Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Period of Quakerism The present volume is a sequel to The Beginnings of Quakerism, published in 1912, and completes, after fourteen years, my contribution to the History of the Society of Friends projected by my friend, the late John Wilhelm Rowntree. The wealth of materials that had to be sifted and the pre-occupations of war-time may serve to excuse its somewhat tardy appearance; but the hour is opportune for reviving the brave story of the early Quaker movement now that all serious thought is turning to the reconstruction of the Church catholic and of the Social Order. The past is pregnant with lessons for the present, not indeed by prescribing ready-made solutions for our modern problems, but by showing the spirit of dedication and adventure in which these problems must be faced. We lose its inspiration when we think of it as some far-off age untroubled by the spiritual doubts and difficulties that beset us; closer examination shows that it was crowded with its own perplexities and fateful issues, through which those could walk most worthily who fronted the dawn in glad surrender to its light. Download or read book The Later Periods of Quakerism Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Rufus Matthew Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Later Periods of Quakerism, Vol. 1 of 2 This book completes the Rowntree Series devoted to the history of the origin and development of Quakerism. The Series includes my two introductory volumes: Studies in Mystical Religion and Spiritual Reformers in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries; two volumes by William Charles Braithwaite: The Beginnings of Quakerism and The Second Period of Quakerism; The Quakers in the American Colonies in which I had the co-operation of Isaac Sharpless and Amelia M. Gummere, and this present volume, The Later Periods of Quakerism. John Wilhelm Rowntree had planned to write the History of the Society of Friends, and I had planned, at the same time, to write the History of Mysticism. His death in 1905 made it necessary to reshape all the literary plans which we had made, and in the summer of that year the Series was outlined and begun. After sixteen years the task has come to completion. The reception of the previous volumes has given us much encouragement, and we hope that the finished Series may prove to be a genuine contribution to the meaning and significance of one type of spiritual religion. We have endeavoured to tell the somewhat complicated story clearly and impartially. We have not been writing an apology or defending a favoured position. We have been presenting the historical unfolding of a religious movement as it moved and not as we wished to have it move. It has its lessons not only for Friends but, as we believe, for other Christians as well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quaker: A Study in Costume There are three distinct periods into which the his tory of Quaker dress will naturally fall - the period of persecution, when the early Friends had everything at stake, and life was to them more than meat and the body than raiment; the second, or reactionary period, when their position was established, their cause won, and prosperity, with its successes, was proving, as it always will prove, a far more dangerous foe than the perils of adversity; and the third, or modern period, when the crisis of the present brings them face to face with intricate problems, and dress again falls into its proper place in the general scheme of things. We shall see that in the face of a real issue, Quakerism disre garded the question of dress; and it is worth while to trace the growth and development of the traditional idea of Quaker costume, as it has come to be universally accepted. In other words, we shall study the Quaker in the light of a Higher Criticism, applied to the Doc trine of Clothes.
