Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seasons, and Miscellaneous Poems The Author cannot be supposed to have penned his "Seasons" on the summit of Olympus, where wind, rain, and clouds, are said to be unknown. He has, to the best of his ability, described the leading features of the "Seasons," and trusts that his lucubrations will meet with some kindly attention. He does not presume to have emulated the graphic delineations and classic style of a Thomson; but entertains a hope, that his sentiments will prove generally correct, and be acceptable to his readers. To interest the young, and lead such to habits of reading and thinking; and to cultivate a love of Nature, with the hope that they may be "led from Nature up to Nature's God," is the chief desire of the Author; and if this little volume should in any degree accomplish this end, he will be amply rewarded. Preface To The Second Edition. The first edition of this Volume appeared in 1873, and was soon out of print. Since then, another edition has been so repeatedly asked for, that the Author again commits it to the press, with the addition of more than twenty new poems. In writing both we have kept in mind that the book is designed for different grades of students, and that many who are likely to use it will have but little time or Opportunity to consult good works of reference. For reasons which need not be mentioned, the work has been done more hurriedly than we should have liked, and hence some omissions or mistakes may have been overlooked. Partly for the same reasons the notes on Winter were written first, which will account for some of the references in the notes to Autumn. Lastly, while I am set down on the title-page as joint editor with Mr. Moore, and while I accept my full share of the responsibility for the work, it is only fair to say that he deserves the credit of it.
