Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Season's Work on Arsenical Poisoning of Fruit Trees Summary of Orchard Investigations: It will be seen from the above descriptions that in the regions like the Pajaro Valley, the Rogue River and Hood River Valleys, where little or no irrigation water is used, and where if anything the orchards suffer from lack of water, and the soils are comparatively free from alkali, the troubles under consideration are entirely unknown. That in every district in which the alkali is present in sufficient amounts to appear on the surface and where water is sufficiently abundant to cause seepage in the lower districts, that more or less of these root rot or collar rot conditions occur. In bad cases of seep age whole orchards are stricken within a year or two, oftentimes after they have borne a number of heavy crops. This may be due to a gradual rise of the ground water, or to the gradual extension down ward of the roots of the trees. In milder cases, only here and there a tree is affected and these often linger along for a number of years, sometimes in a dry year, partially recovering, only to be stricken again in a wet one. If there is any perceptible slope to the ground the trouble will usually be more marked on the lower end of the irrigation furrows. Where alkali is evidently the cause of the death of the trees, no variety seems to be exempt, all being equally afiected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Residual Arsenic on Pennsylvania Apples in 1932: A Thesis There has been a rather wide-spread interest in the composition and removal of insecticidal residues remaining upon apples at harvest, as a result of suppression operations against the codling moth. To arrange a spraying system it has been necessary to determine the quan tities of residual arsenic upon the apple at picking time. This study was intended to determine these factors and to indicate what took place during the season of 1952. The use of chemicals as spray treatments in codling moth control has a number of limiting factors. Their efficiency depends upon the employment of effective dosages of poison, proper timing of applica tions to the trees, and thoroughness of spraying. The amount of rain fall during the growing period of the fruits also has an important bearing on the protection of apples by the spray coating applied. Book excerpt: A working group of 23 experts from 13 countries met in Lyon to evaluate the evidence for carcinogenicity of arsenic (mostly naturally occurring) as a contaminant of drinking-water, and of the water-disinfectant chloramine. The working group also evaluated or re-evaluated four chlorination by-products found in drinking-water, namely chloral hydrate, di- and trichloroacetic acids, and 3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (also known as MX). High-level exposure to arsenic in drinking-water occurs in some regions such as China, Latin America, Bangladesh and West Bengal. The Working Group reviewed epidemiological studies of human cancer (mainly ecological studies in Taiwan and Chile, and several case-control and cohort studies) in relation to arsenic in drinking-water. Arsenic in drinking-water (primarily inorganic, as arsenate and to a lesser extent arsenite) was evaluated as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) on the basis of sufficient evidence for an increased risk for cancer of the urinary bladder, lung and skin. Studies on inorganic arsenic in experimental animals provided limited evidence for its carcinogenicity, but sufficient evidence was found in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of dimethylarsinic acid (an organic form of arsenic), which produced urinary bladder tumours in rats and lung tumours in mice after oral administration.

But in China’s formative era of pharmacy (200–800 CE), poisons were strategically employed as healing agents to cure everything from abdominal pain to epidemic disease. Healing with Poisons explores the ways physicians, religious figures, court officials, and laypersons used toxic substances to both relieve acute illnesses and enhance life. It illustrates how the Chinese concept of du—a word carrying a core meaning of “potency”—led practitioners to devise a variety of methods to transform dangerous poisons into effective medicines. Recounting scandals and controversies involving poisons from the Era of Division to the Tang, historian Yan Liu considers how the concept of du was central to how the people of medieval China perceived both their bodies and the body politic. He also examines the wide range of toxic minerals, plants, and animal products used in classical Chinese pharmacy, including everything from the herb aconite to the popular recreational drug Five-Stone Powder. By recovering alternative modes of understanding wellness and the body’s interaction with foreign substances, this study cautions against arbitrary classifications and exemplifies the importance of paying attention to the technical, political, and cultural conditions in which substances become truly meaningful.
