As the massive glaciers fade and the wide seas rise, the warm grasslands of the Americas bring prosperity to the gentle People of the Red World, followers of the Great Ghost Spirit, the White Mammoth. But farther north, where the harsh dry winds howl, another nation, the People of the Watching Star, are enmeshed with legends of an evil shaman and the man-eating monster called the wanawut. Relentlessly they have hunted the mammoth to near extinction. Now, as raiders and ravagers they are coming south to invade the villages of the People of the Red World. The only ones who can prevent the murder of innocents and the final slaughter of the mammoth are a young boy shaman to whom the animals speak, a man whose strength equals his conviction, and a woman who hopes that, beyond violence and cruelty, humankind will recognize a stronger power—the force of love.

Book A Lapidary of Sacred Stones

Download or read book A Lapidary of Sacred Stones written by Claude Lecouteux and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive dictionary of sacred and magical gem lore that draws on the rarest source texts of Antiquity and the Middle Ages • Reveals the healing and magical virtues of familiar gemstones, such as amethyst, emerald, and diamond, as well as the lore surrounding exotic stones such as astrios, a stone celebrated by ancient magicians • Examines bezoars (stones formed in animals’ bodies) and “magnets” that attract materials other than metal • Based on ancient Arabic, Greek, Jewish, and European sources, ranging from the observations of Pliny the Elder to extremely rare texts such as the Picatrix and Damigeron’s Virtue of Stones Our ancestors believed stones were home to sacred beings of power, entities that if properly understood and cultivated could provide people protection from ill fortune, envy, and witchcraft; grant invisibility and other magical powers; improve memory; and heal the sick from a wide variety of diseases. These benefits could be obtained by wearing the stone on a ring, bracelet, or pendant; through massage treatments with the stone; or by reducing the gem into a powder and drinking it mixed with water or wine. Drawing from a wealth of ancient Arabic, Greek, Jewish, and European sources--from the observations of Pliny the Elder to extremely rare texts such as the Picatrix and Damigeron’s Virtue of Stones--Claude Lecouteux provides a synthesis of all known lore for more than 800 stones. He includes such common examples as the emerald, which when engraved with the figure of a harpy holding a lamprey in its claws will banish panic and nightmares, and beryl, which when appropriately carved can summon water spirits or win its owner high renown, as well as more exotic stones such as astrios, a stone celebrated by ancient magicians and whose center glows like a star. Lecouteux also examines bezoars--stones formed in animals’ bodies--as well as “magnets” that attract materials other than iron, such as gold, flesh, cotton, or scorpions. This comprehensive dictionary of sacred and magical gem lore, drawn from the rarest sources of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, represents a one-of-a-kind resource for gem enthusiasts and magical practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: Clark was lying on his side, blood pooling around his body from the open wound on his back. Sputtering for breath he whispered, "I wish I had never taken the stone."A few weeks earlier: He was drawn to it like a wolf to raw meat; it was instinctual. He knew his Grandpa Roy would never buy it for him - especially after the week they'd had, but he wanted it anyway. It was like he needed it - like his life was no longer complete without it. Now it was all a matter of how to get it. The man selling the item appeared to be a Native American around the age of 75, with dark reddish skin and long, silver braided hair. His eyes, however, with dark brown irises that seemed to deepen when you gazed at them, and eyebrows that scowled as if he was thinking about a former rival, looked as if they could see into your soul.As Roy left for the restroom Clark watched the stand. It only took him a moment to finalize a plan on how to steal the bolo tie. He just needed the right circumstances - he had to have just the right situation in order to get it. He couldn't believe he was about to do this - he knew better than to steal! All of his previous reasoning against stealing seemed so menial, so insignificant now. It was like those reasons didn't even matter. Something was pushing him harder than he had ever experienced to take the stone on the cord. He felt as if it was made just for him.He noticed a large group of people about to walk by and seized his opportunity. As he looked at the way the booth was set up, a perfect plan formulated in his mind. He picked the corner on the right and quickly nudged it with his hip, ever so slightly, knocking over a statue of a bald eagle. While pretending to catch the eagle, Clark kicked out his leg, tripping a passerby who was walking too close. The action sent the woman sprawling straight towards the display and all of the antiques. Someone shrieked as they watched the woman fall towards the booth. With all of the commotion and the attention off the antiques, Clark seized the moment. Reaching out, he grabbed the very end of the cord and tucked his prize tightly into his fist, away from prying eyes. Before Clark finished concealing the stone, the old man running the stand lurched forward and steadied the eagle statue with his right hand, saved the woman from crashing into his booth with his left, and then turned so rapidly Clark thought he was seeing things - and grabbed Clark's arm. Clark winced from the grip, then locked eyes with him for what seemed like decades. The Native American's eyes appeared to be hundreds of years old. He stared penetratingly into them for just a moment, then glanced down at his hands. Worn and leathery, they looked as if they'd battled enemies hundreds of times. How had he not noticed them before? The strength and agility this man possessed for his age was incredible. As Clark's thoughts lingered on the Native American, he removed a knife from his sleeve and slashed it down toward Clark's wrist.

Book excerpt: This book, good for many years of teaching, is a must for the library of anyone who likes to study or teach the Bible. It is a deep study of the stones of the Bible, starting with the process of cutting stones, followed by each jewel on the High Priest breastplate, continuing on with discoveries of the various other stones found in the Bible, explained through the Hebrew language to allow the stones to illuminate themselves. These hidden meanings bring insight, revelation and a deeper understanding of the Bible. Not being able to find a book on this subject, Nancy Lou Hamilton researched each and every stone for herself for many years. She used many books of gemstones and reference books, finding much diversity. This study will enlighten you in many ways, from the character of the twelve tribes of the Old Testament to the character you should have as a Christian.
