in each of 1958 and 1959 gave values p=o.203, p and p respectively. It is significant that the high levels of p in 1958 and 1959 are associated with the strongest tests, i.e., more areas tested and greater numbers of recoveries. Since the values of p are high in all 3 years, segregation in time of passage at Igiugig is probably minimal. It is important, however, to consider whether these recoveries are representative of the single spawning groups (as defined) utilizing specific spawning grounds. On Copper and Iliamna Rivers the recoveries are surely representative of those systems. Figure 6.-recoveries by experiment, 1958, Kvichak River system. For explanation of figure, see legend to figure 5. Copper River recoveries were virtually all made by fri personnel during stream surveys well above the river mouth; Iliamna River recoveries by fri personnel and by personal use fishermen. Iliamna River is geographically isolated, and personal-use fishing is con ducted well inside the river so there should have been little doubt of the destination of tagged fish taken there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statistical Records and Computations on Red Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) Runs in the Nushagak District, Bristol Bay, Alaska, 1946-59 Accurate determination of sex ratio of fish on the spawning grounds is difficult because of observed differences between sexes in behavior during and after Spawning, in time of dying after spawning, in drifting after death, and in selective feeding by predators. The sex ratios from live and dead counts that were considered to be most representative have been used to arrive at escapement sex ratios in the Wood River lakes for the period 1946 58. In 1959, sex ratios for the Wood River lakes escapement were obtained from daily samples collected throughout the season by beach seine as the salmon entered Lake Aleknagik from Wood River. Daily sex ratios in 1959 were weighted by daily escapements past the Wood River tower enumeration site. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spawning Escapement of Okanogan River Blueback Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka), 1957 The 1957 return of blueback was of special interest since the he's were the progeny of the 1953 escapement which was one of the largest in recent years. The most unusual feature of the 1953 run was that over 86 percent of the Okanogan spawners were 3-year-old fish whose sex ratio of males to females was The bulk of these 3-year-old fish escape the fishery and continue to the Okanogan where in normal years they comprise about 22 percent of the spawning population. These small fish seem to be peculiar to the Okanogan and are seldom encountered in the other two systems. Table 6 demonstrates the occurrence of 3-year-old Columbia River blueback for the last 7 years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
