Download or read book Shutting Out the Sun written by Michael Zielenziger and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s second-wealthiest country, Japan once seemed poised to overtake America. But its failure to recover from the economic collapse of the early 1990s was unprecedented, and today it confronts an array of disturbing social trends. Japan has the highest suicide rate and lowest birthrate of all industrialized countries, and a rising incidence of untreated cases of depression. Equally as troubling are the more than one million young men who shut themselves in their rooms, withdrawing from society, and the growing numbers of “parasite singles,” the name given to single women who refuse to leave home, marry, or bear children. In Shutting Out the Sun, Michael Zielenziger argues that Japan’s rigid, tradition-steeped society, its aversion to change, and its distrust of individuality and the expression of self are stifling economic revival, political reform, and social evolution. Giving a human face to the country’s malaise, Zielenziger explains how these constraints have driven intelligent, creative young men to become modern-day hermits. At the same time, young women, better educated than their mothers and earning high salaries, are rejecting the traditional path to marriage and motherhood, preferring to spend their money on luxury goods and travel. Smart, unconventional, and politically controversial, Shutting Out the Sun is a bold explanation of Japan’s stagnation and its implications for the rest of the world.

Download or read book Hiroshima written by John Hersey and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hiroshima is the story of six people—a clerk, a widowed seamstress, a physician, a Methodist minister, a young surgeon, and a German Catholic priest—who lived through the greatest single manmade disaster in history. In vivid and indelible prose, Pulitzer Prize–winner John Hersey traces the stories of these half-dozen individuals from 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, when Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atomic bomb ever dropped on a city, through the hours and days that followed. Almost four decades after the original publication of this celebrated book, Hersey went back to Hiroshima in search of the people whose stories he had told, and his account of what he discovered is now the eloquent and moving final chapter of Hiroshima.
Download or read book Japanese Secret Projects written by Edwin M. Dyer and published by Crecy Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprisingly, secret Japanese planes of World War II remain an area that has been largely ignored due to scarcity of information. They do, however, have a large base of interest as unlike the majority of secret Luftwaffe programs that were resigned to the drawing board, the vast number of aircraft featured within this book actually flew or were in development. The book begins with an overview of the IJN and IJA through the early years to 1945, and their secret technical exchanges with the Luftwaffe throughout the war. It is divided into two sections dedicated to the two armed forces, with a total of 34 aircraft examined, each with its history, performance, and combat records laid out in an easy to read fashion. The book provides photographs, technical drawings, and stunning color renditions of the aircraft in combat. Notable emphasis is placed upon the supersonic kamikaze aircraft, the Amerika bomber, and the ways in which the Japanese improved on German technology, particularly the Me 262 and Komet. Secret Japanese armaments are also covered in detail, with information uncovered on guided missiles, rockets, and cannons. A gripping read for aviation and military enthusiasts around the world!

Download or read book The Transnational Redress Movement for the Victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery written by Pyong Gap Min and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the redress movement for the victims of Japanese military sexual slavery in South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. comprehensively. The Japanese military forcefully mobilized about 80,000-200,000 Asian women to Japanese military brothels and forced them into sexual slavery during the Asian-Pacific War (1932-1945). Korean "comfort women" are believed to have been the largest group because of Korea’s colonial status. The redress movement for the victims started in South Korea in the late 1980s. The emergence of Korean "comfort women" to society to tell the truth beginning in 1991 and the discovery of Japanese historical documents, proving the responsibility of the Japanese military for establishing and operating military brothels by a Japanese historian in 1992 accelerated the redress movement for the victims. The movement has received strong support from UN human rights bodies, the U.S. and other Western countries. It has also greatly contributed to raising people’s consciousness of sexual violence against women at war. However, the Japanese government has not made a sincere apology and compensation to the victims to bring justice to the victims.

His beautiful girlfriend, Mitsuko, has taken over the day-to-day management of a dress shop in the neighborhood of Marunouchi, Naka-ku, Nagoya. But when a mother, a Mrs. Nishimoto, asks Matt to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and possible abduction of her daughter, he is drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse where nothing is as it seems. For his part, Matt spends his days first in Hakusanbora, Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, and later in Sakae’s streets and alleys looking for the missing woman. And later back to Tokyo to get help from some new friends. As Matt delves deeper into the investigation, he uncovers layers of corruption and deceit that reach far beyond the missing woman and the Chubu-kai yakuza. Along the way, he must navigate the complexities of Japanese society, from the glamorous nightclubs of Sakae to the seedy back alleys of Nagoya, in order to piece together the puzzle and stay alive. The deeper Matt delves into the investigation, the more he realizes that nothing is what it seems, and that the truth is far more sinister than he ever imagined. Will he be able to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice, or will he become just another pawn in a deadly game of power and deceit?
