Book The Secret World of Weather How to Read Signs in Every Cloud Breeze Hill Street Plant Animal and Dewdrop Natural Navigation

Download or read book The Secret World of Weather How to Read Signs in Every Cloud Breeze Hill Street Plant Animal and Dewdrop Natural Navigation written by Tristan Gooley and published by The Experiment, LLC. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to “see” the forecast in the hidden weather signs all around you—from the New York Times–bestselling author of How to Read a Tree and The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs In The Secret World of Weather, bestselling author Tristan Gooley turns his gaze up to the sky, bringing his signature brand of close observation and eye-opening deduction to the fascinating world of weather. Every cloud, every change in temperature, every raindrop, every sunbeam, every breeze reveals something about our weather—if you know what to look for. Before you know it, you’ll be able to forecast impending storms, sunny days, and everything in between, all without needing to consult your smartphone. But The Secret World of Weather goes far beyond mere weather prediction, changing the very way we think about weather itself. Weather is not something that blankets an area; rather, it changes constantly as you walk through woods or turn down a street. The weather is never identical on two sides of a tree—or even beneath it. Take, for example, Gooley’s remarkable discovery that breezes accelerate beneath a tree. To Gooley, this is “weather,” a tiny microclimate that explains why people sit beneath a tree to cool down—not only for the shade but, subconsciously, for cooler breeze. And so Gooley shows us not only what the weather will be like five days from now, but also what to expect about the weather around every corner. By carefully observing the subtle interplay of wind, cloud, fog, temperature, rain and many other phenomena, we not only form a deeper understanding of weather patterns, but also unlock secrets about our environment. Weather forms our landscape, and landscape forms our weather. Everything we see in the sky reflects where we are. When we learn to read weather’s signs, Gooley shows us, the weather becomes our map, revealing to us how it has made our towns, cities, woods, and hills what they are. You’ll never see your surroundings the same way again.

Book Secret Worlds

  • Author : Martin Stevens
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2021-06-10
  • ISBN : 019254313X
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Secret Worlds written by Martin Stevens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Stevens explores the extraordinary variety of senses in the animal kingdom, and discusses the cutting-edge science that is shedding light on these secret worlds. Our senses of vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch are essential for us to respond to threats, communicate and interact with the world around us. This is true for all animals - their sensory systems are key to survival, and without them animals would be completely helpless. However, the sensory systems of other animals work very differently from ours. For example, many animals from spiders to birds can detect and respond to ultraviolet light, to which we are blind. Other animals, including many insects, rodents, and bats can hear high-frequency ultrasonic sounds well beyond our own hearing range. Many other species have sensory systems that we lack completely, such as the magnetic sense of birds, turtles, and other animals, or the electric sense of many fish. These differences in sensory ability have a major bearing on the ways that animals behave and live in different environments, and also affect their evolution and ecology. In this book, Martin Stevens explores the remarkable sensory systems that exist in nature, and what they are used for. Discussing how different animal senses work, he also considers how they evolve, how they are shaped by the environment in which an animal lives, and the pioneering science that has uncovered how animals use their senses. Throughout, he celebrates the remarkable diversity of life, and shows how the study of sensory systems has shed light on some of the most important issues in animal behaviour, physiology, and evolution.

Book The Animal in the Secret World of Darwin

Download or read book The Animal in the Secret World of Darwin written by Michel Bergeron and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientist Charles Darwin discretely opened the possibility of a purely animalistic origin for the human species. He repeatedly insisted that the differences between humans and others were a question of degree only. Sciences were, however, taken in the opposite direction, where these differences cannot have been generated by the natural processes of biological evolution. In The Animal in the Secret World of Darwin, author Michel Bergeron discuses the effects on the sciences caused by the presence of questions on humanity only answerable with religious beliefs. His investigation suggests that significant elements of perceived humanity have remained sufficiently narrowly defined to continue to agree with religious beliefs over the entire period starting with the scientific revolution centuries ago and reaching the present. Instead, he questions, could we be the simple animal who can only live on the belief not to be a simple animal? To alleviate these biases on the sciences of life, Bergeron advocates a different synthesis between Darwinism and Lamarckism. He further asks: How can sciences pretend to a cosmology neutral in term of religious influence since all of its complex mathematical developments were made under the constraint that we can link the present directly to the Big Bang?

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Stevens
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 0198813678
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book Secret Worlds written by Martin Stevens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do animals experience the world? Many animals experience a world far richer than ours, in sight, sound, and smell, and interact with each other in ways humans simply do not pick up, and which continue to surprise researchers. This book explores not only the wonder of animal senses, but how they work and how scientists go about investigating them. And, throughout, it considers how these senses came to be: the book explains that evolution is at the root of it all. Senses arose to enable animals to catch prey, to hide, and to mate more effectively, usually honed through fierce competition and arms races with predators. The result, over millions of years, is a wondrous panoply of ways of experiencing the world, against which our own senses often pale into insignificance.
