Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information retrieval (IR) is becoming an increasingly important area as scientific, business and government organisations take up the notion of "information superhighways" and make available their full text databases for searching. Containing a selection of 35 papers taken from the 17th Annual SIGIR Conference held in Dublin, Ireland in July 1994, the book addresses basic research and provides an evaluation of information retrieval techniques in applications. Topics covered include text categorisation, indexing, user modelling, IR theory and logic, natural language processing, statistical and probabilistic models of information retrieval systems, routing, passage retrieval, and implementation issues.

Book Information Retrieval A Biomedical and Health Perspective

Book excerpt: This extensively revised 4th edition comprehensively covers information retrieval from a biomedical and health perspective, providing an understanding of the theory, implementation, and evaluation of information retrieval systems in the biomedical and health domain. It features revised chapters covering the theory, practical applications, evaluation and research directions of biomedical and health information retrieval systems. Emphasis is placed on defining where current applications and research systems are heading in a range of areas, including their use by clinicians, consumers, researchers, and others. Information Retrieval: A Biomedical and Health Perspective provides a practically applicable guide to range of techniques for information retrieval and is ideal for use by both the trainee and experienced biomedical informatician seeking an up-to-date resource on the topic.

Book Information Retrieval

    Book Details:
  • Author : David A. Grossman
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461555396
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Information Retrieval written by David A. Grossman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Retrieval: Algorithms and Heuristics is a comprehensive introduction to the study of information retrieval covering both effectiveness and run-time performance. The focus of the presentation is on algorithms and heuristics used to find documents relevant to the user request and to find them fast. Through multiple examples, the most commonly used algorithms and heuristics needed are tackled. To facilitate understanding and applications, introductions to and discussions of computational linguistics, natural language processing, probability theory and library and computer science are provided. While this text focuses on algorithms and not on commercial product per se, the basic strategies used by many commercial products are described. Techniques that can be used to find information on the Web, as well as in other large information collections, are included. This volume is an invaluable resource for researchers, practitioners, and students working in information retrieval and databases. For instructors, a set of Powerpoint slides, including speaker notes, are available online from the authors.

Book Test Collection Based Evaluation of Information Retrieval Systems

Download or read book Test Collection Based Evaluation of Information Retrieval Systems written by Mark Sanderson and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of test collections and evaluation measures to assess the effectiveness of information retrieval systems has its origins in work dating back to the early 1950s. Across the nearly 60 years since that work started, use of test collections is a de facto standard of evaluation. This monograph surveys the research conducted and explains the methods and measures devised for evaluation of retrieval systems, including a detailed look at the use of statistical significance testing in retrieval experimentation. This monograph reviews more recent examinations of the validity of the test collection approach and evaluation measures as well as outlining trends in current research exploiting query logs and live labs. At its core, the modern-day test collection is little different from the structures that the pioneering researchers in the 1950s and 1960s conceived of. This tutorial and review shows that despite its age, this long-standing evaluation method is still a highly valued tool for retrieval research.

Her contribution has been recognized by awards from the natural language processing, information retrieval and artificial intelligence communities, including being asked to present the prestigious Grace Hopper lecture. She continues to be an active and influential researcher. Her contribution to the scientific evaluation of the effectiveness of such computer systems has been quite outstanding. This book celebrates the life and work of Karen Spärck Jones in her seventieth year. It consists of fifteen new and original chapters written by leading international authorities reviewing the state of the art and her influence in the areas in which Karen Spärck Jones has been active. Although she has a publication record which goes back over forty years, it is clear even the very early work reviewed in the book can be read with profit by those working on recent developments in information processing like bioinformatics and the semantic web.
