This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turn of the Tide, American Operations at Cantigny, Cha teau Thierry, and the Second Battle of the Marne Furthermore, I had the great honor and good fortune to be attached to the French and British Armies in the Vosges and Flanders, respectively, before engaging in campaign with my own command, and later of serving with my own command while attached to the British Army in Picardy. The experience of the War thus gained, coupled with that of an active participation in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne campaigns, enabled me, I believe, to acquire a broader viewpoint than I might have had with more restricted opportunities. In justice to our gallant and indomitable Allies who bore the brunt of the War and denied the Central Allies the ultimate victory while we were preparing to assist in attaining it, I have been careful to avoid the all too common error of overrating our physical contribution to the result. However great the moral effect of our participation in the fighting on the Marne may have been, and it is hard to overestimate that effect, the time has come when in justice to ourselves as well as to our Allies we should view the events of the War sanely, and endeavor to see them in their true perspective. Surely the truth is glorious enough, and there is no cause for our pride to suffer at its telling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cannon Fodder Or Corps d Elite The American Expeditionary Force In The Great War Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Cannon Fodder Or Corps d Elite The American Expeditionary Force In The Great War Illustrated Edition written by Cdr. Jeffrey J. Bernasconi and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes The Americans in the First World War Illustration Pack - 57 photos/illustrations and 10 maps The analysis of the impact of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in the Great War has fallen into two competing camps. The first believes that the AEF was the war winning factor in coalition warfare. The opposite view holds that the AEF itself had no true impact, but rather it was the industrial might and the manpower potential of the United States (US) that was the key element to victory. The caveat to both views was that the AEF did not have enough time in combat to truly show its martial ability. This thesis attempts to analyze the combat effectiveness of the AEF by comparing its experience with that of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in 1916. The rate of change in the ability of the AEF to adapt to modern warfare will be shown to be slightly higher than that of the BEF of 1916. By November 1918, the AEF was not completely tactically combat effective, but it had dramatically improved from where it started and clearly demonstrated the potential to continue to improve at the same pace.

Book Machine Gunner s Notes France 1918 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Machine Gunner s Notes France 1918 Illustrated Edition written by Lieutenant Colonel Charles M. Dupuy and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes The Americans in the First World War Illustration Pack - 57 photos/illustrations and 10 maps When the United States entered the First World War in 1917 the size of the army was tiny in comparison to the European Powers. The long-serving officers of the U.S. army faced the daunting task of licking the new recruits of 1917 into shape for service overseas. Among these officers was Charles Dupuy who was charged with getting his men ready for battle utilising the weapon that had inflicted so much damage during the previous three years - the machine gun. Key to offence or defence, the machine gun companies of the U.S. expeditionary force had to be fast and deadly in the offence and staunch and steadfast in defence. Major Dupuy tells of how he whipped his men into shape and led them to hard fought victory against the Germans on the Western front in 1918.

Book A Soldier s Manuscript Illustrated Edition

Download or read book A Soldier s Manuscript Illustrated Edition written by Cornelius Winant and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes The Americans in the First World War Illustration Pack - 57 photos/illustrations and 10 maps “THE narrative of adventure, travel, combat, and escape, which composes this volume, is the straight-forward work of a straight-thinking young American. Cornelius Winant gives a clear assessment of the great movements in which he had so chivalrously borne a part. Perhaps he had no thought of the manuscript ever going beyond his family, which now, in response to the natural wishes of many friends, privately distributes the account in printed form. “Four boys with their mother and father composed the Winant family. The house on 71st Street must have re-echoed to the gay laughter and happy comradeship of these four devoted brothers. “That was in 1900, when our soldier-narrator was but a little child; it was long ago, before the boy had left the endeared home for boarding school, before they had graduated from Princeton, before the catastrophe, in which each bore a distinguished part, shook the world. “The reader will quickly become involved in a narrative which takes him, with Cornelius Winant, after his prompt will-to-enlist, through the early ambulance days, through a winter at Monastir, to the western front in the French Army, and twice into the harrowing experiences of German prison camps. “The quality of the account is an utter fairness, as utter an uncomplaining courage, marked throughout by a boyish, naïve, selfless delight in the game. Of his terrible journey to the Dutch frontier he writes: “I remember thinking, as I was going along this road, that in spite of the hardships it was darn good fun, and I appreciated it at the time.”-Foreword
