Download or read book The Wakefield Pageants in the Towneley Cycle written by Arthur C. Cawley and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an edition of the six complete pageants which together form the major part of the Wakefield Group in the Towneley cycle. Although they were probably written by the same playwright and are certainly among the best pageants written for the religious stage in medieval England, they have not been edited before as a group. Two, Magnus Herodes and the Coliphizacio, have not been reprinted since 1897, except by the Early English Text Society in its reprints of the Towneley Plays which it first published in that year. Furthermore, every edition of a Towneley pageant published since 1897 has been based on the EETS text, without reference to the manuscript itself which is in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. The text of the edition presented here is newly transcribed from photographs of the manuscripts, and this transcription has resulted in several improved readings. This is the first book in the Series of Old and Middle English Texts under

It is divided into two major areas, mystery cycles and morality plays, and it examines the plays from a performance perspective. The book makes special reference to those texts contained within selections of plays which can be readily obtained by students, including A.C.Cawley's Everyman and Medieval Miracle Plays (Dent). The staging conventions of pageant waggon performance, place and scaffold playing and the drama of the Hall are explored in relation to the cultural context of the medieval period.

Book The Chester Mystery Cycle

Part of a series on medieval casebooks, this volume six looks at the Chester Mystery Cycle Play manuscripts and comparisons of the York and Chester Cycle. Theologically a product of the Middle Ages, historically a product of the Renaissance, what we today call the Chester Mystery Cycle is a series of twenty-four plays dramatizing the events of salvation history from Creation until Doomsday. One of four surviving English mystery cycles, the Chester Cycle, which originally included a twenty-fifth play of the Assumption surpressed sometime in the mid-sixteenth century, was, until more modern times, last performed in 1575.

Book The Manor the Plowman and the Shepherd

Download or read book The Manor the Plowman and the Shepherd written by Ordelle G. Hill and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the early sixteenth century, the agrarian landscape changed to more pastoral land, more enclosures, and a decrease in (or a rearrangement of) manorial lands. Increased population and an abundance of labor created economic tensions that caused moralizers to cry out for reform, but there is no evidence pastoral lands decreased even by the end of the century. In literature, the plowman tradition continued to exist in such forms as the remarkable sermon by Bishop Latimer, but more often than not it was viewed nostalgically as part of the past, and used to address the problems brought about by the pastoral economy of the sixteenth century. The plowman can be identified even as late as Spenser's Faerie Queene where he assumes the moral associations of the fourteenth-century type, and in Sidney where the plowman becomes the unsympathetic buffoon.
