Book The Second Norman Conquest of England Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Second Norman Conquest of England Classic Reprint written by Charles Edward Cheney and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Norman Conquest of England The following sketch had its birth in the mind of the writer through his accidental possession of a copy of L'Histoire des Ducs de Normandie et des Rois d'Angleterre - an anonymous chronicle in ancient French, which is supposed by competent authorities to have been written in the first quarter of the thirteenth century. By so distinguished an historian as Petit-Dutaillis (whose Life of Louis VIII. of France has been of invaluable aid in the preparation of this essay), L'Histoire des Ducs de Normandie et des Rois d'Angleterre is believed to be the work of an eye-witness of the scenes and events related. Careful study has been given in the preparation of this paper to the works of such chroniclers as Matthew Paris, Matthew of Westminster, Walter of Coventry, and especially Roger of Wendover. Book The Normans in Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Normans in Europe Classic Reprint written by A. H. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normans in Europe The history of the Scandinavian Exodus which began in the ninth century falls conveniently into two periods. During the first, (800 circ. - 912) the people of Denmark, Sweden and Norway harassed Europe with their inroads, and formed definite settlements in the British Isles, Russia, and France. During the second, (1029-1066) France itself became the starting-place for a new series of incursions, led by men of Scandinavian descent, who had by that time adopted French customs and language. To this period belong the settlements in Spain and Italy, and the Norman conquest of England. The aim of this book is to present a connected view of these incursions, and to bring clearly before the reader the important fact, that the Norman Conquest was only the last of this long series of settlements and conquests. The narrow limits required by the character of the series have necessitated much compression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Norman Conquest of England, Vol. 2: Its Causes and Its Results I have again to give my best thanks for help of various kinds to several of the friends whom I spoke of in my first volume. To them I must now add Mr. Duffus Hardy and Mr. Edward Edwards. But, above all, I must again express my deep thanks to Professor Stubbs, not only for the benefit derived from his writings, but for his personal readiness to correct and to suggest on all points. I regret that the bulk to which the text has swelled has caused me to leave out several notes which were designed to have a place in the Appendix; but I believe that their substance will find a place as least as fitting among the more general disquisitions which I hope to give in the fifth volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Norman Conquest of England, Vol. 5: Its Causes and Its Results But, even should I never carry out this or any other scheme, I venture to hope that, writing as I have done, far from either the advantages or the distractions of a capital or an University, writing in my own home among my own books, I have yet been able to do somewhat for the truth of history. I would even believe that what I have written may have gained something by being written in the heart of the realm of Ine and Elfred, on soil where every step calls up some memory of the great struggle which made Britain England. The Teutonic settlement in this island becomes more of a living thing to one who finds that the boundary of the land which Ceawlin won from the Briton abides, after thirteen hundred years, the boundary of his own parish and his own fields. At all events, in bringing my work to an end, I can say in all honesty that I have laboured for truth, that I have never wilfully kept back any scrap of evidence, whether telling for or against my own conclusions, that I have given every reader of mine the means of coming, if he thinks good, to con elusions di 'erent from my own. And in speaking of my topographical researches, though I do not think that in the present volume I have had any direct help from Mr. J. R. Green, yet I have often felt the benefit of earlier inquiries of the same kind made in his company. I may truly say that it was from him that I first learned to look on a town as a whole with a kind of personal history, instead of simply the place where such and such a church or castle was to be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Norman, Vol. 6: Conquest of England; Its Causes and Its Results This Index to the History of the Norman Conquest has been adapted to the first edition of all the volumes, and to the third edition of the first and second volume. As the paging of the editions differs considerably, that of the third is marked by the prefix. In all cases where this does not occur, the same paging serves for both. It was not thought necessary to give references to the second edition, as all the volumes of that edition already have indexes. The extra labour would have been great, not to speak of the confusion which would be caused by three sets of paging. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 11 of 16 James was in his twenty-first year when he commenced his second campaign as a lieutenant-general; he was the youngest officer of that rank in the French service, and the most distinguished. His great talent was as an engineer. At the siege of Mousson, where he was at work with his company in the ditch of the envelope, under the great tower, a storm blew away their blinds, and left them ex posed to the view of those on the ramparts. Yet all of us, says he, were so busily employed picking our way, the ditch being full of dirt and water, that not one single man observed that the blind was ruined, and we conse quently in open view, till we were gotten half our way, and then one of our company proposed that we should return; to which I well remember I would not consent, urging that since we were got so far onward, the danger was equal. So we continued going on, but in all the way we were thus exposed not one shot was fired at us, at which we were much surprised. After the town surrendered, the governor informed us, 'that being himself on the wall, and knowing me by my star, he forbade his men to fire upon the company.'
