Book The Seasonal Phytoplankton Assemblages Associated with the Chesapeake Bay Plume and Waters Off Dam Neck Virginia

Download or read book The Seasonal Phytoplankton Assemblages Associated with the Chesapeake Bay Plume and Waters Off Dam Neck Virginia written by Harold G. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coastal waters south of the Chesapeake Bay entrance contain a diverse assemblage of phytoplankters, dominated by net and nanoplankton components. Two major growth periods occur in later winter-spring and fall, and coincide with rising and decreasing water temperatures and changes in available light, rainfall, salinities, among other factors. The purpose of this study was to provide a seasonal profile of the phytoplankton composition from this coastal region where there is a diverse representation of estuarine and shelf populations.

Book Seasonal Phytoplankton Composition and Concentrations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay and Vicinity

Download or read book Seasonal Phytoplankton Composition and Concentrations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay and Vicinity written by Harold G. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to characterize the phytoplankton and their seasonal patterns of development in the lower Chesapeake Bay, in an adjacent river estuary, and at a station in shelf waters near the Bay entrance. The river estuary is Hampton Roads, through which the James, Elizabeth, Lafayette, and Nansemond Rivers join to enter the lower Chesapeake Bay. Many of the earlier studies stressed the net phytoplankton, where diatoms and dinoflagellates characterized seasonal peaks, which commonly occurred during spring and fall, and to a lesser degree in summer. However, the significance of the nanoplankton component to productivity and total cell concentrations was later emphasized. Further comments on the phytoplankton composition of Chesapeake Bay plume were given by Marshall (1982), who noted seasonal differences were distinct enough to characterize the plume in its early movement on the continental shelf. The phytoplankton composition of the lower Chesapeake Bay consisted of a diverse assemblage of 243 species. The major seasonal growth periods were dominated by a diatomaceous flora and a picoplankton complex composed mainly of cyanophytes and chlorophytes.

Book Chesapeake Bay Plume Study Superflux Relative to the Biology of the Contiguous Shelf Fishery Research and Monitoring

Download or read book Chesapeake Bay Plume Study Superflux Relative to the Biology of the Contiguous Shelf Fishery Research and Monitoring written by J. P. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was initiated in 1980 to study the influence of the Chesapeake Bay plume on the contiguous shelf using both in situ and remote sensing techniques. The combined use of in situ and remotely sensed data has enabled us to define the area of the continental shelf that is influenced by the Chesapeake Bay plume. Water emanating from the Bay contained biostimulants, contaminants and other materials as well as increased biomass and biological activity, and a different assemblage of phytoplankton. Remote sensing added to our ability to understand the complex and dynamic plume and adjacent shelf area by (1) providing synoptic and detailed information for the surface field in which in situ measurements were made, and (2) directing surface ships to key areas to maximize their sampling ability. Surface ships provided information concerning (1) the vertical structure of the water column, and (2) variables not directly relatable to those measured by remote sensors. (Author).

Book Seasonal Relationships Between Phytoplankton and Mero Zooplankton Populations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay Virginia

Download or read book Seasonal Relationships Between Phytoplankton and Mero Zooplankton Populations in the Lower Chesapeake Bay Virginia written by Harold G. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial purpose of this study was to identify seasonal pattern of abundance for phytoplankton and mero-zooplankton larvae in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The next objective was to relate the temporal appearances of these two groups to each other and identify any apparent relationships. More detailed reports of the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations from this area have been prepared by the authors under separate titles to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Empgasis in this report stresses the broad distribution patterns of these species and their trophic relationship to each other in time. Past mero-zooplankton studies in the lower Chesapeake Bay have been minimal and generally stress individual species, their life cycles, distribution, or general ecology.
