Book Secret Knowledge New and Expanded Edition

Download or read book Secret Knowledge New and Expanded Edition written by David Hockney and published by Avery. This book was released on 2006-10-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Secret Knowledge created an international sensation when it was first published. David Hockney's theory of how the great works of Western art were created with mirrors and lenses attracted major media attention around the world and generated intense debate in the fields of science and art history. Now, in this expanded edition, Hockney takes his thesis even further, revealing for the first time new findings." "In Secret Knowledge, Hockney explains how he uncovered piece after piece of scientific and visual evidence, each one yielding further revelations about the past. With the benefit of his painter's eye, he examines the major works of art history and reveals the truth of how artists such as Caravaggio, Velazquez, van Eyck, Holbein, da Vinci, and Ingres used mirrors and lenses to help them create their famous masterpieces. For this new edition, Hockney delves still deeper into art history, disclosing the evidence that Renaissance artists also used these methods to develop perspective and chiaroscuro - radically challenging our view of how these two foundations of Western art were established." "Hundreds of paintings and drawings are reproduced and accompanied by Hockney's descriptions. His own photographs and drawings illustrate the various methods used by past artists to capture accurate likenesses and present the results they would have achieved. In addition, extracts from the many historical and modern documents he uncovered offer further intriguing evidence, while correspondence between him and an array of international experts provides an account of the remarkable story as it happened." "Secret Knowledge is not just about the lost techniques of the Old Masters. It is also about now and the future. It is about how we see, treat, and make images today, in an age of computer manipulation."--BOOK JACKET.

CHAPTER III THE THREE OILS While on the subject of oil it may be useful to note some of the constituents and character of the oils used generally by artists, as ascertained by the noted German chemist, Pettenkofer. Without entering into the chemical details, in a general way it may be stated that of the three oils--linseed, poppy, and nut oil--linseed contains a higher percentage of the "linolein" or real working and durable part of the oil. The proportion of ' linolein' in linseed is eighty per cent, in poppy seventyfive, in nut sixty-seven, according to Pettenkofer. The other twenty, twenty-five, and thirty-three per cent respectively of the oil constituent is a mucilaginous substance, and in proportion to its presence in quantity is deleterious and injurious. It produces opacity and hinders a quick drying. In my judgment the manner in which the oil is expressed from the seed is the important part. If the seed is pressed too hard, as seems to be the rule nowadays with hydraulic presses of great power, the ground linseed meal being constantly in direct contact with steam, it is not surprising that the undesirable substances are expressed with the oil. It seems to me that the old, slow Italian process is the best, where each artist made his own oil from the seed by a slow water process with the aid of the sun, without steam or pressure, and without the mixture of injurious chemicals. This is the safest kind of oil to employ. But if pressure must be resorted to, it should not be so excessive. The oil itself varies in the same seed, supposing all the time you have the best, full-grown, ripe seed. The first pressings are the best. The difference in color is the only thing to make some artists favor poppy oil in preference to linseed, the...

Download or read book The Master Game written by Graham Hancock and published by Red Wheel Weiser. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Master Game is a rollercoaster intellectual journey through the back streets and rat runs of history to uncover the traces in architecture and monuments of a secret religion that has shaped the world. Pivotal historical events and processes, not least the Renaissance, the birth of scientific rationalism, and the French and American revolutions, are radically reevaluated in the light of new investigative evidence presented in The Master Game. Even the belief that the United States has a "global mission," so obvious today, may ultimately prove to be less the result of a shortterm reaction to terrorism than the inevitable working out of a covert plan originally set in motion almost two thousand years ago. The Master Game refers to a scheme or "game" played on the world stage to bring about a world order governed by a lofty goal which, today, we term the "Masonic Ideal." The Master Game traces the origins of this game of symbols and words and talismans from ancient Egypt all the way to modern times, and places it squarely on the elitist Scottish Rite Freemasonry, headquartered in Washington, DC, and ruled by a secretive and powerful brotherhood of men who have attained the thirtythird degree. The Master Game exposes this world order's true purpose and, more importantly, shows how it has affected the United States of America and badly backfired on 9/11. The book is adapted and expanded from the authors' earlier, outofprint book Talisman.
