Book Investigation of Staged Laser Plasma Acceleration

Download or read book Investigation of Staged Laser Plasma Acceleration written by Satomi Shiraishi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis establishes an exciting new beginning for Laser Plasma Accelerators (LPAs) to further develop toward the next generation of compact high energy accelerators. Design, installation and commissioning of a new experimental setup at LBNL played an important role and are detailed through three critical components: e-beam production, reflection of laser pulses with a plasma mirror and large wake excitation below electron injection threshold. Pulses from a 40 TW peak power laser system were split into a 25 TW pulse and a 15 TW pulse. The first pulse was used for e-beam production in the first module and the second pulse was used for wake excitation in the second module to post-accelerate the e-beam. As a result, reliable e-beam production and efficient wake excitation necessary for the staged acceleration were independently demonstrated. These experiments have laid the foundation for future staging experiments at the 40 TW peak power level.

Book Phase Space Dynamics in Plasma Based Wakefield Acceleration

Download or read book Phase Space Dynamics in Plasma Based Wakefield Acceleration written by Xinlu Xu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores several key issues in beam phase space dynamics in plasma-based wakefield accelerators. It reveals the phase space dynamics of ionization-based injection methods by identifying two key phase mixing processes. Subsequently, the book proposes a two-color laser ionization injection scheme for generating high-quality beams, and assesses it using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. To eliminate emittance growth when the beam propagates between plasma accelerators and traditional accelerator components, a method using longitudinally tailored plasma structures as phase space matching components is proposed. Based on the aspects above, a preliminary design study on X-ray free-electron lasers driven by plasma accelerators is presented. Lastly, an important type of numerical noise—the numerical Cherenkov instabilities in particle-in-cell codes—is systematically studied.

Book Physics Of High Brightness Beams 2nd Icfa Advanced Accelerator Workshop

Download or read book Physics Of High Brightness Beams 2nd Icfa Advanced Accelerator Workshop written by James B Rosenzweig and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-12-18 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 1999 ICFA workshop on the physics of high brightness beams. The workshop took a snapshot in time of a fast moving, interdisciplinary field driven by advanced applications such as high gradient, high energy physics linear colliders, high gain free electron lasers, heavy ion fusion, and transmutation of nuclear materials. While the field of high brightness beam physics has traditionally been divided into disparate electron and heavy ion communities, the workshop brought the two types of researchers together, so that a sharing of insights and methods could be achieved. Thus, this book represents a unifying step in the development of the diverse fascinating discipline of high brightness beam physics, with its challenges rooted in collective, nonlinear particle motion and ultra-high electromagnetic energy density.

Book Characteristics of a Continuous flow Induction Plasma Accelerator

Download or read book Characteristics of a Continuous flow Induction Plasma Accelerator written by J. D. Brooks and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics of continuous-flow induction plasma accelerators with a 10-kilocycle, single-phase driving coil on supersonic nozzles were studied. Pressure measurements and vane-deflection measurements were made in a 15-centimeter-diameter accelerator at various mass flow rates. Charged-particle velocities were obtained in 15-centimeter-diameter and 10-centimeter-diameter accelerators by measuring with photoelectric detectors the time required for a change in flow luminosity to travel a known distance. Pressure-probe measurements indicated that the entire flow, including the boundary layer and the separated-flow region, was accelerated in the 15-centimeter-diameter accelerator. The largest increase in pilot pressure was 250 percent of the cold-flow value with 20 kilowatts of 10-kilocycle driving power. The charged-particle velocities increased as the mass flow rate was reduced and as the power was increased. The maximum charged-particle velocity obtained was 40,000 meters per second in the 10-centimeter-diameter accelerator. Average velocity and thrust obtained from vane-deflection measurements were in good agreement with those obtained from pressure-probe measurements.
