Book The Second Christmas Megapack

Download or read book The Second Christmas Megapack written by Booth Tarkington and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christmas--the very word conjures up memories of the most wondrous childhood holiday of all--filled with the glitter of colorfully-wrapped presents, family visits, carols, photographs, decorating the tree, attendance at church to celebrate the birth of the Christ child, and tummy-stuffing dinners tucked with treats seen at no other time of the year. But the yule holiday has been celebrated for at least two centuries in North America, and our writers have been producing memorable stories about this unique day for almost as long. Here are 29 Christmas stories old and new, tales to delight, to entrance, to beguile, and even to sadden a whole new generation of readers. From C. C. MacApp's view of a Christmas future to Jacob A. Riis's gut-wrenching portraits of the holiday in the 1890s slums of New York to William J. Locke's reenactment of the tale of the Three Wise Men, we experience every possible facet of this most precious day of the year. Book The 50th Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK Russ Winterbotham

Download or read book The 50th Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK Russ Winterbotham written by Russ Winterbotham and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Robert Winterbotham (1904-1971)—who wrote as both R.R. Winterbotham and Russ Winterbotham (as well as the pseudonyms “J. Harvey Bond” for mysteries and “Franklin Hadley”)—began publishing in the late 1920s, though his didn’t make his science fiction debut until 1935, when “The Star that Would not Behave” appeared in Astounding. He published prolifically in most of the top magazines of the day, before settling into an action-adventure niche. From the fiction magazines, he moved into comics (writing for Red Ryder), comic strips (he penned “Chris Welkin, Planeteer” from its start in 1951 into the 1960s), and Big Little books for the Whitman Publishing Company (he wrote at least 60, including the Maximo the Amazing Superman series). All the while, he maintained his full-time job as fiction editor for Scripps-Howard NEA news service. In those days, newspapers published fiction, and many had a weekly insert that included full-length novels. Although well regarded, his novels—which appeared under pseudonyms—failed to attract much fan attention, and he is largely forgotten today. Nevertheless, modern readers will enjoy his better-than-average writing and fun, action-adventure plots—often with clever twists. Included in this volume are: ORIDIN’S FORMULA THE MINUS WOMAN DEAD MAN’S PLANET THE THOUGHT-MEN OF MERCURY THE MONSTER THAT THREATENED THE UNIVERSE LONESOME HEARTS A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE THE WHISPERING SPHERES GENESIS! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have been enjoying the work of Welsh fantasist Rhys Hughes for quite a few years now, and it’s an honor to be publishing not one, but three MEGAPACK® collections of his indescribably excellent, of which this is the first. There is fantasy, of course. But there is also absurdist comedy. And horrors. And monsters. And all manner of things that only he could come up with. Truly, there is no one writing at the moment who is anything like him. Looking backwards, he’s a bit like R.A. Lafferty (but not), and a bit like Neal Gaiman (but not), and a bit like Paul Di Filippo (but not). Or perhaps they are a bit like him? (Or not?) After all, it’s a bit field with lots of overlap. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelson Slade Bond (1908-2006) had a remarkable career as a science fiction writer. He wrote extensively for books, radio, television and the stage, and especially the pulp magazines. Like Ray Bradbury, he did his journeyman work in the science fiction pulps before graduating to the higher-paying “slick” magazines like Bluebook. The quality of his work was such that Arkham House, Gnome Press, Prime Press, and Doubleday issued collections of his early short stories. At Wildside Press, we were fortunate enough to work with him in his twilight years, and we reprinted his "Lancelog Biggs, Spaceman" collection, as well as a solo work, "That Worlds May Live," and made him the Featured Author of an early issue of Adventure Tales magazine.
