Book excerpt: This volume originated in a belief, shared by the two editors, that the time was ripe for a world-wide survey - or at least sampling - of seasonality in freshwater phytoplankton. An opportunity was provided by the International Limnological Congress (S. I. L. ), held at Lyon in August 1983, to plan a one-day symposium on the topic. From this enjoyable and successful occasion, augmented by additional written contributions, the present volume has emerged. As convenors and editors, we are grateful to the contributors for their cooperation in this international venture. The seasonality of phytoplankton is widely conditioned by that of climate. Thus one may expect to find the geographical differentiation of climatic patterns reflected in the seasonal patterns of algal occurrence. Diversity in the global perspective is also introduced by considerations of geomorphology, geochemistry, and genotypically determined response. Nevertheless, the historical base of our subject is firmly rooted in the north-temperate zone. From its fresh waters, and seas, there have evolved virtually all of the approaches and techniques now being applied to the analysis of phytoplankton seasonal dynamics.

Holistic understanding of the factors determining marine productivity requires detailed knowl edge of algal physiology and of hydrodynamics. Traditionally studies of aquatic primary productivity have heen conducted hy workers in two major schools: experimental laboratory biology, and empirical field ecology. Here an attempt was made .to hring together people from both schools to share information and con cepts; each author was charged with reviewing his field of exoer tise. The scope of the Symposium is broad, which we feel is its strength. Book excerpt: The nutrient dynamics and biological structure of shallow non-stratified lakes differ markedly from that of deep and stratified lakes: for example, the return of nutrients lost through sedimentation is faster and the potential importance of fish and submerged macrophytes as food-web regulators is greater. In addition shallow lakes are more easily influenced by fluctuations in the physical environment caused by wind disturbance, temperature change, etc. Although shallow lakes are often the most common lake type in lowland countries, less attention has been paid to them than to deep stratified lakes and few comparisons have been made between shallow freshwater and brackish lakes. The volume is divided into five main themes, each introduced by an invited speaker: Nutrient dynamics with special emphasis on sediment water interactions and changes in loading (Professor Lambertus Lyklema); Biological structure and trophic interaction (Professor Stephen T. The bibliography is divided into volumes according to the publication dates of the source documents. Volume 1 contains 569 abstracts cov ering publication dates up to and including 1969; Volume 2 contains 730 abstracts covering the years 1970 to 1972. The material included in this bibliography represents computer selections based on the presence of a form of the word "alga" somewhere in the referenced citation. Substantively, the material typifies WRSIC's "centers of com petence" approach to information support of the Office of Water Re sources Research (OWRR) of the Department of the Interior. Most of the references in this bibliography are the work of the center of competence on eutrophication at the University of Wisconsin. The indexes refer to the WRSIC accession number, which follows each abstract. The Significant Descriptor Index is made up of a fraction of the total descriptors and identifiers by which each paper has been indexed. It represents weighted terms that best describe the informa tion content; this status is indicated by the asterisks which precede them. The General Index includes all the remaining descriptors and identifiers by which each paper in this bibliography has been indexed.

Book excerpt: It is not so very long ago that botanical concensus abandoned the distinction that was drawn between Algae and Flagellata, the latter having been regarded by zoologists as a group of the Protozoa. Even today some colourless flagellates may find themselves occupying different locations in contrasting taxonomic schemes. However, modern developments in ecology have placed greater emphasis on functional attributes of organisms, and hydro biologists have certainly been in the forefront of such changes. Thus we find that flagellates are again the subject of controversy, not so much over their taxonomic position as over their functional position - their role in aquatic ecosystems. At the 22nd Congress of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology in Lyon, France in August 1983, we conceived the idea of a meeting to discuss 'Flagellates in Freshwater Ecosystems'. This idea was approved by the committee of SIL and we arranged for the meeting to take place during June 1986 at Lammi Biological Station (University of Helsinki) in Finland. Participants from nine countries enjoyed outstanding hospitality from the staff at the Station during a week of lectures, excursions and discussion ses sions. Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of the Symposium on Perspectives in Southern Hemisphere Limnology which was held from 3-13 July 1984 in Wilderness, South Africa. It can be asked why this Symposium was necessary at a time when conferences, symposia and other gatherings of learned people abound. Limnologists in the Southern Hemisphere have for some time been pointing out that limnological theory and inland water management practices have been developed almost exclusively in Northern Hemisphere temperate latitudes. Most of the land masses of the Southern Hemisphere fall within lower latitudes, 0 from 20-40 S, where the climate tends to be dry, with low cloud cover and with high levels of incident radiation and high water temperatures. Wide extremes are experienced in both rainfall and runoff, which occur mainly in summer. Sedimentary geological structures give rise to dispersive soils and highly turbid waters. Physiological, behavioural or developmental adaptations in the floral and faunal components are necessary to cope with desiccation and low visibility.
