Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Masters, Vol. 1: One Hundred Examples of Their Work Chosen From European Galleries and Reproduced in Colour With Notes on the Pictures HE object of these volumes is, so far as may be possible, to bring some of the I great pictures of the world into our houses that we may have them always with us. That even the best photographs fail to do this is obvious; for while they serve well enough as reminders and give indeed the outline of the picture accurately enough, all the colour and atmosphere is lost, in the sombre brown or grey monotone into which some wonder full of sunshine has passed. Here at least something of that glory of colour has been kept with a really wonderful success, as in the marvellous triptych of Perugino or the Corryfeld of Constable. And whilst it remains impossible to reproduce an exact replica of any picture, it may safely be said that, so far as human ingenuity at present goes, the reproductions of the Old Masters here shown will be found to be as near the originals as it is possible to bring them. The whole series of a hundred pictures comprises a careful selection from the Picture Galleries of the world and from the work of all schools of Painting. Each volume contains fifty works, twenty of which are from paintings in the National Gallery, whilst others are from works at Rome, Florence, Paris, St Petersburg, Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and Vienna. We may add that every effort has been made to do the fullest justice possible to the Old Masters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He wore an aspect of gloomy meditation. His arms were folded, his brow lowering, his chin depressed so that it was almost lost in the high, thin coat-collar of sable camlet. He was very tall, - in fact, standing in the niche he did, he seemed almost gigantic. His eyes were splendid, and beyond his massive brow his features were indifferent; but the eyes and the brow would have redeemed the ugliness of a satyr. He half *smiled as he replied, still hugging his coat-collar: He is not doing badly, but has much to learn. That I have, responded the modest violinist. I feel like a child, yet, trying to conquer the alphabet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret The plot of this amusing little piece is of some edticuity. It forms the basis ci Calderons comedy "E Exxdida y la Tapida," and was used by Isaac Bickerstaff in his play of Tis Well Its no Worse, produced at Drury Lane in 1770. The celebrated John Philip Kemble embodied the story in his play of The Panel, acted in the year 1788. Mr. King and Mrs. Abington were distinguished in their characters, and the piece was played several nights. Moncrieff again reduced the incidents, and formed the present agreeable farce of "The Secret" from the tragedians comedy. Some fifteen years' since, a musical piece, under the title of "Hide and Seek," and containing the whole plot of "The Panel," was performed at the English Opera House, with some success. Mr. Poole was accused of using the principal incidents in his farce of "A Hole in the Wall," but the author of "Paul Pry" indignantly denied the plagiary in question - but at the same time forgot to acknowledge his obligations to the -"Braggart Captain" of Plautus, from which piece he borrowed the entire plot of "The Hole in the wall." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique, highly contextualized translation of the Laozi is based on the earliest known edition of the work, Text A of the Mawangdui Laozi, written before 202 BCE. No other editions are comparable to this text in its antiquity. Hongkyung Kim also incorporates the recent archaeological discovery of Laozi-related documents disentombed in 1993 in Guodian, seeing these documents as proto-materials for compilation of the Laozi and revealing clues for disentangling the work from complicated exegetical contentions. Kim makes extensive use of Chinese commentaries on the Laozi and also examines the classic Chinese texts closely associated with the formation of the work to illuminate the intellectual and historical context of Laozi's philosophy. Kim offers several original and thought-provoking arguments on the Laozi, including that the work was compiled during the Qin, which has traditionally been viewed as typical of Legalist states, and that the Laozi should be recognized as a syncretic text before being labeled a Daoist one.
