Download or read book The Loch Ness Monster and Other Unexplained Mysteries written by JF Derry and published by Haynes Publishing UK. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s 80 years after the first modern-day sighting of the Loch Ness Monster and yet despite frequent eye witness accounts since then, sonar images and even video footage, still no one knows for sure whether there really is a serpent-like prehistoric behemoth inhabiting the famous Scottish lake. More amazing is that Nessie is only one of countless extraordinary terrestrial and extraterrestrial life-forms that have been reported worldwide over the course of the last century or so: the Yeti and Bigfoot; British big cats such as The Beasts of Bodmin and Stroud; paranormal manifestations in the form of ghosts, banshees and poltergeists; and visitors from other worlds, aliens and their UFOs. The list is astonishing and extensive, but the remarkable Daily Mirror archive has accumulated a wealth of articles and pictures from sightings, visitations, apparitions and alien abductions, many of which are now collected together in this otherworldly monster of a book, “Loch Ness Monster and Other Unexplained Mysteries."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A sharp analysis of the quest for unreal critters―cryptids, as they are called―and the people who pursue them . . . entertaining and thoroughly documented.” —The Wall Street Journal Throughout our history, humans have been captivated by mythic beasts and legendary creatures. Tales of Bigfoot, the Yeti, and the Loch Ness monster are part of our collective experience. Now comes a book from two dedicated investigators that explores and elucidates the fascinating world of cryptozoology. Daniel Loxton and Donald R. Prothero have written an entertaining, educational, and definitive text on cryptids, presenting the arguments both for and against their existence and systematically challenging the pseudoscience that perpetuates their myths. After examining the nature of science and pseudoscience and their relation to cryptozoology, Loxton and Prothero take on Bigfoot; the Yeti, or Abominable Snowman, and its cross-cultural incarnations; the Loch Ness monster and its highly publicized sightings; the evolution of the Great Sea Serpent; and Mokele Mbembe, or the Congo dinosaur. They conclude with an analysis of the psychology behind the persistent belief in paranormal phenomena, identifying the major players in cryptozoology, discussing the character of its subculture, and considering the challenge it poses to clear and critical thinking in our increasingly complex world. “As valuable for its analysis of the hunted as it is for the light it shines on the still-hopeful hunters.” —Publishers Weekly “Highly recommended for readers looking for scientific but accessible evaluations of the existence of five notable cryptids that have captured our imaginations.” —Library Journal (starred review)

Book Time Restored

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Betts
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2011-05-19
  • ISBN : 019162084X
  • Pages : 484 pages

Download or read book Time Restored written by Jonathan Betts and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-05-19 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Rupert T. Gould (1890-1948), the polymath and horologist. A remarkable man, Lt Cmdr Gould made important contributions in an extraordinary range of subject areas throughout his relatively short and dramatically troubled life. From antique clocks to scientific mysteries, from typewriters to the first systematic study of the Loch Ness Monster, Gould studied and published on them all. With the title The Stargazer, Gould was an early broadcaster on the BBC's Children's Hour when, with his encyclopaedic knowledge, he became known as The Man Who Knew Everything. Not surprisingly, he was also part of that elite group on BBC radio who formed The Brains Trust, giving on-the-spot answers to all manner of wide ranging and difficult questions. With his wide learning and photographic memory, Gould awed a national audience, becoming one of the era's radio celebrities. During the 1920s Gould restored the complex and highly significant marine timekeepers constructed by John Harrison (1693-1776), and wrote the unsurpassed classic, The Marine Chronometer, its History and Development. Today he is virtually unknown, his horological contributions scarcely mentioned in Dava Sobel's bestseller Longitude. The TV version of Longitude, in which Jeremy Irons played Rupert Gould, did at least introduce Gould's name to a wider public. Gould suffered terrible bouts of depression, resulting in a number of nervous breakdowns. These, coupled with his obsessive and pedantic nature, led to a scandalously-reported separation from his wife and cost him his family, his home, his job, and his closest friends. In this first-ever biography of Rupert Gould, Jonathan Betts, the Royal Observatory Greenwich's Senior Horologist, has given us a compelling account of a talented but flawed individual. Using hitherto unknown personal journals, the family's extensive collection of photographs, and the polymath's surviving records and notes, Betts tells the story of how Gould's early life, his naval career, and his celebrity status came together as this talented Englishman restored part of Britain's - and the world's - most important technical heritage: John Harrison's marine timekeepers.

Book The Apocryphal Cases of Sherlock Holmes

Download or read book The Apocryphal Cases of Sherlock Holmes written by R. Wolfgang Schramm and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. Wolfgang Schramm has created three science fiction-style, Sherlock Holmes stories in the Conan Doyle manner. Fans of the great consulting detective will enjoy Holmesacute; and Watson's adventures as they attempt to unravel some of the most baffling and well-known mysteries of the last century. Follow along with Holmes and Watson as they attempt to find the Loch Ness monster, uncover the secrets of the Shroud of Turin, and find the explanation for the enormous explosion that occurred in the Tunguska region of Russia in 1908. . Although a work of fiction, Schramm has made every effort to remain true to the historical facts in each of these three narratives. What actually happened is left as an exercise for the reader to determine, for history is not necessarily what happened but what has been recorded; thus, what is contained in these works is only one possible version of the truth. Even though Holmes and Watson are fictional characters, these stories in which they play a part are not without validity since they are based on actual facts, and Holmes' methods of problem solving mirror our modern use of the scientific method in the sciences and in criminal investigation. The Apocryphal Cases of Sherlock Holmes is lavishly illustrated . It contains 20 sketches by Artist Anne Foreman that literally bring the characters to life.
