Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SEASIDE SUMMER CAMPS by Gianluca Mancini(English Translation by Vicki F. Weinstein,Ph. D.)In the summer of 1997, in Ravenna, Italy, strange, obscure accidents, presages of death and old guilt feelings torment Manuele, but also Davide and Umberto. What links the three main personages, all 35 years old, an architect, an engineer and a wholesale toy salesman, is the Seaside Summer Camps on the Romagnola Adriatic Riviera: immense, imposing buildings erected in the 1930s in an apparently mad futuristic style to celebrate the social strength and dynamic power of the Fascist Regime and to combat childhood diseases with heliotherapy and thalassotherapy. The plot develops on two convergent planes: one in the present and the other in the 1960s, which is inexorably rejoined to the present. A third time plane buried still deeper in the past, in the Ventennio, the twenty year Fascist period from 1923 to 1943, emerges by surprise...There is an Evil advancing behind the scenes, coming from a tenebrous past...

Book Disability and Tourism in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Italy

Download or read book Disability and Tourism in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Italy written by Luciano Maffi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention to the issue of disabilities has intensified in recent decades, prompting States and organizations to respond with appropriate measures to promote inclusion of persons with disabilities in all social environments. This book’s thesis is that the seeds of this inclusivity were planted by the development of tourism for people with disabilities in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book explores the development of tourism for people with disabilities in Italy during this time period. It adds an important tessera to the mosaic of international literature that has rarely considered the history of tourism and the history of disabilities in a unified manner. While certainly of great interest to an Italian audience, the discussion of the various responses taking form in Italy to the needs of persons with disabilities, and the role these responses have played in the development of mass tourism generally, is also quite pertinent to international contexts. This book is based largely on unpublished sources. The authors’ hope is that the presentation of these new materials combined with the innovative approach of a historical study of tourism through the lens of disabilities will open up international scholarly debate and discussion drawing in contributions from all disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sailing trip along the proposed Northern Gateway marine route with a fresh new voice in non-fiction. With oil and gas behemoth Enbridge Inc.’s Northern Gateway proposal nearing approval, supertankers loaded with two million barrels of oil may soon be plying the waters from northern British Columbia down the wild Pacific Coast. This region is home to the largest tract of temperate rainforest on earth, First Nations who have lived there for millennia, and some of the world’s most biodiverse waters—one spill is all it will take to erase ten thousand years of evolution. Arno Kopecky and his companions travel aboard a forty-one-foot sailboat exploring the pristine route—a profoundly volatile marine environment that registered 1,275 marine vessel incidents—mechanical failures, collisions, explosions, groundings, and sinkings—between 1999 and 2009 alone. Neither Kopecky nor the boat’s owner have ever sailed before, yet they brave these waters alone when their captain leaves them part way through the journey. Written with Kopecky’s quick humor and deft touch, this is a rich evocation of a mythic place and the ecology, culture, and history of a legendary region with a knife at its throat.
