Book Geochemistry and Sedimentology of the Mediterranean Sea

Download or read book Geochemistry and Sedimentology of the Mediterranean Sea written by E.M. Emelyanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph presented to foreign readers has been prepared by the famous Soviet investigators of processes of geochemistry and sedimentation in the Mediterranean Sea. For more than 20 years E.M. Emelyanov has examined the recent sedimentation of the Mediterranean Sea and K.M. Shimkus has studied the Quaternary and the earlier sedi mentation of the area. The authors, scientific workers from the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, USSR Academy of Sciences (Atlantic and Southern Depart ments), took part not only in numerous cruises on oceanographic vessels of the USSR, but in the study of cores of the deep-sea drilling on R/V "Glomar Challenger". A great number of scientific papers and some books devoted to the processes of sedimentation and geochemistry of the Mediterranean Sea were written by them. Although the scientific interests of the authors are not only limited to these questions, I should like to emphasise these aspects of their scientific activity when introducing this book. The Mediterranean Sea is a suitable natural laboratory for solving a number of principal problems of marine sedimentation and lithogenesis.

  • Author : Arnold L. Gordon
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483226492
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Oceanography written by Arnold L. Gordon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 46: Oceanography covers the program of oceanographic studies conducted during the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The program includes long wave and sea level recording, deep water circulation, polar front survey, and multipleship current measurement. This book is composed of six chapters and begins with the objective and aims of the oceanographic program and the national contributions to this program. The succeeding chapters discuss the problem in delineating sea-level cycle and the results of the North Atlantic Polar Front Survey in the IGY. These topics are followed by a survey of the results from many oceanographical expeditions. Particularly good results were obtained during the IGY period by the use of special large-scale precision automatic recorders of the phototelegraph station type. The last chapter describes the artificial radioactivity in the oceans consisting mainly of fission products of U235, Pu239 and U238 from reactors and nuclear explosion devices. This book is of value to geophysicists, and marine scientists and researchers.

Book Petrology of the Sedimentary Rocks

Download or read book Petrology of the Sedimentary Rocks written by J. Greensmith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 75 years of the existence of this book the content and boundaries of sedimentary petrology have increased enormously. It is doubtful if there are any areas of the subject described by the original authors which have remained untouched by the relatively recent onslaught by countless sedimentologists, aided by a veritable armoury of sophisticated techniques. Particular areas have always waxed and waned in popularity and some subjects, such as heavy mineral studies which have been successively popular, then unpopular, appear of late to have had a new lease on life. The development and application of relatively old techniques, but now used in a sedimentological context, often brings an upsurge and revival of interest in some rocks. Isotope work has now become an integral part of the study of pelagic and phosphatic sediments, and carbonate cements. An understanding of burial diagenesis, a much neglected area, is slowly coming to the fore as electron microscopes and X-rays delve into the mineralogical and textural complexities of ancient sediments. Yet, despite the 'zapping' of minerals with electron beams and generating gases to pass into a mass spectrometer, to paraphrase an erstwhile research student of mine, the danger of this approach is that materials are analysed with scant regard to field relationships or petrographic control, thus much genetic information is missing when interpretations are attempted. Petrography is far from being archaic.

Book Cenozoic Volcanism in the Tyrrhenian Sea Region

Download or read book Cenozoic Volcanism in the Tyrrhenian Sea Region written by Angelo Peccerillo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an updated edition of the book by the same author: "Plio-Quaternary volcanism in Italy - Petrology, geochemistry, geodynamics," published in 2005 by Springer. This edition has the same structure as the previous publication, with a general introduction; various chapters dedicated to different volcanic provinces in Italy; and a final chapter on the relationships between magmatism and geodynamics. It includes information that has become available in the last ten years, and new chapters have been added offering detailed discussions of the Oligo-Miocene orogenic volcanism on Sardinia and of some small outcrops of fragmented volcanic rocks occurring in several places of the Apennines. This new edition now covers the entire Tyrrhenian Sea magmatism of the last 40 Ma. Lastly, it includes two appendices: Appendix 1 reports on a comparison between the Tyrrhenian Sea volcanism and the partially coeval magmatism along the Alps and adjoining areas and has the objective of highlighting similarities and difference that can tell us much on geodynamics and magmatism between the converging plates of Europe and Africa. Appendix 2 is an update of the 2005 edition appendix and deals with classification of orogenic rocks with special emphasis on potassic alkaline volcanics.
